I did not have the name of Gideon Dyer Cobb's wife whom you list as Modena Chittenden Clark or the son Caleb Clark Cobb. There are some other children listed in my information as follows: Livingston Cobb, Joshua Cobb, Gideon Dyer, Anelia Cobb.
Gideon Dyer Cobb b. 1773 wa the son of Elkanah and Polly (Willard) Cobb. Siblings of Gideon Dyer Cobb were: Joshua Sarah, Willard Elkanah, John, James Duncan, Mary and Sophia.
Elkanah was the son of Gideon and Abigail (Dyer) Cobb. This Gideon was the first to move to VT from Stonington, CT with Elkanah. Elkanah went to Pawlet, VT in 1770. After marriage, he then removed, first to New York State then back to Pawlet, VT, then to Poultney, VT. The family or a part of them removed from Poultney, VT to Kentucky, probably after his decease.

Gideon Dyer Cobb was b. Stillwater NY 1773, and moved with his parents to Pawlet VT by 1790. He married Modena Chittenden Clark, granddaughter of Gov. Thomas Chittenden of VT and daughter of Gen. Isaac Clark, there in 1796. They had one son, Caleb Clark Cobb in VT, then moved with Matthew Lyon's party to Eddyville in 1801. There they had a number of other children, including Gideon Dyer.
Gideon Berry Cobb appears in the household of Caleb Clark Cobb at age 4 in 1850. Caleb's 1st wife died in 1835, so she's not the mother of young Gideon. I've not found any evidence that Caleb married again until he married Lousia Long in 1853. (No marriage record, and no females in the 1840 census.) But Louisa is in Caleb's household in 1850, along with Sarah Long, who appears to be her mother or mother-in-law. It looks like Louisa was a housekeeper or the like.
My theory is that young Gideon is a grandson of Caleb by a son not yet identified, but that could be wrong.

I noted your interest in Gideon B. Cobb from KY. There was a Gideon D. Cobb that moved to Eddyville, KY, probably from NY. He is from the Elder Henry Cobb line. It looks like he may have had a son b. about 1819 in KY, also Gideon D. Cobb. There may have been siblings of Gideon who also went to KY. Gideon's father was from VT. If you think there might be a connection I have a bit more information.

I dont think you and I are related. but if you happen to locate the
orgin of the given middle name of "Berry" I'd sure appreciate it if you'd post it.
That name was used as either a first given name or a middle name in several
generations of my family and I've never been able to figure out where it came
from.

In your family of Edward Cobb, is there a Hartwell E. H. Cobb (or a similar
family name)?
Hartwell is in the 1820 and 1830 Census for Richland County SC and I think
he may have gone there from NC.
In 1830 he was in the 50-60 age range; in the household was another male in
the 90-year range. Also in the same county in 1820 was Mary Cobb, age 45 and
over.
Thrown into the mix is an Edward Cobb (my ancestor) in the 1840 census
(Hartwell E. H. and Mary has disappeared by that census year.)
I'm trying to tie these folks to NC but need a small piece of the puzzle to
fall into place before I can do so.
Thank you for any help,
Glenna

I double checked Gideon Berry's age on the 1860 census, and I had it wrong. It's actually 12, which works much better.

Dear Penny Richardson,
My grandfather was Frank Moulton Cobb, born in Kentucky and was truly the son of Gideon Berry Cobb who was born in Kentucky.
The marriage certificate of Frank Moulton Cobb lists father as
Gideon Berry Cobb and Sarah M. McElevey. This marriage
took place in 1906, and Frank was 24 years old. So he was
born in 1882. My sister was Jackie Haley, who has died, and
now I am doing the research. I would appreciate any info. I believe Gideon Berry Cobb was born perhaps later than 1824
perhaps more like early 1840's
Is this of any help? My family goes to Edward Cobb, born 1727in Isle of
Wight County, VA died at Edgecombe County, NC Married to Mary Mayo
He is son of William Cobb born 1695 Isle of Wight and died 1769 in Isle of
Wight, married to Ann Bryant This continues back further and I can send that
to you if you are interested.

Thanks so much. I haven't really figured out how to search for ancestors yet and don't have a whole lot to go on!
My mother was b. Sarah Cobb Godwin in Baltimore, MD 1915. Her father was
Garn Thomas Godwin b in Morristown, TN (1892-1984) d. in Balto. Co.,
Maryland . His mother was Sarah Cobb Murray b in Grainger Co., TN
(1871-1942) d. in Knoxville, TN. Her father was William Thomas Murray b.
and d. in Grainger Co., TN (1839-1919). His mother was Sarah Cobb b. & d.
in Grainger Co., TN (1805-1883) dau. of Joseph Cobb.
Joseph Cobb. b. in NC 1769-d. in middle TN 1857 was the son of William Cobb
Jr. or 2nd (b. 1746) and Martha Boon. They were in Bertie or Northampton
Co. for years before moving to TN. Wm. died trying (1796) and is buried in
Abingdon, VA. His family went on into TN, living in what became Grainger
Co. in 1796. Joseph Cobb was a surveyor for the county and later for other
parts of the state. He was also a farmer. His grandfather was William Cobb
the 1st or Sr.(1723-1803) who lived in Rocky Mount, which was used as the
1st capitol of the territory S. of the Ohio, and is now a state museum. He
was a Justice of the Peace of the territory.
The line goes back thru Benjamin (1702/05-1793), Joseph (1670/80-1752)
Pharoah (1635-1701) Joseph (1588-1653) and Richard Cobb of Aberdeen Scotland
and Holland m. to Sybil Sheetz of Holland 1500's. It is said that they had
16 children, but I've never been able to trace any of them. If anyone knows
how, please clue me in. This Richard Cobb is definitely not the one who
lived in England.

Julie,
In the 1920 census I found Ellis in Rapides Parish as follows:
Ellis J. Cobb 34 Sawyer in saw mill
Willie, wife 26
Tyrus, son 5
Edna, daughter 2
There's a Louisiana death record that has the following:
Ellis J. Cobb, b. 1886, d. 23 Dec. 1940, age at death, 54.
There were a few other references to him but nothing to report.
This is not my line.
Hope this helps,
Bill

I have recently started searching my ancestors. I have limited information on my family, growing up, my family was very small. The Cobb Family that is related to me comes from Rapides Parish ( Glenmora, LA)
I have my greatgrandfathers name: Ellis James Cobb, I believe he was born in or around 1889 and he had a twin sister ? named Edna. He married Billie Dee Cobb, I am not sure of her maiden name, I know she was from Winnfield, LA.
Ellis James had a son named Tyrus Ellis Cobb born 09/13/1912 and died 05/1942 in Marksville, La. Tyrus married Adelia Bordelon from Marksville, LA. She was born 01/11/1913 and died 10/23/1985.
I am not sure if the twin sister is the sister of Ellis James or Tyrus Ellis.
Any information would greatly be appreciated. My father has recently passed away and I have one uncle named Tyrus Ellis Cobb Jr. He is still living, but he doesn't have much information to pass on.
Thanks
Julie
