Hello Everyone. I am sorry that I had not gotten back to those who wrote to
me. I have been running back and forth with dad in the hospital and now
that he is stable again he is back in the nursing home again. They ran some
tests and they still are not sure yet what is going on. They changed a few
meds around... hopefully he'll start mending faster and get back on his
feet. I am sorry that I got behind in my e-mails with all of this running
this past two weeks, so if you wrote to me before, I will get back to you.
I promise. I just got on line while eating my lunch before running back to
the nursing home to see dad.
Thanks.
Peace and blessings.

Hello Fellow COBBS-COBB Listers. I found this this morning and was just
passing it along. What a pleasant surprise because I was looking for
someone else...there goes that Fleming COBB(S) again... so we must be
distant kin somehow. The others I don't recognize yet..
I hope this helps.
God bless.
Peace and blessings.

I continue to research the William Henry COBB(1833-1901)line to determine
whether or not he is, in fact, a relative of Dr. William COBB. I have felt
all along that he is; and that both William Henry COBB; Dr. William COBB and
Fleming COBB(S), indian fighter, are in someway related. I will exchange
information with all researchers. For the record, William H. H. COBB and
William Henry COBB are not the same individual. William H. H. COBB is the
son of Alexander COBB. William Henry COBB's father was William COBB whose
wife was Elizabeth ?. William was born in "Pennsylvania". (This information
appears on William Henry COBB's birth certificate. Could "Pennsylvania"
actually be Pittsylvania County, Virginia?)

I've been using TMG for several years. Before that
I used a very popular, and very
ill-behaved genealogy program. I've never used
UFT, but understand it's quite
similar in many respects to TMG; each has it's
strong points. The advantage to TMG,
of course, is that it's still supported by it's
developer and thus holds the hope of
continued improvement. I use TMG because of it's
capacity for customization - the
ability to recorded the data, and produce reports,
in the way _I_ want it to be
done. It produces very professional style reports,
including a very capable source
documentation feature. Plus, it has a number of
analysis tools, including the
ability to color code individuals in nearly any
fashion I can dream up.
The current version has a reputation for being
dated and having a steep learning
curve. Dated, probably. I find the trade off for
the advanced features worthwhile.
Perhaps others will not. The learning curve is a
personal thing - I didn't find that
to be the case, and some other users say the same
thing. But still other users are
frustrated by it. Family Tree SuperTools, a sort
of read-only version of TMG5,
demonstrates that the new interface will be much
more familiar to current Windows
users, and adding lots of nice features. The new
version will also add a number of
new features to make it easier for new users to to
get started with it, effectively
addressing the "learning curve" issue, I hope.
If you are serious about controlling how your data
is recorded and presented in
output reports, I don't know about another current
product that match TMG. TMG will
only get better, and easier to use, when version 5
is released.

Hi Everyone,
This message is a little off-topic but still has a genealogy flavor. The
best (or worst depending on your interpretation) part is that its March and
I have basketball March Madness!!! :-) How about them Kansas University
Jayhawks who were going to choke and lose in the NCAA tournament? :-))
I've been waiting for the release of TMG V5 for over 2 years and counting.
That's a long time when you consider that it was considered overdue 2 years
ago due to compatibility problems. I would venture a guess to say that the
Kansas University Jayhawks will win a national basketball championship
before we see TMG V5!
I've been using UFT but it is no longer supported by the developer so I am
looking to make a change. :-( I'm still anxiously awaiting TMG V5's second
so called release but not holding my breath. I don't want to die from lack
of V5. :-) I'm growing weary of waiting with each passing month and day.
It sure will be nice to finally hear the details about how to purchase TMG
V5.0 and get it in my hands at long last! :-) Is there anyone else using
TMG? Would you mind sharing your thoughts and experiences with TMG or for
that matter any other genealogy software program? Where do you think
genealogy software is headed in terms of future development? Will we use
online programs like Ancestry's?
Looking ahead and also the past, I understand that Roy Williams, basketball
coach at Kansas, has been looking at and evaluating Richard Cobbs, 6'-6",
Moreno Valley, CA as a possible scholarship basketball recruit. Richard is
a junior in high school. Does anyone know if or how Richard Cobbs relates
to our family history research? I'm a little selfish and feel that it would
be wonderful for Richard to showcase his basketball skills at Kansas
University. It sure would be nice to see Richard Cobbs succeed at
basketball. If anyone can provide further information about Richard I am
interested in learning more about him.
My Cobb family married Helton family many way back in 1838, Lincoln Co.,
North Carolina. That Helton (Hilton) family produced a cousin, Dr. James H.
Hilton who was the President at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. The
basketball coliseum on campus is named in his honor. I guess basketball
just runs in our Cobb(s) veins! Well anyway, as you can tell by reading my
signature below I bleed Jayhawk, crimson and blue. I guess there is room
for crimson and blue basketballs in them Cobb veins! :-))
Looking forward to hearing from you about Richard Cobbs, Jayhawks,
basketball, TMG, other genealogy software, Cobb and/or Helton family. MM

Subject: [HOWELL] Melungeons
During the Spanish exploration of the West Indies, many men from the
Mediterranean regions were enlisted as slaves if you will and brought along
to do menial and heavy chores. About a hundred or so were left on one of the
islands as there was not enough food for them on the return trip. Another
explorer came along and promised to take the remaining group back home. As
the ship was returning home, the Spanish captain followed the coast of
America and again ran out of resources and dumped these poor guys on the
coast of what is now Virginia. The men that were left made a life for
themselves among the Indians, intermarried and built homes similar to their
homeland. Along came the English about three to four generations later and
while exploring inner Virginia came upon these men that looked similar to
themselves, some having brown hair and blue eyes. In amazement they asked
who they were and where did they come from.
They said they were "Portuguese".
These are considered the true Melungeons. Now it is considered any mixture
of three tri isolates. Negro-Native Indian-Caucasian, and the original
Melungeons.
There are three physical characteristics. A pronounced bump at the base of
the skull, but that also is found in the Celtic lines. Asian shovel teeth.
That is found by taking your thumb nail and going up and down on the back of
the front teeth. Ridges on the teeth can be felt. The last one is bedroom or
dreamy eyes. Like Elvis Presley. He was of Melungeon descent.
I think the most important reason for knowing if you are Melungeon is
because of the genetic diseases that might show up. One in Familial
Mediterranean Fever. There are several other maladies and if you are fair
and European looking a doctor might overlook symptoms.
The web has some very good info on health issues.
When you research early inhabitants of VA and you find free people of color
in your family tree, that could be Melungeon. The state of Virginia was
pretty cruel to these people starting in the early 1820's so most moved
west and you will find a huge concentration in Kentucky and Tenn. Again some
Melungeon were met with discrimination even there. These Melungeon families
kept to themselves in the hills and the townspeople and merchants hated when
they came to town to shop on the weekends. As a collective group they were
thought to be thieves. Of course that was a ignorant stinking thinking.
Look up Melungeon on the web and find a subject that is very fascinating.

Subject: [NativeAmericanHomeFires] Fw: Florida Civil War Soldiers Index
I have placed my Florida Civil War Soldiers Index on line. This index
contains 63,884 names. Although only some 36,000 served in the Civil War
from Florida, this index contains many thousands of names of men who filed
pension applications in Florida, but served in other states. There are of
course some duplicates and alternate spellings which I will eliminate over
time. This should
prove to be a useful tool as no other comparable index is currently on line.
