Hello Mike and other COBBS/COBB Researchers.. I found these references while researching Briards (dog) in old VA. I was curious to see if they were around back when my ancestors were there... they were... they go back to 1777 when Jefferson got a few from general Lafayette.

“DEATH OF OLD RESIDENT
Miss Elnora E. Worthington, Mother of Prominent Family, Passes Away in
House Where She Lived 43 Years
Mrs. Elnora E. Worthington, widow of the late Robert S. Worthington,
died on Tuesday at her home 223 Wisconsin, where she had lived since 1880.
Mrs. Worthington was born at Rome N.Y., July 13, 1840, and came to Chicago
as a child in the early fifties with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Cobb.
After her marriage to Mr. Worthington in 1861, she lived in Chicago until
1878, when, with her husband, she became identified with social and civic
affairs of Oak Park in its early days, also taking an active part in Grace
Episcopal Church. Since the death of her husband in 1903 Mrs. Worthington had led
a quiet life of devotion to her home and family. She was a woman of
generous impulses, a kindly, loving nature, and had the rare quality of making
and keeping many friends. An accident which resulted in a fractured hip gave
her eight months of suffering in a wheel chair, and her death from pneumonia
has brought her the relief for which she longed. A brief service was held at
her home on Friday morning, with interment at Oconomowoc, Wis., where she
was laid to rest beside her husband. One daughter, Mrs. Harry B.
Richardson, survives her, also two grandsons, Robert W. and Harold B. Richardson, and
two great grandchildren, Alice Josephine and Madelon Richardson.”

FAMILY REUNION
On the 10th of June at the residence of Nathan Cobb, of Oak Park,
occurred a very pleasant and interesting reunion of the four brothers composing the
Cobb family. The names ages and residences are as follows:
Nathan Cobb, of Oak Park, in his 81st year.
Rev. N. Cobb, Washington D.C., in his 79th year.
L.J Cobb, 5946 Wentworth avenue, Englewood, in his 75th year.
Rev. H. W. Cobb, of Waukegan, in his 72nd year.
It has been many years since the brothers and their wives had all met
together, and is needless to say the reunion was a joyous one, and many a
pleasant remembrance of youthful days was indulged in.

Nathan's obituatries:
"Mr. Cobb, the father of the Mrs. Robert S. Worthington, wife of the
Assistant Secretary of the Board of Trade, was instantly killed yesterday at
Oak Part by a freight train on the Northwestern Railroad. The old
gentleman suffered from a sunstroke early in the summer, and has not been in his
right mind since, and Mr. and Mrs. Worthington, with whom he lived have
endeavored to keep him at all times under the eye of some member of the family.
He wandered from the house unobserved, however, yesterday, went to the
railroad track, and was struck and killed by a passing train. The funeral will
take place at noon to-day."
"Nathan Cobb of Oak Park, father-in-law of Robert S.Worthington of
the Board of Trade, was struck and killed by a Chicago and Northwestern train
at Oak Park Friday afternoon. Mr Cobb was 86 years old and so feeble that
he had to use two canes in walking. Friday he was walking on the
Northwestern tracks and failed to notice the train until it was within about fifty
feet of him. He was not quick enough to escape. He was picked up from the
ditch dead. At the coroner's inquest, held yesterday afternoon, the
railroad company was exonerated."
Oak Park Vindicator, Friday July 1, 1892:
“On Friday afternoon of last week, Mr. Nathan Cobb, the aged father of Mrs. R
S Worthington, was instantly killed at the crossing of Maple Avenue by being
knocked down by a Northwestern freight train. Mr. Cobb had been helpless for
some time, walking with the aid of two canes, and although the engineers
whistled and applied the brakes, Mr. Cobb was unable to cross the tracks in time to
prevent the catastrophe. He was a native of Bath Maine, and eighty-six
years of age. He came to Chicago in 1849, and was at one time connected with the
father of Lyman R Gage of the 1st National Bank in a planing mill. The
funeral took place Sunday to Oakwoods.”

“OBITUARY
ELVIRA C COBB
Died in this city, early Sunday morning February 6th 1898, Elvira C Cobb,
mother of Willard A. Cobb, aged 82 years.
Mrs. Cobb was born in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer county, N.Y., November
15, 1815 She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jacob Kingsley and early in
life moved with her parents and family to Dunkirk N.Y., where her father was long
an honored practitioner. She was married there in 1837 to Dr. J.V. Cobb
and removed to Rome N.Y., where her life was mainly passed until her removal to
Lockport. Her husband, Dr. Cobb, was for forty years one of the bestknown
and most successful physicians in Central New York. Owing to his declining
health Dr. and Mrs. Cobb accompanied by their niece, the late Miss Mary E.
Howell, moved to this city in 1876, where their son resided. Mrs. C. survived them
both. Her ruling characteristics were unswerving faith in the Christian
religion and devotion to the church of her choice; unusual fortitude under all
circumstances no matter how trying; self-sacrifice and self-abnegation that
realized it fullest fruition in the happiness of others. Both at Rome and in
Lockport she was a member of the First Presbyterian church and daily honored her
profession. She was especially interested in missionary work and her
benefactions in such directions were constant. It is probably not too much to say
that she will be missed in the church where her fidelity was known and
appreciated.
Mrs. Cobb was connected with many of the old and leading families of
Western New York. Such honored names as the Abells, the Van Burens, the
Prendegasts, the Champlains, who early helped mould history, especially in the
counties of Erie and Chautauqua, were all closely allied with her own immediate
family and many of the descendants of them all are to day occupying prominent
positions in life.
Mrs. Cobb was ill some ten days. Her disease was typhoid fever. All
that medical aid could do and solicitous care suggest was done to avert the
blow. But all was of no avail and Mrs. C died as above, gathered as a shock
fully ripe for the reaper.
The funeral was attended from the family rooms in the Smith block at
3:30 this afternoon, there being a goodly attendance of sympathetic friends. The
service was conducted by her pastor, Rev. Benj. M. Nyce, who spoke beautiful
words in remembrance of the departed. Mrs. Jesse Peterson sang two
selections, one of them being “Asleep in Jesus,” in a mos tender and touching
manner. The floral gifts were many and lustrous.
Among those present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Colgrove,
Salamancan, Judge James Van Buren and Mrs. Lyman Van Buren of Dunkirk, nieces
and nephews.
The remains will be taken to Rome, N.Y. to-morrow for burial beside her
husband and her niece, Mary E. Howell, both former residents of this city.”

THE LATE W. A. COBB.
THE REMAINS ARRIVED IN ROME AT 1:37 P.M.
They were accompanied By Friends From Lockport--Deposited in the Family Plot
in Rome Cemetery--Further Particulars of Mr. Cobb’s Last Illness.
The remains of Hon. Willard A. Cobb who died in Lockport on Tuesday,
reached here at 1:37 p.m. today. They were accompanied by William L. Cobb of
Chicago, a cousin of the deceased, the Rev. B. M. Nyce, G.G. Lansing, Mrs.
Tucker and Undertaker F. P. Weaver from Lockport and JOhn C. Birdseye of the
state civil service commissioner’s office in Albany. Hon. William M. Collier of
Auburn, one of MR. Cobb’s colleagues on the civil service board, came here
this morning. The other member of the board, Col. Silas W. Burt of New York,
is ill at his home and was unable to be present. Many beautiful floral
offerings came with the remains. There was one design bearing “30” signifying
among printers, “the end.” This was from the employees of the Lockport
Journal. Other designs were a Masonic emblem from Niagara Lodge, F. & A.M., of
Lockport, and a wreath from the employes of a large book printing concern of which
the deceased was a part owner. The remains were enclosed in a handsome
black broadcloth draped casket, with an oak outside box.
The remains were taken to the Rome cemetery and deposited in the family
plot beside those of Dr. and Mrs. J.V. Cobb, parents of the deceased. The
committal services were conducted by Rev. Benjamin Nyce of Lockport, assisted
by Rev. Charles G. Sewall of the Presbyterian church.
The bearers were Dr. C.C. Reid, A.M. Jackson, J.S. Hovey and A.C.
Kessinger.
Relating to the death of Willard Adams Cobb of Lockport, the Journal of
that city has the following:
While Mr. Cobb had not been in his usual good health for some time
there has been nothing about his condition, up to the very few hours of his death,
which occasioned apprehension as to his state. He returned the latter part
of last week from Albany, where he had been summoned in his official capacity
as president of the State Civil Service Commission to a conference with
Governor Roosevelt.
On his way home to this city he stopped in Utica, where he had a host
of friends, some of whom he made in the earlier days of his life, when he was
the city editor of a Utica paper. The Utica Observer says:
Only last week Willard Adams the editor of the Lockport Journal and
President of the State Civil Service Commission, held out a hearty had to some of
his friends in Utica. He was on his way home from Albany,m and stopped over
to see Mrs. Bussey, one of the early friends of his family. He looked well,
and made no complaint of ill health, although it is now said that he has
but weakly born the loss of his mother and another near relative during the past
two years.
On the morning of the day of his death Mr. Cobb seemed cheerful and in
better health than at any time since his homecoming from Albany. During the
morning he called in Dr. H.C. Hill who remained with him during the morning
at his urgent solicitation. Earlier in the morning he was on the street and
he spoke cheerily with such of his acquaintances as he met. Dr. Hill left
him in the afternoon. Mr. Cobb seemed to require no special medical
attendance, but craved companionship as would be natural in a convalescent state. Dr.
Hill returned to Mr. Cobb’s apartments early in the afternoon and found him
lying upon a couch in his sitting rom in an unconscious condition. He at once
summoned Dr. M. S. Kittinger. It at once became evident that there was little
if any hope of recovery. Everything was done that medical science could
suggest but death came quietly at a few minutes before 5 o’clock in the
afternoon.
No sooner had the news become in a measure public than reports and
rumors began to circulate as to the cause of death. It may be said on the
authority of attending physicians that these reports were unwarrented by the
circumstances surrounding his death.
Mr. Cobb is survived by no relative close in relationship than cousin.
Mrs. Henry M. Colgrove of Sharon Pa., recently of Salamanca, is a first
cousin, and Willard L. Cobb of Chicago is a second cousin.
To the Memory of Willard A. Cobb
We’ll miss from the off the Journal’s page,
The skillful work you’ve penned;
And all will sadly mourn your loss,
Esteemed and gifted friend.
Your pen was ‘mightier than the sword’
And triumphed more, by far,
Than all the famous battle blades,
Unsheathed in brutal war.
And when you won in gallant fight,
Great kindness you displayed,
Your genial wit soon healed the wound,
Your trenchant pen had made.
Your busy hands are now at rest,
Your life’s work has been done;
Among the brightest and the best
An honored place you won.
Now, at your old and distant home,
They’ll make your ‘narrow bed,’
Near by the ones you loved and lost,
You’ll sleep with kindred dead
CHARLES H. SQUIRES.
Lockport, N.Y., May 31, 1900
The Lockport Union-Sun says: About three years ago Mr. Cobb’s mother, a
most estimable lady, died. This deep affliction left an indelible mar upon
her loving son. Not long after, Miss Howell, Mr. Cobb's cousin and the last
of his relatives whom he had known on terms of intimacy followed her to the
grave. Mr. Cobb was prostrated and although he rallied, he seemed to be
afflicted by n overwhelming sense of isolation that bordered closely on acute
melancholia. But this could not take a complete hold upon him because of his many
duties, official and professional, and he seemed in a measure to forget his
grief. For years he had not been in the best of health.”

Greetings
I'm new to the list and am descended from Henry COBB (c. 1596-c. 1679). The
last COBB in my family is Elnora COBB (1840-1923) who marrired Robert Searing
WORTHINGTON.
Their daughter Martha Elnora inherited some money from Hon Willard A COBB of
Rome NY who died in 1900 in Lockport. He was the son of Elvira and JV COBB.
I have an obituary in R.S. Worthington's scrapbook.
I do not know anything more about Willard Cobb and would love to connect him
to the family that I already have.
thanks

Hi Cherre, It has been a while since we have corresponded. I saw your descendants of unkown Cobb on the message boards and thought I would give you the correct info about Mary Campbell if you still don't have it. She was born November 7, 1840 in Pennsylvania on the border with Ohio; that is why either state can be given as the birth state. Her parents were James Campbell and Mary A. Unknown. She died March 6, 1920 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is buried in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. She married February 14, 1857. I don't have any new info about "James Thomas Cobb".

Also does anybody happen to know the years he was a member of the UGA board of trustees?

Hi,
Do you mean you are unable to contact the File Manager (Lyn) of the Taunton
line at Cobb and Cobbs (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb/ )?
Since the file manager did update the gedcom in March, you should be able to
make contact to add your line to the next update or contact Mike Cobb there.
My first research has been and continues in the Taunton line (although from
a different son of John and Jane (Godfrey) Cobb and their descendant line)
as well as the other ones from Mass. I too have the line and more that
includes Samuel Cobb (1753 - 1839) and Silence Barney (1756 - 1814) & their
9 children. Of which child is this descendant (Tisdale, Samuel, Nathaniel or
Hanover of the sons)? Currently I have Nathaniel's line with more
descendants and look for more on the family line.
Also, if you want to contact me to add any data to the Taunton line,
(currently over 13,000 Cobb and connected families), please do so.

For the time being the Cobbs of Mason Co, KY are included in the report on the Cobbs of Western Kentucky. Go to ... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb ... and scroll down to the Western Kentucky report. The earliest known ancestor of that bunch was Francis Cobb, born about 1791 in England.

Hi,
Further to my earlier post I have more information on my relative Andrew Cobb. He was born on 28 Feb 1880 in Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Scotland, the son of Henry Cobb and Margaret Ferguson. His middle name was Soutar rather than Archer as previously thought. I have also found a letter written to another relative of mine informing her of Andrew's death in 1959, in Cape Town, South Africa. The letter says Andrew had six daughters and two sons.
Please get in touch if this information rings any bells, or if you have Cobb relatives in South Africa.
If I can be of any assistance with anyone else's research please let me know. I have traced the Cobb line of Brechin, Angus back to 1650 so far.
