Those whose Cobb ancestors were on the Kentucky frontier in the early 1800's may find some information on early documents I've just posted on my website of interest.
I've been searching the County Court, land, and other records for anything related to Gideon Dyer Cobb (1773-1834) and his family. In the process I've found records for not only his brothers and descendants, but also a few other Cobbs I've not been able to identify, and some of the other folks they associated with, including Matthew Lyon and his family.
I've now posted abstracts of a good part of it on my website, at http://reigelridge.com/Genealogy/Resources/Eddyville.htm
The material includes County Court Orders and various land records for Livingston Co. during the time Eddyville was in that county, and likewise for Caldwell Co. from then until the middle of the century.
There is a search function available if you want to try that.
I'd love to hear from anyone interested in Gideon's family, or anyone who can identify the other Cobbs in the area.

My gggg grandfather was born 1792 S C. William Cobb, I believe is a descendent of Henry the Elder, and I also believe his middle name was Henry. About 1919 William Cobb married Catherine Jackson in Wilson Co TN, she died in childbirth abt 1820. I believe William then went to Carroll Co TN, he is listed with a wife and two children under 5 yrs.on the 1830 census, then moved on to Obion TN. I need to know who William's parents were and the maiden name of his wife Louisa...It is possible that William was married at a young age in Pendelton S C before he married Catherine. Thanks

Oops, wrong Wm. P. There was the one that I just mentioned and then three grandsons of Alex by that name. I guess the Wm. P. you want was the son of John S. and Mary Rigden. John was born in SC about 1811, and I would have to check my notes but I believe Mary was born in AL. I also have a picture of John S. with his third wife, Rebecca Gentry, if that is your line and you are interested in having a copy.

Below is the info I have on the Joseph Cobbs in our family that lived in LA. Hope it will help answer some your questions.
William Pinckney Cobb b. July 22, 1830 in Shelby County, AL - died Feb. 6, 1904 in Bellwood, LA, he married Sarah McCaskill (probably daughter of Elizabeth) on May 5, 1850 in Shelby County, AL. He is buried at the Shady Grove Cemetery. He married Sarah Caroline Ashmore on Sept. 11, 1887, in LA. He is reported to have had 6 children by his first wife:
Mary Elizabeth, 2/14/1851,
George Washington 4/3/1860,
Theodocia 1862,
Joseph Pinckney 11/20/1862,
Joseph Brooks Cobb b. July 5 1849 - d. Feb. 15, 1918 and is buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Natchitoches Parish, LA (about 3 miles south of Provencal, LA). According to the 1870 Ward 3 Natchitoches, LA Joseph married a lady named Susanna Martin and they had a son William, 9 months old. By 1880 Joseph appears to be a widower, he appears age 31, with sons William 11, Joseph 9, Elisha 7, Andrew 5, and Charley 3, and his mother-in-law, Mariam Martin 60. Joseph married a widow, Martha M. Leonard, on Dec. 31, 1899. There are two other possible marriages for a J. B. Cobb in Natchitoches; one on July 29, 1880 to a Mary Monasco who was said to have married 3 other gentlemen, one after the marriage to J. B.; and one more for a J. B. Cobb on June 24, 1881 to Mary Bruner. There is a Mary Jane Cobb buried near Joseph with the dates that have been given (10-14-1867 - 5-21-1950).
Other researchers have given Joseph a wife, Mary Jane Brumley who was said to be the mother of 5 of his children; Ella (8-5-1883), Enoch Brooks (2-28-1885), William Cleve (11-14-1886), Marshall E. (3-8-1890), and Rosa N.( about 1897). Mary Jane's death date has been given as May 21, 1950 so there would have had to have been a divorce, because of his marriage in 1899.
In 1910, the census records lists Joseph B. Cobb 61, widow with children William C., Marshall E,. Rosa N., and stepsons Adam C. Leonard and William B. Leonard. Joseph's sons, Enoch B. 22, and Charles H. 28, are living in the next two households with their wives and children. It is unclear what happened to the first son, William, but perhaps he died and that is why there is a second son William C.
Martha was probably Martha (MNUnsure, but probably Turner) who married first a Harrison before marrying a Leonard/Lenard. That is proven by a step daughter, Creasy Harrison, that is included in the 1900 household along with a stepson, Adam Leonard, Martha b. 1856, and 5 of Joseph's children, Eller, Eanoch B., William C., Marshall E. and Rosa M. (b. March 1896). A Martha Turner married a Henry Harrison on July 8, 1871, then a Martha Harrison married Bullard Leonard Aug. 14, 1890. Second fits, not sure about the first one.
On Joseph's children (dates and information from headstones & census records);
William (1869), Joseph (1871), Elisha (1873), found nothing further.
Andrew May 1876 married a widow Mattie J. Carrole b. Aug. 1873, lived in DeSoto Parish in 1900.
Charles H. (abt. 1882) married Janie L.about 1900
Ella (8-5-1883), must have married a Mr. Kay prior to 1918.
Enoch B. 2/28/1885 - 5/15/1970 married Lue Creasy (MNU) 3/22/1883 - 5/13/1982
info off WWI draft reg. was a logcutter, med. hght and build, brown eyes, black hair, emergency contact, sister, Mrs. Ella Kay.
William Cleve11/14/1886 - 7/6/1960 mar.Dellie Ellizabeth 4/20/1900 - 5/30/1973
Marshall E. (3-8-1890),
Rosa N. found a Rosie Cobb Scarbrough (3/6/1896 - 11/4/1966) buried Provencal Cem. Natchitoches Parish, beside husband Osie Oler Scarbrough. Birthdate fits.
William Daniel 9/9/1866,

Nancy Freedona 10/24/1888,
William Thomas 6/17/1892,

Dear Paul,
I have just joined this list and have been
watching the posts for about a week. I find
them very interesting as I have a granite
brick wall named Philena Cobb. She
married my 3 X G Grandfather, William
Whitteker, in Boston Sep 1806 at the
Second Baptist Church there (they were
not Baptist nor members of the church,
however). I have the diary of William
Whitteker which states that she was
a widow with two small children when
he married her. He said that he met her
at a boarding house where he was staying
off and on when in Boston. He was working
first, as a Carpenter's Mate on a Clipper
Ship and after 1800 up until 1808 as a
fur trader, traveling all around. Nowhere
is it ever mentioned what her maiden name
was, who her dead husband was, nor the
names or ages of the two children she
already had. She died in 1846, after they
had moved to Charleston, Kanawha, VA
(now WV) and lived there for 40 years...
too soon to appear in any Census which
might have given any info on her. She
did operate a tavern from their property
as she was called on the carpet in front
of the First Presbyterian Church of
Charleston for having a dancing party
there while her husband was away on
business. She blamed it on her son
(the Cobb son, still unamed, but of age
then in 1827) whom her husband
left in charge while he was away. There
are no church membership lists extant
in Charleston for the time period, although
the parents are known to have been
founding members. Also, any newspapers
of the year 1846 (for an obit) are missing.
I am still trying to locate an obit on Wm.
which appeared in an 1853 Wheeling
Newspaper (waiting on another film).
William Whitteker was born in Princeton,
Worcester, MA to William Whittaker (Rev
War Vet) and Lydia Howe in 1775. In one of
the History Books there, William's wife
is listed as "Lucy Cobb" rather than
Philena; but, this is the only place where
she is so named. No where in WV was
she ever called "Lucy" and I do not believe
that this is a nickname for "Philena". I am
stumped at finding her family and I wonder,
since you seem to be so knowledgeable
on the different Cobb lines, if you have
listed anywhere a Cobb son who might
have married a Philena and then died
between 1800 and 1805 (the year her
marriage contract with Wm. took place)
leaving two children, one of which would
definitely have been a son.
I have been looking at Lucy Jackson who
married a Benjamin Cobb, Jr. in Boston.
He was a distiller of spirits; but, she
would have had to be at least 15 yrs.
older than Wm. because she married
Benjamin in 1780. Just in case, I have
ordered a film which will show his will;
but, do not have it yet. I cannot ascertain
how many children Benjamin and Lucy
may have had either.
Any help, info, suggestions or anything,
really, would be greatly appreciated.

Sue & others,
To provide what helps answer this particular line, of a Lash & Cobb marriage
in NJ, here is my added response to the original reply to the posting.
Ms Shreve,
If, as this "tree" has an undocumented marriage abt 1752 and 12 children
afterward, then Elizabeth Cobb of the Barnstable line, born 10/27/1726, was
remarkably in two marriages and in two places, but unlikely correct.
Truro, MA Vital Records has 5 children by her marriage to Nathaniel Atkins:
Nathaniel Atkins (jr.) born 9/6/1750; Isaac Cobb Atkins (8/28/1752); John
Atkins (10/12/1754); David Atkins (10/1/1756) and Elizabeth Atkins
(6/29/1759), all in Truro.
If she had married secondly, it was after 1763, when Nathaniel Atkins died
in 1762 and there were no children recorded after 1759. She would have been
known as Elizabeth Atkins if a second marriage and not Elizabeth Cobb.
A marriage in 1763 (she then aged 37) gives a few years for children (less
than 5 - 8?), not abt 20 to 24 years with 12 children born (if separate or a
twin birth or two). Thus I find no good data that she had 12 children unless
counting her first five with Atkins. She could not have been married "bet
1752 and 1776" with Jacob Lash. She was already married in Truro in 1759
with her first husband. More children (but not seven) in a second marriage
is possible.
Could the Elizabeth Cobb have been the daughter of Henry Cobb and Jemima
Morse, having been born 8/15/1732 in Pomfret, CT? Since we have no marriage
data for her but the rest of the family ended up in South Carolina, she
could have separated from the family.
There is another Elizabeth Cobb as a candidate from a Plymouth, MA family as
there is no marriage info for her. She may have been born in NJ or elsewhere
and a different Elizabeth Cobb (maiden name or married name?)
Whoever did that tree certainly should provide more (if possible) to help
identify this Elizabeth Cobb since it has the wrong data for a wife of Jacob
Lash. If no other document can be forthcoming, then you need to find the
records in Newton, Sussex Co., NJ to learn more on this family.
Note: I found Nathaniel Atkins' death in 26 Nov 1762 in Truro, MA. His
gravestone has been photographed at the cemetery there
(www.capecodgravestones.com/truropixweb/atk62tr.html )
I found a page at
http://www.capecodhistory.us/genealogy/wellfleet/i524.htm#i7389 that has
this family but Elizabeth Cobb's death date should be on or after June 29,
1759 (birth of last child) and not before that date. Note it has an
alternate death date there in 1784 but no note or source. That page also has
a first husband before Nathaniel Atkins but I have not seen that marriage
before or where it came from (maybe her second marriage?) Will have to
check out that info came to be provided.
Note, there is no Jacob Lash marriage there nor could there be one before
1763/64, if it happened. The record has to be verified.
There has to be a different Elizabeth Cobb for a Jacob Lash marriage (if a
first marriage and 12 children followed).
Good hunting,

Sue:
Your marriage of Jacob Lash and Elizabeth Cobb (same parents) may have been
a second marriage. Two books ( "A History of The Cobb Family" [ by Philip L.
Cobb] and "History and Genealogy of the Cobb Family in New England" [Isaac
Cobb]) have her first marriage to Nathaniel Atkins on 5 Jan 1748/49 in
Truro, MA. Children from marriage from 1750 through 1759. I have no date
of death for either one.
Where have you found the record (or from what source) of the marriage to
Jacob Lash? There is no record of a Lash name or marriage in the Barnstable
line from what I have gathered.

Ancestry.com has several family trees for the COBB family that date back to
the very early 1400's.
Does anyone know of any DOCUMENTATION for this family?
Is there a book that might have been written about the COBB family ?
If so, who wrote it & when & is it available for purchase?
My husband's line goes back to -
Elizabeth COBB (b. 1726 Barnstable, MA & d. 1784 Barnstable, MA ). She
marr. Jacob LASH (1725 Prussia - 1790 Washington Co., PA). Her parents
were
James COBB (1698 Barnstable, MA - 1749 Barnstable, MA) & Hannah RICH (1707
Barnstable, MA - 1755 Barnstable, MA.
Any help will be very much appreciated in.

Hello Sue,
There's plenty on the net re. your line, but if in doubt I suggest you may
like to contact Hubert F. Cobb of Maine who is the most knowledgedable perdon
I know on the Barnstable Cobbs.
I believe the original emigrant for your line was HenryCobb of Stroud, Kent
born ca 1595 or so -DNA group testing of the male line proven, who married
Sarah Hinckley sister of the first Massachusets governer. If you see a
reference to Elder COBB -that's him.
ANOTHER line is from Ambrose COBB of the Plymouth Colony who arrived there
shortly before Elder Henry of Sciute Ms.
My line is also from Kent but back to the 1420s & even 1399 in Reculver &
Chislet just north of Canterbury in Kent.
I suggest looking for the DNA site run by Robert Stricklan & perhaps joining
in (at least the male family members ) which will proove 100% any
connections.
Meanwhile on the web there are some genealogies by people such as Mike COBB
- your line is HEAVILY featured.
Hope you have some luck in your search
Cheerio
Ronnie COBB in Witney, Oxfordshire ( a very very distant cousin)
Sue,
Your husband's line is one of the best known and researched of the Cobb
line. Go to any good public library in the northeast if that's where you folks
live, and they should have at least one book on that line. The State Capitol
libraries are usually very good.
Good Luck
