While much of this is accurate, a few corrections are in order in case someone should come across this...
Thomas Chittenden never came to Eddyville - he had been dead two years by the time the Lyon party got to Eddyville.
While the story persists that Gideon operated iron furnaces in Eddyville, I've found no evidence that he actually did. Several of his sons clearly did, and it was two of them, Robert L. and Gideon Dyer Jr. who sold the Eddyville Furnace to William and John Kelly on 12 Aug 1850.
Modena was the niece of Matthew Lyon (actually, the niece of his second wife) but he was never governor of Vermont. She was the granddaughter of the first governor of Vermont, Thomas Chittenden.

I just want to say "Hi, Cuz"! Ty Cobb's ancestry, as far as I know it, goes back to John Cobb, born around 1830 in Cherokee County, North Carolina. His ancestry goes back to possibly another John Cobb, perhaps from a different state. John Cobb (1830) is the father of William Hershel Cobb (1860 - 1905), who is the father of Tyrus "Ty" Raymond Cobb, born in 1886, and died in 1961. Ty has five children; I think all who have recently died.

I am searching for any information available regarding the family of Mercy/Mary Cobb, b. abt 1820, Mass. She married James Hutton, (of England, then of St Lawrence Co, NY), in 1839, in Gates, Monroe Co, NY.
They lived in the Rochester area approx 10 yrs, giving birth to Elizabeth 1840, William Henry 1842 and Richard, abt 1844-6. About 1849-50, they migrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in which area, another son and 2 more girls were born. They all remained in the Cleveland, Amherst, Ohio area, where they were all buried.
I don't know anything about Mercy/Mary's parents or siblings.
Census records state that she and her parents were born in Mass.
I need to learn more about the Cobb family, from which Mercy is from.
Older census records show Cobb families in Rochester, and surrounding towns in 1840 and earlier, but, of course, the children were not named at that time. James Hutton, and wife (Mercy) appear on the 1840 census of Gates, Monroe, NY.
Does anyone have a clue, or any gems you can share with me?
Thank you, one and all, for any help.
Donna.

Wonderful! Are there any descendants of John W. Cobb and Elizabeth Brundage still there? Or John W. and his second wife Eunice Yarns? Someone else wrote an answer to your question about what needs to be done for a male Cobb to submit a DNA test. It just involves sending a cheek swab to a laboratory. There is a Cobb DNA site on ancestry. If there is a male descenant of John W. Cobb there, I will be glad to pay the cost of a basic DNA test.
On a slightly different subject. Is there anyone there who knows who were the parents of Elizabeth Brundage Cobb. She is buried next to a son of Parmenus and Lillis. Was she a sister to either of them? Diane

A male Cobb descendant may participate in the Ancestry.com Cobb DNA study. By sending in a swab of one's cheek cells, a DNA analysis can be made and the results compared to the DNA profiles of existing Cobb family lines. In this way one can eliminate the possibility of a connection to some Cobb family lines and hopefully find a matching line that could provide important documentation for a relationship with that particular Cobb family.
The web site for the Ancestry.com Cobb DNA study is:

I too am a descendent of Asa Cobb and I live in Greenfield Twp, PA. There are male Cobbs all over the place, some even farming homesteads from the 1800's. What is it you need done to determine the DNA connection?

I have a file containing almost 500 individuals from County Kent and County Surrey, England in the 13th-18th centuries. In this file the name is found spelled Cobb, Cobbe, and Cobbes. I have compiled this file over the last eighteen months or so.
Some of these individuals are identified, and some are not. That's my purpose for writing ... to see if someone can identify those "unknowns."
I am willing to send a GEDCOM to anyone who emails me direct.
Let me caution right now. This is a working file ONLY. Do NOT just merge it into your master database without studying it thoroughly. You'll hate yourself afterwards.
