favored biblical names.
We'd have to find living male descendants of Humphrey, Samuel T., or
Hezekiah Cobb of Shelby Co. TN to prove or disprove.
Someone else on the list might know more!

Does anyone recognize these Cobbs:
Josiah Cobb, arrived in Caldwell Co. KY by 1812, with sufficient assets
to purchase several parcels of land and brought or purchased several
slaves. Died 1817. Widow was Ann. Ann appears in 1820 census with a
family of 10 and 5 slaves. She doesn't appear after that - apparently
remarried or moved elsewhere. When Josiah's land was sold in 1838 his
heirs (relationship unknown, but likely his children?) were Humphrey,
Saml T. & wife Nancy A., Delila and Harriet Cobb of DeSoto Co. MS, and
Hezekiah Cobb of Shelby Co. TN.
Hezikiah is found in the 1840, 1850, and 1870 census of Shelby Co., b.
c. 1804 in SC. Humphrey is found in the 1850 census of DeSoto Co., b. c.
1801 in SC. Samuel T. Cobb is found in the 1850 census of DeSoto Co, b.
c. 1804 in SC. There is a Josiah Cobb and a Jesse Cobbb in Greenville
Co. SC in 1800.
Jesse Cobb, arrived in Caldwell Co. about 1814. Also had assets to
purchase land, and had slaves. Doesn't appear in the area after 1826.
Jesse's land was adjacent to Josiah's, and they appear linked as
witnesses on deeds, and mentioned together in county court orders. I
suspect he was related to Josiah, possibly as son, but more likely as
bother or cousin.
I'm quite sure they are not descended from the Cobb's of Pawlet, VT, who
were descendants of Henry of Barnstable, because I think all of those
descendants are known. I don't think they were descendants of Henry at
all, because of the names, reinforced by the birthplace of he heirs in
SC. Henry's descendants favored a small set of male names, not including
any of these, and spelled Josiah as Joshua. My guess is this group is
from the Virginia Cobbs, but I know little about them.
Anyone have any ideas?
