Hi, I hope you are having luck finding your family. However, you do not descend from Jesse and Nancy Ann Cobb as far as I can tell. Jesse's Cobb/s line came to VA about 1635 and then moved south and west. I have never found any of them north of VA and TN. Good luck.

Kelly, we have emailed each other a few times this summer. I published a book on the descendants of Jesse and Nancy Ann Cobb in 2006 and have a handful of them left.
My family has always spoken of Cherokee Indian blood in our line but it would have had to come through Nancy. The Cobb line is English although a distant Cobb relative in colonial times was a son of Pocahontas. As I recall, Pocahontas was not Cherokee and we don't descend from her at all. You can still contact me at vcgreene(a)att.net

I just got George Arthur Cobb's birth certificate in the mail yesterday! His parents were Edward and Octavia (Piper) Cobb and he is indeed a younger brother of Frederick E Cobb who was the managing director of the Falkland Island Company. I've gotten some of the details filled in on my tree if you want to take a look.

Jan,
I am still searching for proof that Nancy ANN Reese Mullins Cobb was at least
part Cherokee Indian. I have never found anything conclusive one way or the
other in Cherokee records. I believe that she looks "Indian" in the charcoal
portrait I have of her. I continue to search every new Cherokee source I come
upon. Is anyone else searching for her as an Indian??
Her middle name was not Mandy. It was Ann. The name Mandy came from the death
certificate of one of her younger sons, Marion Rice Cobb. Apparently the person
taking the info for the death cert. thought he heard the name as Mandy but
gr-uncle Marion had her name in his Bible records as Nancy Ann Reese. However,
in colonial times and back in England the name Reese was often spelled Reece,
Rice, Rhys and all were pronounced the same. We do know that she had a son prior
to marrying Jesse Cobb - Jackson Kenzie/Kinzie Mullins and she used Mullins as
her surname when she and Jesse married. Perhaps she was a young widow with an
infant son.
A descendant of Jackson Kenzie Cobb took part in the Cobb DNA project but did
not even come close to any of the other Cobbs. He did turn out to be a match for
one of the Mullins groups. I has always wondered if Jesse fathered him out of
wedlock or if his father was actually this unknown Mullins. I believe the DNA
test settled that matter. However, I have been unable to contact any of the men
who matched him. None of them respond to my queries.
While I use the spelling Jesse for our ancestor's name I sometimes find it
spelled as Jessee. This second spelling is found on a few records and may well
be correct. I just don't know for sure. Either spelling works for me until it is
proven one way or the other.
Any help would be appreciated.

My Usual - I believe the first one. was b. abt. 1792 in PA. Beekmans Patent has him listed as the son of Joseph Cobb b. abt 1752 and Abigail Holloway Stevens b. 10 Oct 1765. This information is also listed in the Mayflower Society. In 1850 census for Stockton, Chautauqua County,NY. His name is spelled Wenal (understandable with his strange name. His wife Sally is also listed with 9 children. I believe they had 2 older daughters not listed here (from an earlier census before the census listed names). Sally's name was given as Phelps in the obit of the oldest son Luman. Usual died abt 1881 Mt Pleasant, Henry County, IA.
Another Usual Cobb was born about 1833 in PA. I believe he was the son of one of Usual's brothers. In 1870 he was living in Jefferson, Luzerne, PA with his wife Sarah and 3 children. Sarah may have been a Swingle. (Some people say Usual b. abt 1792 married a Swingle, but not according to his son's obit. I think this second Usual married the Swingle.
Usual b. 1792 was the son of Joseph Cobb, the grandson of Asa Cobb II and Mary Finch.
Does this help? I have more in my files.

While searching for an Ariel Cobb b. Ct, d. Oh., I came across an Abel Cobb in the 1810,1820 US Census' for Warren, Litchfield Ct. By the 1830 Census he was gone from Ct., although I did find an Abel Cobb in Greene, Madison,NY that fit his age description. By the 1830 and 1840 Census, I found an Abel Cobb living in Groton, Tompkins, NY., a couple of places away from Elisha Cobb. The Abel Cobb from Ct. married an Elizabeth Kent May 1,1791, Warren,Ct. The Abel from Groton,NY was a Revolutionary War Vet. receiving a pension. Abel was buried in the West Groton Rural Cemetery (Sometimes called Cobb Street Cem.) near Elisha Sr. Cobb. There are about 25 Cobb graves in that Cem., mostly descendants of Elisha. Elisha was a "Taunton Cobb", son of (William, Morgan, Augustine). Tompkins Co. seemed to be a destination or stopping off point for "Taunton Cobbs". Amasa Cobb son of (Josiah,William, Morgan,Augustine) erected the 1st.Log home and 1st. tavern in the Hamelet of McLean, near Dryde!
n and Groton, and lived there for 30yrs. before moving to Ohio. It is a guess, but I think the Abel Cobb in Groton is of the Taunton Descent, and that the Abel who was in Groton from 1830-1849, was the same Abel that was in Warren,Litchfield, Ct. 1810-1820. That begs the question, does he fit in with Nathaniel from Canaan,Litchfield, Ct.? And how does he fit in with Elisha Cobb? Anyone have anything on Abel? Cliff Cobb

Hi Kelly,
The book I published on the Cobb family is still available through me. I thought Nancy Ann (nee Reese) Mullins Cobb looked like Indian. The family lore was that she was part Cherokee but I could never prove that. Her son Marion Rice Cobb, brother to my gr grandfather James Pulaski Cobb, had the original charcoal portrait of his mother and he had in his records that her name was Nancy Ann Reese. His death cert. says his mother was Mandy Reese. Someone thought they heard "Mandy" as her name when it was actually Nancy. Nancy's 1st son was Jackson Kenzie Mullins but used the Cobb surname. His DNA matched a Mullins line out of VA. He was a half brother to all of Nancy's other children. If you want a copy of my book, it is $55.00 and that includes shipping. Cliff (and Jim),
Note: Isaac Cobb's genealogy, p. 154 only lists the first three children of Elijah Cobb and not the later children so no Ariel/Arial Cobb & others noted. Do you have a source for the other six children, including Ariel Cobb? We only know Ariel Cobb was listed on same census page in 1800 in Canaan, CT with Elijah Cobb. Ariel Cobb was there in 1810 and 1820 also.
Sarah (Cobb) Case (27 Jan 1810, CT - 20 Dec 1872, OH; buried in Draper Cemetery in Hudson, OH) was the mother of 2 daughters by 1860 census in Streetsboro with marriage abt 1834 with Jerry M. Case (1 Apr 1807, CT - 4 Oct 1882, OH).
If she was a daughter of Arial/Ariel Cobb (and Lucy ?), then her birth fits between son Chester Cobb (1808, CT - aft 1882, OH) and son Arial/Ariel Cobb (16 Sep 1812, CT - 5 Mar 1882, OH; buried in Hudson, OH), followed by son Chauncy Cobb (1816, CT - aft 1882, OH). Could have been a child b. abt 1814 there.
1800 census had 4 minors and 2 adults (he above age 26, she less than 26); 1810 census had 7 minors and 2 adults; 1820 census had 11 minors (possibly one non-family) and 3 adults (his mother or wife's mother?).
Through census records there are some descendancy lines from sons Chester Cobb and Chauncy Cobb in Ohio.
Being one of 10 children and 2 known living in 1882 by Ariel Cobb's obit, there is a gap of unknown children. Sarah Cobb fits this family line with the fact of being in Streetsboro, OH in 1850 and 1860 where Ariel Cobb had a family along with his wife's parents and her brother's family as well.
Appears as if these lines could be added to the Barnstable lines but besides the 3 known children of Elijah Cobb, what has documented the others, including Ariel Cobb?
Thanks,
Paul Cobb

Census data for Litchfield County Connecticut Cobb heads of household. 1790: Elijah W. and William both Litchfield: 1800: Abel,Warren; Ariel, Canaan; Elijah, Canaan; Nathaniel, Colbrook; 1810: Abel, Warren; Ariel, Canaan; Elijah, Colbrook?, Nathaniel, Colbrook, Nathan, Goshen; 1820; Nathaniel, Colbrook, his sons Allen, Daniel, Jacob B. James, and Nathaniel Jr., all of Colbrook. The 1840 Census for Streetsborough, Portage, Ohio shows an Ariel Cobb b. 1770-80. The 1850 Census for Sreetsborough shows a Lucy Cobb age 75yrs.(b.1775) born Ct., living with a Jerry M. Cease? b. Ct. and his wife Sarah b.1811, Ct. Conjecture would be that Sarah is Lucy's daughter and Lucy is the widow of Ariel Cobb. At least one researcher has an Ariel Cobb b. 1775, Canaan, Litchfield,Ct. the son of Elijah Cobb b.June 30,1734,Canterbury,Windham,Ct., d.Mar.1809, Canaan. Elijah married an Amy Lawrence on Mar.20,1760. Elijah and Amy had 9 listed children: Persis b.Nov.21,1761, mar. Noah Spencer, Dolly b!
.Jul.16,1763, mar. George White; Elijah William b.Sep.24,1765, mar.Sarah Whitney; Abigail b.Aug.27,1767, mar. Joseph Allen; Lydia b.Jul.22,1770, d.1770; Anne b.Feb.1,1771, d.Feb.21,1771; James B.Nov.4,1773, d.Mar.11,1807; Ariel b.1775; Nathan b.1779. All births listed in Canaan. Elijah is listed as the son of Judah and Dorothy Cobb which would appear to put him in the "Barnstable Cobb" Line. As Paul Cobb previously mentioned another Ariel Cobb, Son of Nathaniel and Lois Drake Cobb was born Oct.28,1808, Colbrook He mar. a Mary A. Cowdery and is probably of the "Taunton Cobb" Line. Your Ariel Cobb born 1813, might well be the son of Ariel b.1775, Canaan. Maybe a "Barnstable Cobb" researcher can help you more. Good luck. Cliff Cobb

Hi Mary,
It is very nice to hear from a Cobb Descendant. I don't have much on
Hiram except his name which I took from William Cobb's will. Hiram had
a sister named Mary who is my 4th Great-Grandmother. She married a
Cyrus Crego and had 3 children Polly (Crego) Hickok, Stephen Crego and
Charles Crego. If you have the same will that I have, it does not
mentioned her but does mention her three children. She must have died
before the will was made out. I am still trying to find out more info
on her.

George Arthur Cobb and Frederick E. Cobb were brothers
Dorothy Agnes 1886 was one of his daughters. She married an Irish doctor-Thomas Ivoy CONSIDINE They had 11 grandchildren of whom I am one.
Hubert Vincent was his yougest child.
Arthur as a son of Frederick would have been their first cousin.
If he was your Great Uncle that means that Arthur must have had at least one sibling. That sibling would have been your Grandfather or mother.
That would make us second cousins.
I live in Ireland and would love to hear from you with a view to building up the COBB family tree.
