My Samuel Elijah Cobb was born 1810 in VA (D 1884 in AL)
His father was John Croton Cobb (sometimes the spelling is Cobb then others it's Cobbs) 1774-1853 VA
mother Martha Rebecca Hunt 1777-1815 VA
John Croton Cobb's father was Samuel Cobb (1741-1827 in VA)
Could this be the same Samuel Cobb? The records I have for him however say his father's name was Samuel (1698-1757 in VA) also, and his grandfather was William (1655-1705 in VA).
William's father was Ambrose (1635-1683 in VA) and his grandfather was Ambrose Cobb born in Petham, Kent, England 1603 and died in Bristol Parish, VA in 1656.
If any of this sounds like it could connect to your family tree please let me know. Thanks ANIWI
aniwi84(a)hotmail.com
FYI: Ambrose Cobbs from England built "Cobbs Hall" or "Cobbs" a plantation in what is now Chesterfield County, VA (originally Henrico Co, VA. It was sold in 1656 immediatley after the elder Ambrose died (no later than Jan 1656) and was eventually bought by John Bolling (great grandson of Pocahontas) in 1704. This may or may not be the only connection that my cobbs have with Pocahontas but its interesting to say the least

Karen -
I will send you some documents attached in a separate email.
As a reply here: Both John S. Cobb and his widow Frankey (Smith) applied for pensions based on his service during the Revolution. John died in 1841; and the 1840 census of Pickens Dist, SC shows him listed as a Rev War pensioner aged 82. Frankey died in 1851.
John's Will and estate records are now in the office of the Probate Judge of Pickens County, South Carolina. The file is complete. A thorough examination of the accounts reveals one important thing - the number and names of John's children and many of his grandchildren. From these records it is possible to state with absolute conviction that John S. Cobb and wife Frankey were the parents of twelve children, that included Robert Cobb, Sr. I have personally been there and examined this file myself.
My copy of these records is now packed away, so I am relying on memory from this point on. John S. Cobb's estate was very complex and was not finally settled until 1860, some 19 years after his death. It is necessary to examine every separate piece of paper in that file in order to get a full accounting of John's heirs. When the dust finally settles it becomes clear that several of Robert Sr's children by his legal wife Ellen Greer were beneficiaries of John's Will.
Regards,
Mike Cobb

Does anyone have any documents for proof of John S. Cobb's Revolutionary
service and a list of documented children.
I am trying to prove that Robert Cobb, Sr. was a son of John S. Cobb. Was
there any will or anything to go on to prove John's children.
I am also a descendant, through his son James Humphrey Cobb who died in Hart
Co., Ga. But doing DAR papers for another descedant who comes through the
son Robert.

If either of you have information about this that would be great. Thanks, nikki

Hi Lesley, Go to The "Cobb and Cobbs" web site at the free pages on Rootsweb.com. There you will find some info on the "Taunton" or "Blacksmith Cobbs" as they are often called. The site will give you a rudimentary knowledge of who we are and where we immigrated from, as well as some individuals in that line. The site is updated periodically but don't expect to find all of your missing ancestors on it. There are a few "Taunton Cobb" researchers who are on line at the Cobb Message Board and Cobb DNA Board, who can help you. I would suggest that you start a new thread with your inquiries as people looking for Allen Cobb information will be wading through a lot of Jonathan Cobb stuff. Be aware that there were other "Taunton Cobbs" as well as "Barnstable Cobbs" who settled in Illinois around the same time as Jonathan i.e. John Cobb 1st. cousin to Jonathan (John's father Josiah was David Cobb's brother). John settled in Crawford Co.,Il where as Jonathan settled in Morgan Co.,Il. I!
f you start a new thread I'll send you some info I have in my files on Jonathan. That way it'll keep them separate from the Alanson Cobb Information. Cliff Cobb

Pocahontas was married to John Rolfe. The great-granddaughter of Pocahontas and John Rolfe was married to Col. John Bolling who pruchased Cobbs Hall from the son of Ambrose Cobbs (first Cobbs to settle in the US in this line) in Hopewell, VA on the Appomattox river. I have a ton of research and pictures and exerts from books that show this.
My line goes directly back to John Cobbs of Kent d.1324.
There are stories posted here on ancestry.com about Ambrose Cobbs that tell the story.

This was very interesting and maybe Pocahontas wasn't in
your Cobb lineage but she was married to a Cobb.(which one I cant remember) It found this while I was in England. It was also
found in some of the books where she is buried but he was
just referred to as COBB. I visited her grave. I traveled to Kent
visited lots of Cobb graves. Met Cobbs. And have loads of info
still to go thru. Maybe. I'll find which one she was married to.
And I remember an aunt having talked about it when I
was a child.

Jonathan is a "Taunton Cobb" (Jonathan5,David4,William3,Morgan2,Augustine1). More than likely he moved to Illinois to take advantage of a land grant for his service in the War of 1812. While in various places in New York he lived near brothers, sisters, uncles,etc.. Jonathan and Hannah had 10 children that I know of: 1.Achsah Silbania (Axie)Cobb b.Mar.10,1798,Gui!

Parma and Clarkson are Townships in Monroe County(separated from Genesee Co.,in 1821) near Rochester,NY. There is no descendency from Henry Cobb, "The Barnstable Cobb Line". Hope this helps. I have been working on this and am stuck with who the parents were of Jonathon Cobb who married Hannah Joy. Orrin, their son, was born June 18,1805 in Rochester, NY and may have had a twin named either Parma or Clarkson.
I know later that the line comes from Samuel Cobb (1654) Barnstable, MA who was the son of Henry Cobb and Sarah Hinckley. I believe Samuel married Elizabeth Taylor and they had ten children: my linen is their son Jonathon Cobb 1694. Jonathon married Hope Chipman 03-01-1682 Barnstable, MA and she was the daughter of John Chipman and Hope Howland. Their child was Joseph Cobb 08-24-1690 who married Hannah Clark. What am I missing?
Any help would be most appreciated.

I am just starting to trace my mother's family and read your post. Please share any information you. My line includes Orrin Cobb (1805) Rochester, NY. I believe he was the son of Jonathon Cobb and Hannah Joy. My great grandmother, Clara Ida Cobb is the daughter of Orrin and Martha Ann Eikelbert Cobb. Clara is the mother of John Albert Rouse, my grandfather. She was born March 26, 1959 in Sangamon Co. Illinois. (Thanks for Cliff Cobb for this information)
Is there a posted visual Family Tree somewhere with this line?
Thanks again for any help you can provide.
