Hello Mike... I am just sharing some family stories and their throughts. Not everything may be found in some document somewhere. I come down a different line then you do... Ambrose COBBS (married Anne White) is my James COBB's 4th great-grandfather and you are out of James's brother's line. And James COBB (married Sarah Anne Beach) is my 4th great-grandfather... and everyone has something of value to say.
I said that I could not find Ambrose on a ship record in VA... not that I could not find him in VA.
I am just sharing some things that I just learned after talking to some of my elderly family members and cousins.
I could have the Ambrose and Minnies mixed up as I do also have another Ambrose... but he was married to a Sarah. But then again, Minnie can be an old nickname for Mary.
I hate the nickname of Dolly and D that some of my very old and now passed on kin called me when I was younger... I pray that that does not go down in some record of mine. Perhaps Mary White was one of several Mary's in her family or friends circles or church circles... or it was just a name within the family only. I have heard it used in my dad's family before.
Peace and blessings.

<< Ambrose COBBS 'The Immigrant' first arrived in Boston MA up there with his first cousin Henry COBBS 'The Elder' of MA and then came down.>>
Most folks agree that Henry arrived about 1629. Ambrose did not even sell his land in Kent until 1633.
<< Now that explains why we can't find him arriving in VA.>>
I beg differ. It explains nothing. Ambrose patented 350 acres of land in what is now Henrico County, VA in 1639. There is solid record of that.
Where his original arrival is concerned... It is highly doubtful there ever will be a complete and accurate accounting of all the vessels that arrived in the New World, and their passenger manifests.
<< He also said that his wife went by 'Minnie'. >>
Whose wife? The wife of Ambrose the Immigrant? Ann White?

Hello. Wow it's a small world... I am learning more about dad's COBBS/COBB side from my mom's distant cousins who's ancestors lived in MA and in VA. They had told me sometime last year that their DRAPERS and INGLES (as in the Mary (DRAPER) INGLES) ancestors knew some COBBS/COBBs in VA. Their DRAPER ancestor fought against the Rev. Cotton MATHER and the Puritan way of life and witchcraft and so did some of our COBBS/COBB kin.
Now, I just learned something from an old family member that may help us go back further with Ambrose COBBS 'The Immigrant'. Ambrose COBBS 'The Immigrant' first arrived in Boston MA up there with his first cousin Henry COBBS 'The Elder' of MA and then came down. Now that explains why we can't find him arriving in VA. And, that explains why the DRAPERS knew the COBBS in both MA and in VA. I'll have to research this further. So that means that Ambrose COBBS could have been here in America longer than imagined. He also said that his wife went by 'Minnie'.
Rev. Cotton Mather (1663-1728),
Ambrose COBBS 1603-1655 married Anne White
Ambrose COBBS was born before March 12, 1625 in Willesborough, Kent. This was the date of his christening. He died before August 18, 1626 in Kent
The DRAPER cousins have MASTERS cousins and the Ambrose COBBS' estate was sold to Michael MASTERS. Now, considering that MASTERS, BURTONS, and BOLLING are surnames related to Pocahontas and her father Powhatan... this is sorta supporting the old family stories of that say that our COBBS/COBBs were sorta friends with Pocahontas and that she ate dinner with them (COBBS) and that that association gave the COBBS/COBB family protection from Indian attacks. In my direct ancestor's will... he had a mare or 2 stored down at Powhatan's which sorta confirms the family stories. And, my direct ancestors siblings and/or their descendents intermarried with Pocahontas descendents. Cousins also said that our COBBS/COBBs intermarried with Pocahontas' descendents. This may also help to explain who Michael MASTERS was... Michael MASTERS was probably related somehow. Back then... land was generally sold within the family or related kin circle. Just sharing my latest research and finds.
Pocahontas (b abt 1595, died 21 Mar 1617, in London, Middlesex, England from
smallpox) and John Rolfe (b bef. ... VA, d 20 Apr 1729, Cobbs, Henrico Co, VA).
So, based on the family story... then our Ambrose COBBS of Kent line must have been here before the mid 1660s.
It's funny that I learned more about my dad's COBBS/COBBs line from my mother's kin than dad's line on this trip... I wonder if they connect more than what we already know.

Hello. I've been helping out a cousin on his related COBBS/COBB "John Lewis Cobbs","John Poindexter Cobbs" line . And, and from what I have gleened from search of "John Lewis Cobbs","John Poindexter Cobbs"... is that since they both show up in my COBBS/COBB research on my Ambrose COBBS of Kent England/VA line...which makes them both related and that also makes them my distant kin...
What I do when I want to find a connection between 2 people/families at site is to take the father or mother back/forward until I find a connection and if that doesn't work, then I go through the kids and their siblings's and their kids. It's alot of work... but it does pay off.
You have to just play around and see where it leads. It is fun... don't be surprised if you go one way and a record is incomplete and go another way and it connects fine and sometimes the links are broken.
Our common gr,... great-grandparents are Robert Cobb (B:~1627, VA) and Elizabeth Thorpe.
John Poindexter COBBS... his great, great, great-grandparents are my gr,... great-grandparents as well.
Now, John Lewis Cobbs (b. 1763) and Susannah Hamner are also related to my gr,... great-grandparents as well.
Now, John Lewis Cobb's great, great, great-grandparents are my gr, gr... great-grandparents as well.
They have to connect in the middle somewhere... and both John Lewis Cobbs and John Poindexter Cobbs have the same ancestors John Cobbs and Susannah Addison...
Now... this is also interesting... it appears from my playing around here that Edmond Cobbs (Sr.) (~1737 - 1800, VA; his wife is Sarah Lewis (~1740 - 1811, VA; her parents are Robert LEWIS and Jane MERIWETHER) and Samuel Cobbs (his wife is Mary Lewis... her parents are Robert LEWIS and Jane MERIWETHER) are brothers and what makes it even more interesting is that I believe that Sarah Lewis and Mary Lewis (DEATH: 1813) are both sisters or are close cousins.... one place lists John Lewis as Sarah Lewis' father.
Now, they also both connect to John Lewis and Elizabeth Warner.
John Addison Cobbs and and Mildred LEWIS's grandfather was Charles Lewis (wife Mary Howell) and Charles Lewis is the brother of Robert Lewis (wife is Jane Meriweather)... Robert Lewis is Samuel Cobbs' wife Mary Lewis' father.
