BURTON Family
First Generation
1. Thomas Of 'Cobbs'1 Burton was born in England ? circa 1632. Thomas died
January 1, 1685/6 in Henrico Co, Va.. His body was interred in Henrico, Co,
Va.
He married Susannah Hatcher in Henrico Co, Va., circa 1663. Susannah was
born in Henrico Co, Va circa 1640. Susannah died after 1709/0 in Va. Her
body was interred in Henrico Co, Va.
Thomas Burton and his brother John purchased "Cobbs", a 350 acre grant to
Ambrose Cobbs, in 1656. Although the court records of Henrico Co burned in
the 1670's, Thomas had his deed rerecorded in his name only. Thomas deeded
100 acres each to his four sons shortly before his death. John Bolling,
grandson of Pocahontas and John Rolfe purchased all of "Cobbs" by the early
1700's and established a famous colonial home overlooking the Appomattox
River. The last "Cobbs" mansion was destroyed when Gen. Grant advanced to
Lee's surrender at Appomatox Courthouse in 1865. Today (1991), the scene is
the same and John Bolling and some of his descendants rest in a walled
private cemetary on the grounds. This historic site is little changed from
that of Thomas Burton's time and the earlier mining grounds of Indians
seeking war paint from the ochre deposits are still evident. It is haunting
to walk the same ground owned by our first Colonial Burton ancestor some 350
years ago. ________________Patent Book no. 1 Part II, Richmond,Va. Ambrose
