Doug:
The copy I have is a reproduction in two, soft-cover volumes
that we bought from the Higginson Book Company in Salem, Mass. (See
http://www.higginsonbooks.com ). I believe we paid $50-$60 for it a few
years ago.
The full title is "A Genealogy of the Cubberley Family" and it
was written by Bertha Cubberley Righter and Sheldon Cubberley in 1968.
Now that I have, belatedly, taken a closer and more thorough
look at the book, I can tell you that it includes the following:
- Introductory material about possible origins of the name
Cubberley
- Information about James Stelle Cubberly and his wife Mary,
their children, and both of James and Mary's wills
- Five "books" tracing the descendants of James' and Mary's five
sons (Thomas, William, James Jr., Isaac, and John). The table of
contents refers to a Book VI on daughters Sarah and Mary, but I don't
see it in my copy. There is relatively little information about James
Jr., but there is another book about his line (See below.).
- The book on son John begins at the end of Part I and then
takes up all of Part II.
- Each son's section includes a separate and non-cumulative
index to the Cubberley surnamed descendants only of that son.
- Part II ends also with an index to the non-Cubberley surnamed
descendants in the entire book by John B. Arthaud and Victoria C.
Arthaud. Mr. Arthaud is also the author of a separate genealogy of the
descendants of James Stelle Cubberley, Jr. (the third son of James Sr.)
I hope this helps! Let me know if I can tell you anything more.
Where does your Hannah fit in all this? I know that the Righter book is
owned by the New Jersey State Archives and probably by other large
genealogy collections. I believe that some years ago the Detroit Public
Library had a copy.

The Arthaud book in Chapter 1--page 4 Has a listing as follows;
Children by unknown wives...
1. John abt 1754
2, Thomas 1755
3. Mary 1761
4. Hannah 1763
5. Issac 1773
6. Levi 1773
7. William 1775
8. James b 5 Mar 1779
9. Sarah
10. George born 20 Feb 1788
11. Martin born ca 1790
12. Joseph, born ca 1793
If anyone wants I could fax you a copy of this page. I do not have the
book but I do have some copies of various pages. You could request your local
library to borrow the book from another library. I did this a few months ago.
I do have the Righter/Cubberley book. The 2 books seem to disagree in other
areas as well. Who knows?
It can be confusing trying to sort out. Someone seems to have confusion
concerning Mary Pearson. She married James Stells father James Cubberley in 1716
in New Jersey. Their children were Thomas 1717, william 1720.James Stell
1723,Issac 1725, John 1727. Mary 1728, Sarah 1730.
Perhaps adding to more confusion--some have raised the point "Stell"" was
not James' birth middle name--that he added that years later to his name!!
I hope some of this helps, sometimes I get cornfused myself .

Hello,
A relative of mine shared some family tree info with me. I am related to
her through John Franklin Coberly. Frank & Mattie Leona Fore's daughter-
Luella is her grandmother & Lorraine (Anna)- another daughter of Frank's was my
grandmother.
She told me that Luella kept track of several names & dates. The info that
she gave me was:
John Franklin (Frank) Coberly married Mattie Leona Fore -> & had 11 children
- Frank's parents were George Washington Coberly & Elizabeth McClearly
- Geo Washington's parents were George William Coberly & Matilda Lewis
-Geo William's parents were James Stell Coberly & Mary Pfaffenberg
Mary's parents were Johann G Pfaffenberg & Anna Matha
This is the info that she has told me. I plan on asking the local library
if they can get a Coberly/Cubberly Geanology book on loan as soon as possible.
There is just so much different info on the internet about this family
line.

My feeling was always that they must have changed their name after they
arrived in England. I guess to escape persecution. They changed it in New
Jersey from Cubberly. I have found no proof but I do not do that much
genealogy any more.

Corliss, I do believe the Cubberlys did originate in France prior to coming

Thanks for checking. She did get back to me with correct names and I was

son George.
By the way, do you have any insights on the seemingly controversy as to

Stephen: The book you mention by Dr. John Arthaud is the one that
traces the descendants of James Stelle's son Dr. James Stelle Cubberly
Jr. - the doctor who moved from New Jersey to Virginia. There is
relatively little information about James Jr. in the Bertha Righter and
Sheldon Cubberly book I mentioned. However, I do own a copy of the
Righter book and would be glad to check names if anyone is interested.
Unfortunately, none of the names mentioned by Jenny or you appear in the
index. Perhaps the line using the spelling "Coberly" descended from a
different original ancestor?
Gary: I have read that the Cubberly/Coberly family originated
either in France or in England (Gloucestershire). Do you have an opinion
or research on that?
Thanks, Corliss Cubberly Davis

Dear cousins: Although I have nothing to offer to help Jenny with her
search, I was very glad to see some action on this list! I am also
interested in Gary Coberly's tracing his ancestors back to 1690. I and
nine of my living relatives are all descended from Isaac W. Cubberley
(James Stelle, William, William W., Isaac W.) of New Jersey. Isaac had
one daughter who died as a teenager and four sons. In Bertha Righter
and Sheldon Cubberley's book "A genealogy of the Cubberley Family,"
they do not know the identity of the youngest son. He is my
great-grandfather Isaac M. Cubberley. If anyone - for example
descendants of his brothers James, Stephen, and William - is interested
in details about our little branch of the Cubberly (our spelling) tree,
let me know!

I am a descendant of James Stell Coberly through his son, George William.
George William Coberley was married to Mary Ann Matthews (and two other
wives). They had ten children. One of those children was Joseph Vanhorn
Coberley (1849-1929). He was married to Mary Elizabeth Hoyt (1858-1930).
Joseph and Mary had thirteen children and settled in Missouri (and many of
the descendants are still in Missouri); one of them was my great-great
grandmother, Mary Ann Coberley (1888-1958). Mary Ann was married to James
Lawrence Potter (1882-1960). Their oldest of eight children was my
great-grandfather (1906-1995). Because I went to Coberley reunions (in
Trenton, Missouri) with my great-grandfather as a child and listened to
family stories, I now take in as much family history information as
possible. I am happy to share what I have. Much of the foundation of my
work came from Dr. Arthauds Coberley book from the 1980s. I have since
filled in many of the gaps and have more information on the families listed
above and beyond. I dont have any of this published, but do enjoy sharing
it with interested people.

According to the 1930 census His name was listed as Frank J. Coberly;
Here's what else it said:
---he was age 57;his place of birth was MO, his mother's & his father's
place of birth was MO; his age at first marriage was 24; Mattie's place of
birth as IL, her mother's as IL & her father's as TN; At that time Frank &
Mattie lived on Hutton Valley road - Willow Springs township - Howell county,
MO.---
---The 1920 census listed Frank's age as 48; place of birth as MO, his
mother's as PA & his father's as Scotland???; Mattie's age was 42; place of birth
as IL, her mother's as IL & her father's as TN; this census also showed a
Tabitha J. Farrar age 59 - born in KS as "head 1" of the household & Frank as
"head 2" This was in Smoky Hill - Saline?, KS. I have no idea who she is
in relation to them other than that it shows that both rented the home.---
---The 1900 census listed them living in Walnut township - Salina? - KS;
Frank's date of birth was show as Oct 1872; his place of birth as MO, his
mother's as PA, & his father's as Scotland; Mattie's place of birth & her parents
were listed the same as the other 2 censuses. Her birth date was listed as
J___? 1878.---
I called my mother last night & she told me that she remembers Frank, her
Grandfather, as tall, thin, bald, wore glasses & played a violin. Mattie
passed away sometime around 1961-1962? & the funeral was in Willow Springs, Mo.
She said she remembered Frank living with his daughter Martha (married to
Donald Yanda) for awhile after Mattie passed away. They lived in IA.
My mother was the youngest of Lorraine & Rupert's 5 kids, so she don't
remember that much about her grandparents.

only a few came over on the Mayflower.
