I wondered if this (the naturalization process) might be a
new law passed by Parliament following the French and Indian War (1763) or
possibly by the N.C. Colonial Assembly. Since my Anthony Coble was not yet
16 when he arrived in Pa., in 1732, would he just have been too young to
take the oath at that time? His father did take the oath of allegiance to
the King of England as required when he arrived in Philadelphia. Was that adequate for naturalization in 1732? Or, might he (the father) have to also go through a naturalization process at a later date?
Did the Salisbury trip involve more specifics than just swearing loyality to the king? Since our people did go through the process in Salisbury, one wonders why they would make the long and difficult trip unless they were required. Were there people going to Salisbury or to Hillsborough prior to 1763 for the Naturalization process? It would be interesting to know if the naturalization was required or if it happened to be their choice to become British citizens. I understand that after the French and Indian War the British Parliament involvement with the colonies increased and greatly aggrivated the colonist. I can also understand why England would want to require naturalization of their subjects of other nationality. Hopefully someone will have the answers to this puzzle. P. Nesbit
