Oh, I missed another one - Irvin S. Cobb was a great-grandson, not a grandson, of Gideon and Modena. His father was Joshua Clark Cobb, his grandfather Robert Livingston Cobb who reportedly built "Rose Hill" and was a son of Gideon.

Hello,
In your Cobbs search, have you found a relationship with Nelsons? My mother used to talk about the Cobbs....Her father was Andrew Nelson and they lived in Coal Fork, Campbells Creek, Charleston, WV. He was born 13 Sep 1886 d. 24 Aug 1981. He was married to Bessie Lee Estep. My mother was Marcie Louise Nelson, sisters were Ruth Nelson Halstead and Mildred Nadine Nelson. My mother passed away in 1974 and there is no one left with any information. Thought you may have something.
Thank you!!!
Patty Harmon Sanderson

Hello, I'm the McCobb family genealogist & researcher & I believe that Samuel was actually a McCobb, the son of William McCobb & Mary Crawford of Rutland/Princeton. Samuel was born 1762 - 1764. WHEN HIS FATHER WILLIAM DIED IN 1778, he & his sister Martha were left with Moses Gill as their guardian. Samuel & Azuba used their McCobb surname as indicated in deeds of 1797 to Andrew Smith. All of their children except Samuel (who married Polly Clark) used the surname Cobb. I have tracked the Cobb's that migrated to Camden, Maine, where my Father & his family were raised. It's kind of ironic that they may have come in contact & never realized that they were related. Because, William McCobb was a brother to Samuel (Boothbay), James (Georgetown/Phippsburg), & George ( Warren area) McCobb.
I personally have a Massachusetts "Cobb" in my ancestry, but it is through my paternal grandmother, Mabel Clair Hodges. Jacob Burt married Betsey Cobb Jan 11, 1758. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Cobb of Attleborough, son of Samuel Cobb & Lydia Haskins. Fell free to contact me directly at ampurplecat(a)yahoo.com Allan Paul McCobb

Have you not subscribed to the Bertie County, NC Rootsweb page? It is a very busy active site and you will probably get many answers to your queries. I subscribe to this Cobb Family Forum and also the Bertie County, NC site.
I have a copy of Joe Cobb's book. Many of my cousins also have copies. One first cousin who lives in Alexanderia, VA said he saw a copy the other day selling for $399. Check E-bay and Amazon.com to see what they are selling for. You might also see if you can get a copy through inter library loan at your local library. I use that system a lot when I need books that are out of print.
Joe Cobb's wife sold them after his death and I think after her death his daughter had the rest of the copies. I don't know her name or email address though.
I have been researching my Cobb/White family from Bertie for some time and am now trying to do research on Hardy Humphrey Cobb. What Cobb line are you descended from?
Also I noticed that this thread began with an email from K. Paul Johnson back in about 2001. I have been reading his book, Pell Mellers, Race and Memory in a Carolina Pocosin.
I have found it a great read and a good source for information on Bertie County that you can't find otherwise. I got my copy from Amazon.com. I need to email him in the near future and ask him some questions that I have on the White family.
Please keep in touch.
