Stephanie-
I believe that I am related to Ambrose Cobbs through my mother. I have done
the Ancestry.com ($99) DNA test, but wonder how beneficial it is in proving
anything. Ancestry.com now has the DNA Circles which are designed to show
you your known ancestors, but it looks like the connections are based on DNA
matched members who have listed a particular ancestor in his/her family
tree. We both know that making those earlier connections are sometimes
based on information that others have put in their family trees, and there
is no guarantee that it is correct. A person can put wrong information on
his tree from say, the 1700's when there were fewer records, and that wrong
information is replicated on several family trees. When you look at some of
those trees, you can see how much wrong information is posted.
In my lineage, my mother was a Cobb and my grandfather (Charles Ephraim
Cobb) is supposed to be a direct descendant of Ambrose. My grandfather had
only one son who died years ago and without children. I have a brother who
should be related through our mother/grandfather.
Several questions:
Is there a reliable DNA test that I can use to prove ancestry back to
Ambrose and farther back (England/Ireland)? Is there a good test that my
brother or preferably myself could take to show the connection to those
earlier ancestors? I prefer that I do it, since I don't know if I can
convince my brother to do it.
How good are the DNA tests in showing relationships away from the direct
male Ambrose line? For example Angelica Hunt?
Is there the ability to upload my Ancestry.com results to another site for
further analysis? Any benefit in doing that?
Thank you for any help that you can provide.

It is actually very common to have a connection to a COBB line through one's
mother. I believe it is true of both me and the admin for the Ancestry DNA
project, Betty Harris. All that is necessary is to find a living male Cobb
relative of yours to participate. In my case, it was my second cousin (the
son of my mother's cousin).
Best regards,
