Perhaps what you should do is set about proving your husband's line. Think of using a third or fourth cousin of your husband (male, of course, with the Cobb surname) to take the DNA test. If the two of you match, as you should unless there was a "non-paternity event--an adoption or foster child/stepson who assumed the Cobb name or some such, two such close cousins will typically match almost perfectly. In that case, you have proven the DNA pattern/haplotype of your most recent common ancestor. The trick is to work to find these collateral line descendants and siblings so that you can work your way back with a family DNA haplotype. That way, when you do turn up a match to a heretofore unknown kinsman, you will have material to work with.

I don't have any information about Doak, and I did not see him in any of the census in 1860, 1870, or 1880. My husband, Samuel D. Cobb submitted a DNA sample a couple years back and so far has not been connected to any of the Cobb families anywhere. Pretty disappointing.

My GGfather was Howard Fletcher Cobb. He was the son of Rufus Cobb. Rufus was listed in the 1870 census in Itawamba Co., Miss. as 44 years old. Census said he was born in NC. His first wife must have died between 1865 and 1867 because he married Terissa Walden in 1867. Howard Flether and his 2 brothers and a sister moved to SW Ark in 1880. I found Rufus Cobb in Tishomingo Co, Miss 1880 Census. Could his be the same Rufus Cobb mentioned in your query?

FYI:
Found this old book on ebay called “Historical Southern Families”
They have a full index including those of the Cobb’s on the page below.
You would be amazed what your allied families find on your direct lines that you don't. I know they have helped me alot.
It is not my book so I can't answer questions you would need to email the seller from the page. They also have more old family histories in their store.

Or you can go to ebay and do a search for item number 5645173054
Hope it helps,
