Has the dust ever settled on the Vinkler/Vintler
controversy?
Were there more than one of them?
In this source there are three different spellings:
Vinkler
Vintler
Vintlers
Source:
HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1706-1786
VESTRY BOOK OF ST. PAUL'S PARISH
[Near the bottom of page 311 is this one
dated somewhere AFT 3 March 1743 and BEF Sep 1751
at the "end of the old Book" ...]
"N,* 25 Orderd into one precinct for processioning the Lands
of Edwd Wade, William Via, Rowland Horsley M,rs
Crumpton, Edw,d Wade Jun,r Vinkler COBBS, William ..."
[Page 421 middle of the page the section begins ...]
"N.* 14. At a Vestry held for S,t Pauls Parish 30th Nov,r 1763
Ordered into one precinct for processioning the Lands of ...
... David COBB, Burrell Bassett, Vintler COBBS Orphan John Carrs

proceedings according to Law. ..."
[Page 422 top of the page it says ...]
"... now belongs to W,m Massie, and the land of Vintlers COBBS
heir Now belongs to David COBB."
[I am seeing maybe two Vinkler/Vintler's, father
and son (Orphan), and also a David and a Samuel.
David seemed to end up with the land -- maybe because
the Orphan was too young to get it legally?
I have no other data to place this tree I assume
under the line of Ambrose somewhere -- because
in most cases it is COBBS not just COBB?
St Paul's Parish was created from
St. Peter's Upper Parish in New Kent Co. when
Hanover Co. was spun off of New Kent Co. I think.
Maybe after 1704?
Can anyone help and show me a simple descendancy
report where these three/four COBBS fit in?]
regards, Cal

I would love the information that you have. Some of Asa Cobb's sons went south and I have had a hard time tracing them.
Also, I haven't been able to find the tie to England. Asa Cobb's wife doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere. If you have that information as well, I would be most grateful.

Cobb and Long - Pickens/Oconee, South Carolina
Massiah Long appears on successive census enumerations from 1840 through 1870; in Pickens and Oconee counties, South Carolina. He was born about 1810 and died in November 1870.
Messiah has acquired a tainted reputation as being quite a womanizer. LDS records can be found showing he had child-producing relationships with at least three different women, two of them named COBB. The same source also identifies these women as being named Sarah and Frances, and assigns each woman a totally different set of children.
It is apparent that this claim has been spread far and wide by a host of researchers. However, a thorough examination of available documentation shows this entire story to be completely false.
Additional claims have been advanced that he was involved in a relationship with Frances Caroline Adams, daughter of Robert Cobb Sr.and his mistress Nancy Adams; and another that he had multiple native-American connections. Again, thorough research seems to dispel both.
Messiah Long does not deserve the reputation he has been given.
He was married only once, to a woman named Sarah. She appears on successive census enumerations from 1850 through 1870. She was born about 1815 in South Carolina. She outlived her husband, as she was named as a legatee in a court dispute involving his estate in 1871. Her exact date of death is unknown, but she was apparently deceased by 1880.
Massiah Long had six children, to wit:
Mary b.1830. According to lore, she married Alexander Evans and died in Texas.
Susan b.1834. Married Robert Cobb Jr. Had one child and died about 1861.
Elizabeth b.1836. According to lore, she married a Mr. Smith.
Nancy b.1840. Married Robert Cobb Jr, widow of her sister Susan. Produced nine children and died in 1924.
Balus b.1841. Enumerated on 1850 census. No further record.
Emily b.1847. For some unexplained reason she did not appear on a census until 1870.
Balus Cobb was born 1851. He was enumerated in 1860 in the household of Massiah Long. It can only be speculated why he was listed in the Long household. But it is commonly accepted he was the son of Ephraim Cobb and Louisa Turner.
>From 1870 through 1920, Balus was enumerated as a resident of Oconee County, South Carolina. His exact date of death and place of burial are uncertain. It has been popularly reported he died on January 28, 1951; and that he was buried in Mount Ruhama Baptist Church Cemetery in Catawba County, North Carolina. The following are established facts. (1) He cannot be identified anywhere on the 1930 census. (2) His death was not recorded in South Carolina. (3) The reported death date was for a child named Baylus A. Cobb who died in Oconee County, South Carolina, at age six. (4) The various cemetery listings for all of upstate South Carolina do not show where he is buried. (5) The same can be said for the cemeteries of Catawba County, North Carolina.
Balus married Rebecca Carnie about 1870. She was born 10 May 1849, and died 21 November 1927, in Oconee County. They had the following children:
Brye Cobb (1871-1954). Married Nancy Ramey.
Steven b.1872. Married 1st, Sarah Alice Ramey. Four children. She died 1918. He married 2nd Lucretia ???. Still living 1930 in Rabun Co, GA.
Frona G. b.1876.
Joab (1877-1919). Married 1st Samantha Dunlap. One child. Married 2nd Lona J. ????
Joel b.1879. Married Lily Ramey. Seven children. Still living 1930 Morgan Co, GA.
Joseph b.1880 South Carolina. Living in Oconee County in 1900, with son Kerry.
Dovie b.1882 South Carolina
Roland b.1885 South Carolina
Robert (1891-1931). Married Allie ???? One child.

This is good data and there are other sites that also list this, NY Times, his college, etc.
I find one problem wit the report about all this. Laura Dayton Sprague's father's name is Daniel J Sprague, not Donald J Sprague.
I am John A Sprague Sr, great-great-grandson of Daniel J Sprague and everything else matches. My great grandfather George Dayton Sprague was her brother.
I have also done searches for Donald J Sprague and cannot find anyone alive or dead that comes from that time period.
I am not complaining on this posting. I just wanted to clarify a probable mistake in the article.

Hello,
I am looking for information on Nathaniel Cobb, born circa 1790 and father to Louisa Adeline Cobb (1816-1895) of Putnam and Upson counties in Georgia. Louisa married James Henry Hays (1820-1905) of Upson County Georgia. Nathaniel is my great-great-great grandfather, and I would really like to know more about him--especially in regards to any possible relationship to John Addison Cobb. Thanks!
