Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

You betcha Jannine ... Allen Coble makes sense but I can't place the
other folks. I think you told me once but old age has apparently caught
up with me and I don't remember where I put the info.
Now can you tell me (once again) where these Coble's fit into the "great
mystery of life" ?
David
PS: I really do appreciate the census extract. Thanks

Can someone tell me where these Cobles "fit"? They were found in the
1850 Tishomingo County, Mississippi Census:
Amry Coble
Erul Coble (living with another family)
Francis Coble
William Coble
They all lived in the 4th District.

Folklore classes in the 1970's were fun additions to the social studies curriculum. One of my projects would be to have the students make lye soap. (The science teacher was usually involved in this project). This should give adequate instructions for making the lye and then the soap. Good luck.
"Aunt Mary's Homemade Lye", p. 45, Antique Cookbook by Bertha Barnes, published by Modern Litho-Print co., Jefferson City, Mo. 65101 9th printing, 1980 Copyrighted April 1974 #529372
"Aunt Mary's Homemade Lye":
Select a barrel with a small hole in the bottom and place a stone crock under the hole to catch the lye. Place straw in the bottom of the barrel. Use five bushels and one-half bushel of unslacked lime, pour into barrel one layer of ashes and on top of that sprinkle lime and add water. Ashes should be kept dry and should be strong ashes. (Hickory ashes are best.) Continue alternating the ashes and lime and adding water until all the ashes and lime are used up. The lye is ready when it is strong enough to hold up an egg with only the top visible above the water. The top area should be about the size of a dime above the lye. If the lye is not strong enough, pour it back through the ashes and add more water if necessary. The stone crock would have been a pottery jug from the Seagrove area of Randolph County for our N.C. Coble people.
Aunt Hariet's Lye Soap page 46, same book.
"This recipe was used many years ago when the first settlers moved West.
Take 11 pounds of melted fat, two cans of lye and five pints of hot water. Dissolve lye in hot water and let cool. Pour into melted fat slowly stirring constantly until cool. Pour into container that has been dipped into cold water. When set, cut into bars."
Let's face it, they didn't go to the store to buy the melted fat.
Page 46, same book, under Lard and "Cracklin's", gives these instructions for obtaining the lard. As I recall, my Grandmother actually fried it out on top of the wood stove at hog killing time.
"Fat is cut from the hams, shoulders, middlin', entrails, etc. Leave out all night in pot so it will become solidified and be easier to cut up.
The next morning cut the fat into pieces the size of a small hen's egg and put in a pot with just a small amount of water to keep it from sticking to the bottom and sides while cooking. The pot is placed over a fire, and allowed to cook slowly. Stir it often. By nightfall, the grease will have boiled out, the water evaporated, and the hard residue called "cracklin's" will have fallen to the bottom.
The grease (lard) is poured into buckets or any other container, allowed to harden and is used all winter for cooking. The cracklin's are saved for bread. " This was probably cooked in the same big castiron black kettle they used for washing the clothes.
During the Depression years of the 1930's and war years of the 1940's many farm women in southeast Guilford County, N.C.
(where the Coble's settled when they came down from Pa. in the mid-1700's) were still doing what had to be done at Hog Kill'in time on cold winter days. And, some were actually washing their clothing with homemade soap, in a large black cast iron pot, over a wood fire outside. It was not that they did not have the money to buy soap or hire a washwoman. Many considered it a part of their wifely duty and would swear that the clothes and linens were not clean if they had not been boiled with lye soap in a black pot. It was a matter of pride. No doubt the lye soap was effective in removing tobacco tar in the summer months.
Thank goodness my Mother was a city girl and sent the linens to the laundry and clothes to the wash lady. I hope this answers the questions of lye soap. I appreciate the many on this list who have helped in my efforts to find my Coble people. While I know too little about genealogy, I can usually find an answer to a history question.
I doubt that the above process differed much from that used by the first German settlers in our country and probably they used the same process for generations before they crossed the Atlantic. A Confederate Receipt Book from the University of Georgia Press in 1960 gives basically the same instructions for both tasks. If you haven't enjoyed the Foxfire Books, check them out of your local library.

During WW 2 my Grandmother, Mary A. Cobel of DeWitt, NE, made her own laundry
soap from bacon grease and lye but I do not know the ratios. She was born in
a Soddy and told me that they used grease and wood ashes when she was a child.

Remember "where ever you go there you are"
Hi! I have dug up some more Coble's that I don't know how they connect.
Sarah C. Coble b 3-30-1848 NC d. 2-27-1885 Obion County, TN. she married William P. Albright he was b. 1848 NC
I believe Sarah had siblings of:
Levin M. b 1859 NC
Maggie b 1862 NC
Geroge M. b 1864 NC
Anyone have these people in their database.
Thanks again
