I have a Jacob Cobb, son of Samuel T. Cobb. Here again, I wonder if this

This is very interesting, because I wouldn't be surprised if my Samuel T.
Cobb was a brother to your James Cobb's father. My Samuel T. Cobb, b. 11 Jun
1801, had a son named James. I have been looking for the longest time for the
parents of Samuel who settled in the Monroe and Clarke Co., area, which are the
next counties just north of Baldwin Co., AL. My Samuel was born in NC, but
made his way to AL by 1824. Many of my ancestors passed through GA for a few
years before getting to AL.
Please let me know if you discover the parents of your James.

Well, for what it’s worth, maybe I can offer a clue for someone. Reuben Cobbs, Norvell’s brother, was dead by 1870. At that time, his wife Elizabeth and son Roderick were living in the household of one Elizabeth White, age 56, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They were still in Lancaster in 1880.
Roderick Prevost Cobb became an Episcopalian clergyman, and pastored churches in several states. In 1900, he was in Rensselaer Co, NY. In 1910, he was in Delaware Co, PA. Sometime before 1920, he moved to Orange Co, FL, and was still there in 1930.
About 1888, Roderick married Annie S. They apparently had only one child to survive, a son Randolph Howell Cobb, born 14 July 1894 in Union Co, NJ. Randolph married Martha Elizabeth Trotter on 19 March 1923 in Volusia Co, FL. This marriage ended in divorce. In 1930, Randolph was practicing law living in Camden, NJ. He eventually returned to Florida, and died at Orlando in October 1966.

Mike, most of this was provided to me by a fellow researcher who has been researching and recording Buckingham Co., VA records for many years. William Cobbs married Sarah "Sallie" Puryear, daughter of Reuben and Nancy "Nannie" Puryear. William Cobbs was born about 1787, and he died in 1850. Sallie was born about 1790 and she died in 1853 in Buckingham County, VA. William and Sallie had Reuben Cobbs, Dr. John Cobbs (a dentist), Norvell P. Cobbs and Mariah Cobbs.
The 1850 Buckingham Co., VA census shows Sallie Cobbs (widow), Reuben Cobbs and Dr. John Cobbs living in the household of Norvell P. Cobbs. Also living there was an aunt named Mary Puryear and a Irvina Cobbs (I don't know who she was) Reuben Cobbs married Elizabeth P. Howell, daughter of Amos Howell and Sarah LNU. Norvell Cobbs married Emma LNU.
I don't know that I can prove it at this point (other than perhaps by the process of elimination), but various researchers show that William Cobbs was one of 11 children of Thomas and Nancy (Watson) Cobbs. I show Nancy Watson as the daughter of William Watson and Martha Pleasants. As I recall, you stated once before that DNA testing has now shown that this Thomas Cobbs was, in fact, a descendant of Ambrose Cobbs, "The Immigrant." I assume, however, that there is still no evidence to show who the father of this Thomas Cobbs was (correct)?
Per a couple of researchers, one of the children of Thomas and Nancy (Watson) Cobbs was Augustus Cobbs (and he had a son named Pleasant Augustus Cobbs). Another child of Thomas and Nancy (Watson) Cobbs was James Cobbs. One of the grandchildren of Baker W. and Ann(e) Hamner (Cobbs) Davidson was named James Augustus Cobbs, and I would not be surprised if that given name was not a coincidence. One of their other grandchildren had "Cobbs" for a middle name, so the use of names from the Cobbs family was obviously a normal occurance for this family. I don't think that Anne had an "Augustus" in her immediate family, so MAYBE the use of the name Augustus implies some fairly close relationship between Anne's family (she was out of the Bedford County, VA Cobbs) and the family of the above Thomas Cobbs. If both families were, in fact, descendants of "The Immigrant," and since both families were living in Buckingham County (by about 1830 for Baker W. Davidson), then it would make s!
ense that both families were probably "well aquainted." Thomas and Nancy (Watson) Cobbs also had a son named John L. Cobbs, and that was the same name and initial as the father of Anne (John Lewis Cobbs; he married Susannah Hamner).

Jesse Cobb was on the 1782 tax/tithe list in Cumberland County, VA. Norvell was an officer in the War Between the States (born about 1824) and was a hotel keeper in Buckingham County, VA in 1851. Norvell's father was William Cobbs and his mother was a Puryear. Does anyone have any info on these two men? Were either men descendants of Ambrose Cobbs, "The Imigrant"? The Jesse Cobb(s) who was the great-grandson of Thomas Cobb(s) and Mary Shields appears to have been born much too late (1778) to have been on a tax/tithe list in 1782. Thanks!

Do you have any idea if Mr. Cobbs was related in some way to the Norvell family that was in the Buckingham/Cumberland County, VA area? Thomas Henry Norvell married Sallie Virginia Davidson on 29 Mar 1870. Sallie was the daughter of my 2nd ggf, Joseph Cornelius Davidson and his wife Vitula Monroe (Sandrige) Davidson. Joseph C. Davidson moved from Cumberland County, VA to Buckingham County, VA around 1859.
There was also a Baker W. Davidson (born about 1800 in Botetourt Co., VA; died in 1869 in Buckingham Co., VA) in Buckingham Co., VA by around 1830. Court records show that he was responsible for the burial of a man named Irving Norvell there. I have traced the family of Baker W. Davidson, and I found that his grandfather (and various other relatives) had been in Buckingham Co. back in the 1760s (his grandfather moved to Botetourt Co., VA by about 1774). I have not determined if Baker W. and Joseph C. Davidson were related or if these were two totally separate Davidson families. Baker W. Davidson married Ann(e) Hamner Cobbs in Bedford Co., VA in January 1827. Ann(e) was the daughter of John L. and Susannah (Hamner) Cobbs.

Do either of you have a record of a Sally Cobb? She married Thomas Paine, not the famous one.

This is my family. Henry was my gggrandfather, and I knew Isaac (my great-grandfather). I have met and know members of the families of Richard, Rebecca, Mary, and James (siblings or half-siblings of Isaac). Wylie never married.
I know all these siblings submitted affidavits (and have copies of the affidavits) to the Guion Williams Indian Commission in 1907 attempting to establish their Indian (Cherokee) heritage, but these applications were denied. If there is Indian "blood"in the family, I am almost certain that it must have been through a Cobb wife (Henry's mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother ?) rather than through the Cobb line - but "sure" knowledge of what I know about my ancestral line ends with Henry.
I would be very happy if you contacted me (e-mail address cobb(a)grandecom.net).
Otis,
This sounds very much like one of the lines from my Samuel Cobb of
Orange County, Indiana and I would very much appreciate any information
you have to share!!
