I am trying to identify my 3XG Grandomother, Philena
Cobb, who married William Whitteker in Boston, MA in
1806 and then moved to the Charleston WV area where
she died in 1846.
When William married her she was a "poor widow with
2 small children" according to his diary. I do not even have
the names of the children. I do know that one was a boy
because years later, when his mother was called in front
of the Presbyterian church for having a dancing party at
her house while her husband was out of town, he took the
blame, although his name was not mentioned. It stated
that "he was in charge of the house while his step father
was away and had the party against his mother's wishes".
In one other source, "The History of Princeton, MA"
she is named as "Lucy Cobb"; but, this is the only source
that names her thus. Everywhere else she is named
"Philena Cobb"; and, infact the daughter that she had with
William was named Philena V. Whitteker.
I have tried every which way to find her maiden name; but
to no avail. If you should recognise her as part of your
Cobb family tree, having been married to a male Cobb
ancestor from the Massachusetts area, please contact me.
Thanks for any help,
Dee
I have no proof for this but it makes sense that Laura and Eudocia may be
sisters. Laura Cobb named a daughter, Eudocia. Have you checked the Prices in
Census records? I have not.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone know the relationship, if any, between these two women?
Both are buried with their husbands at Vernon AL City Cemetery, at least
according to a 1962 survey of the cemetery. The Morton graves cannot be found
today. The surveyor recorded Roland Wallace Cobb's wife as "Laura Chappell (Price)
Cobb." In other papers, the same individual listed William Locke Morton's
wife as Eudocia Jane Price.
The 1870 Sanford County AL census records a Laurie Price, of the right age to
be Laura Chappell (Price) Cobb, living in the household of Dr. W. L. &
Eudocia J. Morton. The marriage records list the marriage in Lamar (Sanford) County,
12/24/1874, of Laura E. Price and Roland W. Cobb.
Were the two women sisters, or perhaps cousins, or aunt and niece? Does any
know their parents?

Jackson and Prince Family Papers, 1784-1880,
Baker, Bibb, and Clarke Counties, Georgia;
also Alabama and Virginia
In 1819 Henry Jackson married Martha Jacquelin Rootes Cobb, the widow of Captain Howell Cobb (1772-1818). Martha was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1776, the daughter of
Thomas Reade and Sarah Ryng Battaile Rootes. Before she married in 1810, she lived with her family in Fredericksburg. She then moved with her husband first to Washington, D.C., then in 1812 to his plantation outside Louisville, Georgia. One year after Cobb's death she married Henry Jackson and moved with him to Athens, then later to his Halscot Plantation, where she lived until around 1850 or 1851. She died in 1853. (more on website)
I am not related to this family, just passing on this information, which comes from a website called "Records of Ante-Bellum Southern Plantations" The link for the site is listed below.

In the VA records you sometime find the name spelled "Driskee," but that must
be a way someone pronounced it. Alexander died before she did and she appears
on a census alone. I would have to look them up to get it right, but there
was at least one man descended from them as I remember him writing me. I will
see abt that too, if you like?
All of this should be on the COBB/COBBS site.
Carleen
I wondered if this pair was related to the earlier VA Cobbs and Driskills who
married? Susannah Cobbs [d/o Thomas and Mary] m Alexander Driskill in 1785,
Campbell Co. VA. Her brother was named Jesse and the name is used in this line
of COBBS.
It is a coincidence?
I am descended from another of Thomas and Mary's sons.
Carleen
It looks like a Caleb Arnold of RI applied for a Revolutionary War pension.
If this was the Caleb you are looking for he was a bit older then Elizabeth
but could very well be the right one.

Hello,
It was misleading for you to send an email to the COBB-L(a)rootsweb.com with the subject line of 'From List Adminstrator' and with the opening line of 'Just doing some routine house cleaning this time'.
You've confused listmembers...I've had a flood of sub requests from folks who are already on the list. I assume you either left out the DNA from the address and didn't mean to send the message to the regular COBB mailing list, or neglected to put DNA in the subject line.
Either way, please post a correction/clarification so the other listmembers will know you are not claiming to be the list administrator of the COBB mailing list.
Thanks,
