Hello Everyone,
Carolyn I am not aware of any current DNA testing for the surname Coble. I
think that it would be wonderful if there were enough interested people to
participate in the testing. There is also a KOBEL mail list that I will pass your
information along to. Many people on the COBLE list also belong to the KOBEL
list because for some of us Kobel is the original spelling. (And many
variations in between.) Carolyn, you might consider joining the Kobel list and send
the DNA information to those members too.

I understand that the DNA test consists of swabbing the inside of your cheek
and that only males take the test.
I know of one other group that used DNA to determine their ancestors
successfully. There were 3 Sprinkle brothers who immigrated to PA. in the 1700's.
The testing proved conclusively which of the 3 brothers each of the Sprinkle
group descended from. Very exciting.
List members, please give this some thought and give us some feed back.
Thank you Carolyn for your interest.

George,
I will get back to you if it looks as though we can get enough together to
start a group. You can get information at this address:

I am certainly interested in DNA testing but have only traced my Cobel(Coble)
ancestry back to Samuel Cobel(Coble) b. 1824 Darke Co. Ohio.
Our name spelling was apparantly changed by Samuel when he was living in
LeClaire, Iowa as that is the spelling in the 1870 census and later after he moved
(homsteaded?) in Saline Co. Nebraska.

It appears that there is no ongoing Coble DNA project. I do have someone
from the Henry Coble and Winney Laxton line who is willing to take a DNA test.
Is there someone from the Adam Coble and Polly Chessor line who would be
interested? It costs somewhere between $75 and $200 depending on how many markers
are tested, as far as I know. If someone is interested, we could contact the
DNA lab and find out how many participants we need and exactly what the cost is.
The DNA test can prove whether two people have a common ancestor. If enough
markers are tested, it can tell you exactly how many generations back the
common ancestor is. In families where there is documentation for the genealogy,
like the Coble family, it makes it possible to link individuals to proved
lines, without question.

Those of you doing research on the NC COBLEs. I found George COBLE, b Mar 1830 NC NC NC, M 32yrs to Mary. Mary was born June 1848 VA VA VA (M 32 years). She had had 1 child, Loretta b July 1876 KS, 23 years old in 1900.
Shown in the 1900 census in Fairplay Twp., Marion Co., KS living with these three is E.S. COBLE, brother of George born Nov 1837 NC (Single).
