I've just been doing some Cobb searching and found that my Thomas Cobb
(1762-1841) was from West Creek, New Jersey -- about 10 miles from where I
live. I will be taking a ride there sometime soon to look in the local cem.
He did not leave NJ. He was my 5th great grandfather. I'll be looking for
my William Cobb b.1805. Not sure right now if they are the same family.
I'll get back to you all when I find more info.

Well, since we are 'speculating' here, I decided to jump in here. I am
wondering whether my William Cobb and his brother/cousin Thomas Cobb could
be from this line that went to New Jersey and then moved west? Since no
other Cobb family seems to claim my Cobbs, they HAD to come from somewhere.
My Cobb brothers/cousins? were supposedly 'from' VA (as they would IF they
floated down the Ohio River?) - and are found living in KY in 1814-15 when
my John Cobb was born (on the Kinder farm along the river between Henry
County and Shelby County) then both moving to IND to live on the Bear Farm
along the Indian-Kentuck Creek just north of the Ohio River.
There HAS to be a Cobb/Cobbs family who lost TWO brothers/cousins about this
time frame. My Cobb/Cobbs family has tested DNA from Ambrose, but maybe
some of this family came later too?
We speculate that William was the father of my John Cobb since the 1830
census shows him with one son under 10 while Thomas had daughters.
Still hoping to find my Cobb family.

Earl, I too have Cobb family on my mother's side. It is a very common situation.
Being female, my second cousin took the Y-DNA for me... do you have
any living male Cobb family members who can take the test?
It looks like some descendants of Morgan Cobb of Dorset, England went
to New Jersey, among others:

My COBB's are on my Mothers side too. I have done the mtDNA test. I didn't
get much information.

Hi Gary,
My Cobb's are from my mother's side. I don't know when these Cobb's came to
New Jersey. I have William Cobb b-1805 in NJ. Then another line starting
with Thomas Cobb b-1762 , his Son Constant Cobb b-1789. I'm not sure at
this point if these Cobb's were related. I will see what I can find.
Regards, Earl

Gary,
Sorry to jump in on your conversation with Sandy, but I have many Cobb
ancestors from New Jersey on my Mothers side. I have taken the FTDNA Y37
and the Ancestry DNA test, is there anyway that I can trace my Cobb family??
Thank you and again, sorry for butting in.

Do you know of any living male descendant in this line, Sandy? If so,
it is true that a Y-chromosome DNA test can take you back many, many
generations. On the other hand, sometimes it is hard to fill in the
blank between the last known person (in this case, William) and the
Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) of his genetic family, i.e. Ambrose
COBBS, Joseph COBB, Nicholas COBB, or Henry the Elder.
If William himself says he was born in AL, I would go with that. I
know from my research into my own family in TN that many left there
for AL, so I would say it was a fair guess that it was the boys'
grandfather who was born in TN.

famileys can be tied to the ambrose or the other cobb i know from my
own reserch at least one other member of my family went to the us i
know he went to new jersey althow he returned to the uk after five

I agree. These McMinn Cobbs at that point in time are all the same family.
They show no signs of not being the same.

you would probley be better doing just a Y DNA although the autosomal
DNA give you a larger possable spectrum of candidates and even
narrow down several lines the only way you will be able to get a
decent idea is run both a Y and M DNA sample if you can afford them
