Descendants of this James H. were living in Baldwin co, AL in 1920 and
some of the older ones were there in 1930. Have you looked at records in
this county that could provide a clue?
If these folks were there in 1920 and 1930, seems like maybe some are
still there or can be found?
Go to www.switchboard.com and key in Loxley, AL and the surname Cobb and
you'll find 3 people. A Bruce D. and a Terry A. and a Mary S. Maybe
these numbers still work, maybe they are descendants and can help?

I am giving up on this one. Priscilla Cobb ran away with a married man,
Abijah Lewis Sowell, in 1880.(Baldwin Co. AL.) There is no marriage license
to be found; although, family insists they were married in 1880. First
wife, Laura Sowell got a divorce in 1884 in AL.
Priscilla Cobb was do James H. Cobb b. 1820 GA. and Elizabeth Ray/Rae b. AL.
1833. They were m. 1850 Escambia Co. FL. (Pensacola) & were in Baldwin Co.
AL. in 1860 & 1870.
Priscilla Cobb Sowell never saw her family again. She moved to that part of
Jackson Co. that became Washington Co. FL. and had 5 children.
I have tried the obvious; and, no access or hope of finding a male relative
for DNA. The only possibility came in 1997, when I first went on-line;
and, got an e-mail about a missing elder son named James H. Cobb in GA; lost
this in a crash.
Regards and much envy to those who have connected,

Anne,
I don't know about the link thing. I just loaded up the photo on my FTP
space on AOL. I would have thought that any browser could get to it.
I really think that fellow is Robert Cobb of Oconee Co., SC.
That is one of those lessons learned regarding photos for me. The lesson:
make sure we get all photos identified in some fashion before they pass on to
the next generation.
I thought it interesting too that someone colored the tintype. It is the
largest tintype I've ever seen.
I hope eventually someone will dig through a dusty old trunk and help ID this
fellow.
Take Care.

Ref. the question I raised regarding the possible photo of Robert Cobb of Oconee Co., SC, and the URL I listed at:
http://members.aol.com/dale30809/isthisacobb
some folks have said they had problems with the link not working on Netscape and on MAC computers. Then, one person advised the photo could be accessed via Internet Explorer. AOL uses IE so I guess that would make sense. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks to all of those who have viewed the photo and responded.
Apparently the link works with Microsoft's browser Explorer but not (on
a Mac) with Netscape or Mac's Safari.
Interesting restriction. I'm curious what format you used that
resulted in that exclusive result--not implying any fault on your part,
Dale.
The picture doesn't look so much like my Muscogee/Chattahoochee Cobbs,
but does favor the Athens, GA, Howell Cobb bunch, somewhat. See
http://www.generalsandbrevets.com/ sgc/cobbh.htm for example, or here
http://www.civilwar.si.edu/.../ cobb_davignon.jpg You can also Google
Image for Thomas RR Cobb, but there only seem to be a couple of images
of him on line, one lean in fighting form (CS) and one older looking
much more like Howell.
The curve of the eyebrows is not the same as in your possible Cobb, and
the Athens Cobbs seem to pose with downturned mouth. Don't know if
that is a pose or a natural line.
This is a South Carolina branch Cobb too: John Humphrey Cobb
www.angelfire.com/ga2/PhillipsLegion/ cobb.html
The beard unfortunately obscures the mouth line and chin.
He looks like a number of the Chattahoochee/Muscogee area Cobbs.
Enough so to be a brother.
That DNA sure comes through, even in photos! Now if we could only find
enough photos of UK and German Cobb men from about the same time
period, we might start a new trend in genealogy.

I am trying to identify a large tintype photo which I recently received from the estate of Mattie Cobb Watson a daughter of John Henry Cobb and Lula Hammett. John Henry Cobb was a son of Robert Cobb and Nancy Long of Oconee Co., SC. The unidentified photo can be viewed at the following URL: http://members.aol.com/dale30809/isthisacobb If anyone can identify this photo I would be grateful. It hung on Mattie's wall for years but it was not identified before she died. I suppose it is possible the person is a Hammett, but the subject appears to be holding a bible and Robert Cobb was a preacher. Please send any response to my e-mail address as I do not get to this site often. Thanks for any info.
Patti,
Saw your responce on the COBB-MAIL list to Mike. I too have found him
'testy' at times. But he is just 'professional' in his info-giving of COBB info.

Will get back to you later...

Gail,
I have not folowed all of the messages concerning George W. Cobb, but I do have some information as to his wife. She is listed on the Oconee County, SC census for 1880 in the Pulaski township in the home of her parents, John J. and Salie (Jones) Woodall. She is listed as Rachel age 13. On the 1900 census for Oconee County, SC she is still in the Pulaski township in the home of her husband, George W. Cobb. Her name is listed as Mary R. age 33. With this information, I have her listed in my records as Mary Rachel.
I hope this is of some help to you.
