DEATH OF A NOTED INDIANIAN
Vincennes, Indiana, June 25 - Thomas R. Cobb died yesterday, aged 65 years. He was a member of the Indiana legislature from 1858 to 1866; was a delegate to the national convention that nominated Tilden; was a member of Congress from this district from 1876 to 1888 and as a member of the Forty-seventh Congress attained considerable fame as chairman of the committee on public lands by introducing a bill forfeiting the lands of railroad corporations for non-fulfillment of contracts, thus saving the people many million dollars.

Paul, According to Gage Family Research here in Chautauqua Co. Betsey Gage
in 1805,Vt. married a William Cobb b.Mar.29,1777, d. Jan.5,1815. Before
1819, Betsey married Nathan Howard b. Feb.4,1771. The1820 US Census for
Jamaica has Nathan Cobb's household containing ; 1male 10-16 (William would
be 14), 1male over 45 (Nathan 49), 2females under 10 (Nathan and Betsey had
a dau. Jane b.1819, the other maybe an unknown dau. of William and Betsey ),
1female 26-44 (Betsey). The 1830 US Census for Jamaica has Nathan Howard's
household containing ; 1male 5-10, (Nathan and Betsey had a son Subbinus
b.1824) 1male 40-50? (Nathan was 59), 1 female 5-10 (Jane) 1female20-30
(Who?) and 1 female40-50 (Betsey was 44). Missing is William Cobb and a girl
b.1810-1820. The 1840 US Census for Hanover, Chautauqua,NY. Shows William
Cobb and Nathan Howard living right next to each other. Nathan 69, with
dau.Jane 21, son Subbinus 16, wife Betsey 54. It appears that by 1830
William and his sister may have been out on their own, he 24yrs. she
10-20yrs. William married Mary Ann Botsford Nov.5,1831. The birth date of
Mar.29,1777 for the elder William kinda sorta fits him in between Daniel
Cobb b.1776, and Simeon Cobb b.1778, some of the 8 children of Daniel and
Hannah Hodges Cobb. To Confuse the issue more on of Betsey Gage's brothers,
Jones Gage, born right after Betsey named one of his sons, Simeon Cobb Gage.
No, Jones didn't marry a Cobb, he married Philena Cook. The question for the
last 2 years, was, who were William Cobb b.1806, parents, William and Betsey
Cobb. Now the question is who were William Cobb b.1777, parents? As for the
William Cobb who died 1825, in Marcellus Onondaga,NY. History of Onondaga
County had him coming from Vermont, and he did have a son Daniel. Many Cobb
Researchers had him as descending from the "Barnstable Cobbs". Therefore, I
didn't pursue his ancestry or descendancy. Now I've noticed that some of the
"Authorities" have withdrawn that particular William's ancestry from the
Web. Later Cliff

Cliff,
Very interesting find and I add another possibility to the parentage of your
William Cobb in the previous query.
(1) With "Betsey Gage b.Feb.12,1786,Hubbardston,Worcester,Ma.", we have
William Cobb, b. abt 1780, in Grafton, Worcester Co., MA. His older siblings
were born in Medway and Medfield, MA. He died bef 1825, in NY (Onondaga Co.)
with an unknown spouse but two children known (Page and Elizabeth). His
parents ended up residing in Marcellus, Onondaga Co., NY. His grandfather on
his mother's side, Jeremiah Carpenter, b. 1716, R.I., d. 1793 in Bennington,
Bennington Co., VT.
[Note: Older research, not connected to a Cobb line then and some
info by way of a will and other records. ONONDAGA COUNTY WILLS - COBB,
William, of the Town of Marcellus. Will dated December 8, 1825; Probated
April 9, 1826; has "Page Cobb and Elizabeth Cobb, children of a deceased
son, William, Jr."]. William Cobb Jr. was one of eight children of William
Cobb and Molly Carpenter. Some other of their children died before their
father's will. William and Molly's son Daniel Cobb has descendants to the
early 1900's.
Some later info by research & by another's DNA that links this line
to Unknown Cobb of Taunton line by way of an Edward Cobb who married Hannah
Allen (she was b. in Medfield, MA) in Boston, MA in 1735.
Edward Cobb had a birth in Medway (?) or "of Walpole, MA"(?) or in
Taunton, MA(?) - DNA proven to be from the Taunton line. His war military
record of 1756 has him aged 44, born Taunton, Bristol Co. (or Brimfield,
Hampden Co.) MA and residence then in Brimfield, MA. For this Edward Cobb,
it is proposed (supposed) he might have been a son or grandson of a William
Cobb (thought by another researcher to perhaps be an unrecorded son of
Edward Cobb, brother of Augustine Cobb, having had two sons recorded (Edward
and John). Edward & Hannah Cobb left Grafton, MA, where some children had
been born, in 1750 and ended up in Hampshire County (inherited land?).
One of their sons (William) and a daughter (Jemima) raised families
in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., VT. Others of this line ended up in NY.
(2) The other possibility has been communicated before as being perhaps the
William Cobb, son of Daniel Cobb and Hannah Hodges of the Taunton line.
William Cobb's brother Daniel Cobb raised a family in Windham, Windham Co.,
VT. This William has not had a spouse or family connected to him as yet.
Perhaps there is another unknown Cobb as parent of this William Cobb, but
given the marriage data for Betsey Gage, the first is possible. Following
the children Page & Elizabeth Cobb, if they survived after 1825, did they
end up with their mother or raised by other Cobb family? Are they listed
with the Howard family? Not having their ages or William Cobb's marriage
date complicates this possibility.
Paul Cobb

As an addendum, the 1850 Census for The Town of Hanover, Chautauqua Co.,NY., shows a Mary Gage age 85yrs.(b.abt 1875) and her dau. Clarissa living with William and Mary Ann Botsford Cobb. That Census also shows that William had named a 14yr. old son Asa (After his Grandfather?). Thus I'm quite certain Betsey Gage was William's mother. Cliff

A Betsey Gage b.Feb.12,1786,Hubbardston,Worcester,Ma., d.Feb.12,1850,Hanover,Chautauqua,NY. She was the 4th of thirteen children of Asa Gage and Mary Polly Bolton. Asa was b.Jul.22,1758,Milford,Ma.d.Jan.26,1837,Hanover,NY.. At least 7 of his children were born in Jamaica,Vt. Betsey apparently (Howard Family Records) married 1st. a Cobb, a good bet would be a William Cobb, she then married Nathan Howard.!
In the 1840 Census for Hanover,Chautauqua,NY., on the same page in line I found the following: William (Mary Ann)Cobb, Nathan (Betsey)Howard, Calvin Gage, Parker Gage, Sarah Gage, G.A.Howard,(Nextpage)E.B.Howard, Sullivan Howard, Moris Howard and Mary Gage (Widow of Asa, Mother of Betsey). It looks like it can be established that William Cobb's Mother was Betsey Gage-Cobb-Howard. Now, who were the parents of this William Cobb married to Betsey Gage? Anyone have any ideas? Cliff Cobb

This looks like a Nathaniel Cobb that I have in my tree. I have not been able to get beyond him to his parents, or his wife's parents. Any help?

Hello Patricia,
Elizabeth Victoria Loden was the daughter of Elizabeth Cox and John E. Loden. Elizabeth Cox was sister to my distant grandfather, Gabriel Cox.
I have researched most of Eliza and John E Loden's children and am now working on Eliza Victoria. Could you help me get her file correct with some information about her. From your posting, I believe you are her great-granddaughter....Gail
