William T. Cobbs, son of Thomas and Mary Cobbs of Virginia, has long been listed as William Tandy Cobbs. Records from the BLM (doc. 10425 and 10426) and his will filed in Prentiss Co., MS in 1870 reveal his middle name to be Tellis.
William Tellis married Mary Key, daughter of William and Sarah Wash Key of VA in 1819 (Marriage bond records found in Campbell Co., VA.) The first four children of William Tellis were Tandy Pleasant, 1811; Sarah Wash, 1814; Mary Emiline, 1816; and William Thomas, 1818. This suggests that William was married before he married Mary Key in 1819. Children of William and Mary were: Elizabeth H, 1821; John Wesley, 1821; Charles Martin, 1823; Susan Ann, 1827; James R, 1830; and Frances N., 1834.
Extensive research has failed to reveal the identify of a first wife or to provide an explanation for the dates of birth of the first four children.
William T. and Mary Cobbs migrated to Alabama between 1830 and 1839. Mary died in 1846 in Alabama and William T. in 1870 in Mississippi.
