"Is that the number of main groups in the display grid at dna.ancestry.com, with none of the strays included?"
I believe that is correct. However, there are of course more than nine, but the documented data on several is so sketchy at this point I considered it best to not count them.

Mike, can you please tell us how you arrived at the "nine" figure?
Is that the number of main groups in the display grid at

Just want to be sure that when I quote the number that I'm on the same
page as you.
Thank you very much.

Mike,
Points well taken. But, what is the alternative? What will you do with that huge database of carefully researched information?
It's an issue I've been thinking about for some time, especially for my extensively researched Cobb line. I've invested considerable effort to researching the descendants of Gideon Cobb (1718 - 1798), a descendant of Henry "the Elder," and his wife Abigail Dyer. Much of that is now published on my website - http://reigelridge.com/roots/cobb.htm - with primary documentation of my wife's directly line and those close to it, with census and secondary sources primarily for the cousins.
Publishing on the web offers the advantage of easy updating, addressing your concern that it gets outdated. But what happens when I'm no longer able to maintain the website - with luck it stays up a few years if someone pays the rent, but eventually it will come down for one reason or another. I'm not confident that the commercial genealogy websites offer much more longevity.
Electronic media remains in a period of rapid development - media becomes unreadable for lack of suitable hardware in a decade or two, if the media itself remains usable that long. Data formats have only a somewhat longer lifespan it seems. Using electronic means for long-term storage seems problematic at this point.
So what is one to do to preserve one's work? For now at least, high-quality paper seems the longest-lived media, imperfect though it may be.

TO PUBLISH OR NOT TO PUBLISH ... THAT IS THE
QUESTION!
Making a long story short, my father and I got started in
Genealogy in 1962. I have been an active researcher ever since.
Since this was before the advent of the computer, research was done the old
fashioned way ... manually. We had to personally examine musty old courthouse
records, and personally tramp through old abandoned country cemeteries. The
folks at the public library and the National Archives across town came to know
us on a first name basis. It was hard scrabble and slow going, but it had one
major benefit. Every scrap of information we found came from PRIME SOURCE
DOCUMENTATION. Our sources of information were actual original documents.
Nothing was the product of what someone else told us. Data provided by other
researchers went into a separate file pending our personal confirmation.
In 1972, dad decided to publish a book, a history of our family. By then we had
accumulated ten years worth of data. Everyone even remotely related to us knew
we were working on the family history and they were all badgering us to publish
a book. I was ardently opposed.
The issue was that not only did we have 10 years of data, I also had ten years
of experience. I had developed the skill to recognize "pulp
genealogy" when I saw it. And I can tell you, the woods are full of Cobb
family histories that are not worth the paper they're printed on.
Indeed, at my "Cobb and Cobbs" website there is a Hoax Alert. I will
quote two parts: (1) As of this date (October 2007), the Cobb DNA Project now
has shown there are AT LEAST nine Cobb families in the US with ancestral ties
to Great Britain who are not genetically related; meaning they do not share a
common ancestor. (2) ..... a by-product of the Cobb DNA Project is that (with
rare exception) just about everything ever published in the US ..... is both
obsolete and wrong!
People publish for different reasons, good and bad. The majority have good
intentions, but to borrow the old cliché, "The road to hell is paved with
good intentions."
It was my argument that once you put something in print you can't take it back.
Well, my dad didn't listen. He published ... and he regretted it from day
number One. The experience of just dealing with the publisher was a nightmare.
In the end, it cost him a heart attack and a small fortune on books that didn't
sell (that he priced to sell at cost). And within days we came into new
information that made us realize the book contained a number of errors, and
there were a number of "blank spots" that we could have filled in ...
if we had not published.
More than thirty years has passed. My database is now many times larger. I have now been in almost every State Archives East of the Mississippi River;
and this doesn't begin to number the county courthouses and cemeteries I've
been in. I have been to England twice. I receive on average 175-200 emails per
day, with the vast majority being genealogy related. Not a week goes by that
someone doesn't beg me to publish another book. And I steadfastly refuse to do
so, and for the same reason ...
ONCE YOU PUT IT IN PRINT, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT BACK!
Now
the primary medium of genealogical research for American researchers is the
internet. I would wager there are people reading this now who are active
researchers, and who have never been in a library, a courthouse, and a
cemetery. Some Internet data is reliable and some isn't. But the point being
made is that new data ... long lost records ... are being found almost
every day. By the time a published hard copy book comes off the press ... it is
already obsolete, outdated, and proven wrong.
If a person is determined to publish a family history, I would recommend the
following minimum:
#1 - Learn what defines PRIME SOURCE DOCUMENTATION and rely on that ONLY.
#2 - Do not use the "Preponderance of Evidence" method of supporting
a conclusion. Read this 1997 article by the American Board for the
Certification of Genealogists ... http://www.bcgcertification.org/resources/prepond.html
#3 - Read these two articles from America's First Families:
“Beware of the Source Hoax” http://personal.linkline.com/xymox/fraud/hoax.htm
“Family Group Record Fraud” http://personal.linkline.com/xymox/fraufgr.htm
#4 - Do not publish data that goes back more than four (4) generations, or 100
years, UNLESS you have solid DNA evidence to support it.
#5 - Limit your book to your direct family line only. Do not try to include
cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. Stick to your direct line. This will at least limit whatever damage you accidentally do.
#6 - Remember, you only get one chance to get it right.

The Amanda Cobb that you are referring to was the daughter of Wiley Cobb and Sarah Brooks. Wiley died in 1857. I am not sure that Amanda was ever married. She had one 6 year old child in 1880, and if she had others than William T. in the early 1880s, they could be married and gone from the household by 1900. Her 1874 daughter was Mary F. Cobb.
The Jesse Cobb that you are referring to was the son of Winstead D. Cobb and Nancy Unknown, and his wife was Amanda Lawson, the daughter of Curren Lawson and Mary Manis.

I have an original postcard photograph of "Evelyn Cobb - Centralia, IL - taken May 25, 1911 - age 3 yrs., 25 days", which I'd like to get back to descendants or family members.
I found Evelyn Cobb with her sisters Camillia and Delephine, in the 1920 census for Centralia (Marion Co.) IL. Evelyn was age 11 and lived with her mother and stepfather: Cora Hargraves (37) and husband Vernie (38). In Ancestry OneWorldTree, mother of Evelyn is Cora who is shown as Cora Hill, born Xenia (Clay Co.) IL.
Get back to me at margerice(a)prodigy.net if you are related to Evelyn Cobb.

Hello Patricia,
We discussed information about Elizabeth Victoria Cobb back in February. I became ill and have not been able to do much research since. Is there anything else you can tell me about Victoria or her daughter Oconee? Some say Oconee's next of kin when she was admitted to the Milledgeville Sanitarium was Victoria's brother, Lawrence, but Victoria had no brother Lawrence. She did have one named Hiram Leroy. Victoria and her mother, Eliza Loden lived next door to him in the 1880 Oconee, SC Census.
