Is this document from AR or from Louisiana? I am not sure from the message. Also, is there any more information on who this William Cobb was? There is a William F Cobb, son of James Grisson Cobb that disappears - the rest of his family ends up in Arkansas, but not sure if this could be him. If his son George Washington Cobb was born in 1867, William F would have been a smidge young to have been his father. From my records, William F Cobb would have been born about 1852 in Webster County, Kentucky.

is there a date for this document?
John C. Cobb of New Jersey and Belleville, Illinois
I have identified the following John C. Cobb of Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois. I have a letter dated June 30, 1947 by him from Belleville, Ill. to an unidentified cousin. The letter was given to me by Genevieve Cobb, a double Cobb as her parents were second cousins. Genevieve was a librarian at Princeton University. Her father was John Nathan Cobb, Dean of Fisheries at the University of Washington, who married Harriet Bidwell. His father was Samuel Spencer Cobb, railroad engineer, who married [Catherine] Louise Richard from Belfort, France. His father was David Cobb, carpenter and iron monger at Oxford Furnace, N.J., who married Mary Hamilton. His father was Nathan Cobb, blacksmith in Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, etc. who married Mary Ann Walker.
This line is of the Taunton, MA blacksmith Cobbs from Corfe Castle, Dorset, England as proven by DNA testing in the Cobb DNA project (Strickland).
The first known ancestor of this line is:
Nathan Cobb
Blacksmith, iron forger, shipworks in Richmond, VA; Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA
B [Taunton, MA?]
D
M Mary Ann WALKER, Feb 26, 1795, St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA
Dau of John Walker from England
[Genevieve and her aunt Lillie May (Cobb) Walton had conflicting information unless, perhaps, Nathan Cobb and Mary Ann Walker were step-siblings. Genevieve said the following Davids father was a William Cobb. Scant church entries for St. Pauls makes this unlikely as did the following vanity local history article. Family notes indicate that Mary Ann Walker was the daughter of Mary Butler who married first John Walker from England and second William Cobb. In two subsequent generations there are two William Butler Cobbs.]
David Cobb
Carpenter and iron worker, Oxford Furnace, New Jersey
B June 4/5, 1809/10, Baltimore, MD
D Feb 19, 1883, Oxford Furnace, NJ
Bur Oxford Yard, Oxford, Warren Co., NJ
M Catharine Kitty Spencer
Dau of Samuel and Mary (Hamilton) Spencer.
Samuel Spencer, undocumented, was from Wilmington, New Castle Co., DE, a schooner owner and captain.
Mary Hamilton was the daughter of James Hamilton of PA but who might have been in Wilmington. He is said to have served in the Revolutionary War. Their children Kitty (Spencer) Cobb, Joshua Spencer (ca. 1807-ca 1858) and Angeline Spencer (1822-) can be found in Camden, NJ census and city directories. Angeline was crippled and lived with her brothers family. After a few census the family disappears.
B Jan 31, 1810, Camden, Camden Co., NJ
D Sep 1894, Scranton, Lackawanna Co., PA
Courtland F. Cobb
Probably named for uncle, Courtland Frederic Folwell who married Louisa DuComb Cobb
Nailer in a nail mill in Oxford, Warren Co., NJ and removes to Illinois
B [ca. 1851/2] PA

M 1) Annie E. Hiber
Dau of John and Elizabeth Hiber
D Nov 8, 1873, ae 31-4-28

In John C. Cobbs letter he writes: My family is scattered also. I have a married son in Kingman, Ariz. A married daughter in Houston, Texas, a married daughter here in Belleville, two children a boy and a girl be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, and a son that never came back from World War II.
Of the ancestors he wrote: Dear Cousin: Your letter of a long time ago received. In it you gave me the history of Grandmas side of the family back to James Hamilton of Pennsylvania who was born in 1737 and saw service in the Colonial and Revolutionary wars, for which I thank you so much. To the best of my memory Grandmother Cobbs maiden name was Spencer and her mothers maiden name was Hamilton.
In an entry for William B[utler] Cobb [brother of Courtland Cobb above] in Portrait and Biographical Record of Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. New York and Chicago: Chapman Publishing Co., 1897 it says on pp. 699-700:
The paternal grandfather of our subject was an iron forger and was employed in the ship works at Richmond and Philadelphia; he took part in the Revolution and three of his sons enlisted in the War of 1812. David Cobb, father of William B., was born in Taunton, Mass., [error he was born in Baltimore, MD], and at a very early age learned the carpenters trade, being the youngest builder in Camden, N.J. From the latter place he removed to Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pa., and in 1860 came to Scranton, securing work as a carpenter and machinist with the Lackawanna Iron & Coal Company. In 1865 he removed to Oxford, N.J., where he died in February, 1883, aged about sixty-seven years. During the Civil War he offered his services but was rejected.
The mother of our subject, Catherine [Spencer] was born in Delaware, and died in Scranton in 1892. Her father, Samuel Spencer, was born and reared in Wilmington, Del., where he made his permanent home, though being the owner of a schooner and captain in the coasting trade, much of his time was spent on the ocean. Both he and his wife were of French ancestry. [This is problematic as Spencer is an English name and Hamilton is Scottish.]
The article goes on to list David Cobbs children Mrs. William R. Call of Scranton; Samuel [Spencer], an engineer with the Delaware and Hudson RR [my line]; William B[utler] Cobb; Courtland of Belleville, Ill.; David [Spencer] of Pope County, Arkansas, and Elizabeth, widow of David Gayhart and resident of Mt. Pleasant, Henderson Co., Ill.
I have the children as Nathan b 1832; Muryam b 1834, David S. b 1836 to Pope Co., Arkansas; Louise/a b 1838 m. a Cottle and had Theodore; Elizabeth b 1840 and m. David Gayhart, resided in Illinois; Samuel Spencer b 1842 and married [Catherine] Louise Richard; Emma b 1844; William Butler b 1846, iron worker in Scranton, PA and Oxford, NJ and m Ellen Henderson; [?Portham b ca 1850 in the Paradise Twp, Monroe Co., PA census for 1860, male], Courtland F. b 1852, Nathan S. (1853-1873) buried in Jonestown Hillside Cemetery, Oxford, NJ; Spencer (1855-1873) buried in Jonestown Hillside Cemetery. Theodore Cottle resided with his grandfather David Cobb.

Death of Mrs. G.W. Cobb, of Mountain Rest
Keowee Courier, Dec. 12, 1928
Note: Mountain Rest is located in Oconee County, South Carolina
The death angel visited the home of G.W. Cobb, at Mountain Rest, November 30, and bore away the spirit of a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Cobb had suffered for several years with cancer. Her death was expected, but still it brought great sorrow to the family and friends. All of the children were at her bedside when she died, except one son, J.R. Cobb, of Eastman, Ga., who was very sick at that time. The deceased was 61 years old.
Before marriage Mrs. Cobb was Miss Rachel Woodall, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Woodall, of this county. While quite a young woman she and G.W. Cobb were married. To this union ten children were born - three deceased and seven living. Mrs. Cobb leaves beside her husband and seven children, seven grandchildren, four brothers, one sister and many friends to mourn her death.
Her children are: John R. Cobb, Eastman, Ga.; Easter, Amanda and Boone Cobb at home; Mrs. R.L. Stone, near home; Mrs. A.C. Cassidy, Anderson, S.C.; Lothia Cobb, Abbeville Hospital. Her brothers are P. and J. Woodall, Oconee County; E.W. and Jonah Woodall, of Greenville, and her sister, Mrs. Howell Carter, Battle Creek, S.C.
Mrs. Cobb will be greatly missed in her home and community. She was loved by all who knew her, for she was always ready to lend a helping hand to the sick and needy.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Clifton Cobb Sunday, Dec. 2, at Mountain Grove Church. The family and relatives have the sympathy of many in their sorrow.
