Hi,
Mine is the Allen/Buchanan tree. Since contacting you I have found the Cobb Family tree, which has generations before Andrew Lucy Cobb. By the look of it that person has access to parish records that are not yet transcribed online.
I am afraid that I have no photos or copies of records.
I'd love to know where the Lucy/Lacey comes from, presumably a maternal granparents surname, but I can't find it.
regards
Cathy

Thanks. The name "Lewis" in your family goes back earlier than to just Nicholas Hamner Cobbs. Ambrose Cobbs (the Immigrant)and Ann White had Robert Cobbs (among other children), and a few generations later, this "Robert Cobbs line" eventually produced Samuel Cobbs, Edmond/Edmund Cobbs and John Addison Cobbs. Edmond Cobbs married Sarah Lewis, Samuel Cobbs married Mary Lewis and John Addison Cobbs married Mildred Lewis.
Edmond Cobbs and his wife Sarah Lewis had John Lewis Cobbs who married Susannah Hamner (and one of their sons was named John Lewis Cobbs "Junior"....a brother of Nicholas Hamner Cobbs...."Junior" married Mary Bolling and had a son of his own who was named Bolling Cobbs). John Lewis Cobbs married second to Judith Shelton Price, and one of their children was named Amanda Cobbs, and Amanda came to Buckingham Co., VA with her half-sister Ann Hamner Cobbs (who had married Baker W. Davidson in Bedford Co., VA in 1827; Baker W. Davidson was a son of Baker Davidson and Elizabeth "Betsy" Womack, and a grandson of William Davidson and Martha Baker). I have traced this Davidson family (which is a branch of my own overall Davidson family) back to at least 1682 in James City Co., VA.
Note: As I recall, the above Sarah Lewis had been married to Waddy Thompson (out of the Robert Thompson "I" who was in New Kent Co., VA in the 1600s) before she married Edmond Cobbs. I guess this explains why Edmond and Sarah had a son named Waddy Cobbs.
Samuel Cobbs and his wife Mary Lewis had Robert Cobbs who married Ann Grizzage Poindexter, and that couple had Dr. John Poindexter Cobbs (who married Jane Meredith Garland, a relative of Patrick Henry). Mary Lewis' brother William Lewis was the father of the explorer Meriwether Lewis, and the father of Mary Lewis and William Lewis, Colonel Robert Lewis, was a second cousin of President George Washington.
John Addison Cobbs and his wife Mildred Lewis had several children, including Howell Lewis Cobbs and Mildred Lewis Cobbs. This family left VA for NC and then GA.
Edmond, Samuel and John Addison Cobbs, all sons of a John Cobbs and Susannah Addison, had a brother who was named Thomas Addison Cobbs, Sr. Thomas Addison Cobbs, Sr. married Susannah Moon, and one of their children was Sarah "Sally" Cobbs, who married John Benning (of "Fort Benning fame" in GA). A member of my overall Davidson fmaily in Goochland/Cumberland/Albemarle and finally Buckingham Co., VA was named Charles Davidson, and Charles' son was named John Benning Davidson. I suspect that Charles Davidson was married to Benning woman out of the same overall family as the above John Benning who married Sarah "Sally" Cobbs, but I have not been able to determine her given name (Buckingham is a "burned county").
If you disagree with any of the above, please let me know. Thanks.

I am John Lewis Cobbs 4th, My father, grandfather, great gandfather, and great great grandfather share the name which was originally chosen by Nicholas Hamner Cobbs, the First Episcopal Bishop of Alabama. He died on the day Alabama succeded from the Union and is buried in the Anglican cemetary in Montgomery. My brother, who is a judge in Washington, is named after him.
For years it has been said (by members of the family) that the Bishop chose the name "Lewis" from his friend Meriweather Lewis, a questionable claim sincd Meriwether Lewis died in the 1830s. Both the Cobbs and ehe Lewises, however, came from western Virginia, and my grandfather claimed that all the men in the family are supposed to be buried facing the Peaks of Ottter so that will be their first sight on Resureection Day. On my mantle is a silver chalace engraved "N.H.Cobbs to his son J.L.Cobbs. . . " and so on to my father who had it engraved to me.
If this is of any help to you, please let me know.
John L. Cobbs.

My father always said that our ancestors were from the Orkneys, and that's only a hop, skip and a jump from Norway.
Andrew Herkes, brewer, born 1760 in Haddington, had a son, David, born 1785, but died before 1794. Another son, born 1794, was also naned David. Since then, it's always been in the family. Andrew, born 1783, was a slater, and it's been in the family until the late 1800s.

WOW! I never knew that they had children. I just assumed that as James already had 5 children, that he didn't have any more.
David was the eldest child. Ina was indeed Ernestine.
My earliest Herkes is Andrew, born 1760 in Haddington. (I have traced his wife's side back to a wedding in 1577.) So I don't know where they came from before that. There were Herkes names on Familysearch.org from the Orkneys. Remember that the name has been spelled Hercus, Harcus, Harkes, etc.
Please contact me off the message board, re family photos, etc.

Hi Stephen
Sorry to barge in :), your last sentence has had me intrigued. A few different members of the Herkes family from different branches (ancestry not established but would be before 1650 odds), have also expressed the idea of them coming from Norway or perhaps Norsemen. It would appear that this fragment has been passed down through the generations.
Eileen, your line also has me intrigued, I don´t know where it merges with ours, but it has to somewhere. The Christian name of David didn´t come to light in our branch until late 1800s. OPRs are a stab in the dark, and sometimes I feel I am stabbing into pure air. David was however, a christian name in the Herkes branch from Innerwick, but their main occupation was that of Smith, and I believe your David was a slaterer, although they couldn´t all be slaterers or smiths, especially in a household of several boys.
Look forward to receiving your comments.
Jacalyn

Hello Eileen
I came across your post about James Herkes' marriage to Anne Johnston. I think Anne was my grandmother. She lived and died at 7 Livingston Place in Edinburgh. She was the 2nd wife of James Herkes who worked for the Post Office.
However, there were definitely children from this marriage - 3 daughters, Eleanor (my mother), Betty and Nan who are all now dead, plus a son, Billy, who died at quite a young age and another called David, although I am not sure whether he was a half brother from James Herkes' first marriage.
To bring it up to date, my mum married Albert "Jeff" Jeffery (an RAF officer)and moved around from Edinburgh, to Stranraer, Cyprus and finally Gloucester. She had Stephen (me) Brian & Alison (twins).
Betty married Jack Brotchie and lived most of her life at Forrester Road, Corstorphine and had Stuart and Elizabeth.
Nan married John Craigie, a solicitor and lived a fair part of her life in Morningside. She had no children
As we lived some distance from Edinburgh, my memories of the family are fairly sketchy, but I can remember the name Captain Cobb being mentioned in the family and I also vaguely remember "Ina", my mum's half sister, which is presumably short for Ernestina.
I was also told that the Herkes branch of the family came form Norway. Does any of this ring a bell with you?

This is my great great grandparents. I would like to know when and where they were born. They were in Mi,at least their daughter Minerva was by 1847 when her first daughter Mary was born.
Also I would like to know about other children of John and Nancy. Also the ethnic background of both.
I do not have any other information on Minerva's first daughter than the birth date- her last name was WOLCOTT and was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson WOLCOTT and Minerva. Their second daughter Josephine Roselete was my grandmother.
Any information on this family would be so appreciated.
Thanks

I hope you have found your father. I am researching the Cobb line of my family & the mention of Indian interests me, My Dad always said we were Indian & when I was back in SC & Nc doing research I couldn't find anything in the records where my Gmother said she was from, so I called her(she was 90) & told her I could find nothing about her family and she said to me my mother was a full blood Indian, which makes her mother Isabella & JC cobb indian for the names I am sure of as they came from her bible.
If there anything I might have I would love to share. Have not found the connection to Indian yet. E-Mail wseeker5(a)yahoo.com Thanks
