I am interested in your Mathews/Cobb family of Wilkinson Co. Ga. My ancestor was Sarah Ann Mathews (or Mathis) who married Alexander Shores in Wilkinson Co. Ga. 24 Aug 1843. I believe that Sarah Ann's father was Elijah Mathews (sometimes spelled Mathis) who was living next door to her on the 1850 census of Wilkinson Co. I believe that Elijah's wife ( Sarah Ann's mother) might have been Mary Cobb. ( re. marriage in Baldwin Co., Ga. 1812 of Elijah Mathews and Mary Cobb)
Another interesting point is that Sarah Ann and Alexander Shores named a son Levi. PLease contact me.

I would like to talk to any researchers of a David Cobb who bought land in Sampson Co from Joel Wilson of Dickson Co, TN. in 1832.
The land was transferred by Power of Atty given in Dickson, TN and had been inherited by Joel from his brother Shadrach Wilson of Sampson Co.
I believe Joel's wife Milly or Milla may have been a Cobb and perhaps his mother Sarah may also have been a Cobb also.
The Wilsons were in Northampton, Bertie/Hertford and then Halifax/Edgecombe NC before moving to Sampson Co.

Ms. Archer,
I am aware of a Nancy Cobb from around Kokomo, Indiana, who married Henry Fauchier, a Civil War veteran. This Nancy had been previously married to someone else. However, I cannot remember her earlier married name.
The Nancy Cobb of whom I am aware, moved to Kansas with her husband in the 1870s or so.
If information about this Nancy Cobb is interesting, please let me know, and I will dig into my notes to get you better information.

Does anyone know the relationship that is mentioned (see item below) "What makes the deed appear still more inhuman is the fact that one of the murderers - Collins - is nearly related to Mr. Cobb.". How is Collins nearly related?
Information taken from the Mason County Museum/Library on 11 Feb 2004
Mason County KY July Term 1861 3rd day 24 Jul 1861 Pg 347
Whereas it has been made to appear to the court by the representatives of many good citizens of the county that the safekeeping of Charles Collins, a prisoner in the jail of Mason County on a charge of murder, requires that a guard shall be kept over him, that there is a vicious apenblage of persons around the jail and that there is danger of said jail being broken open, and of the said prisoner being taken out and illegally and violently dealt with it is hereby ordered that a guard shall be summoned by the sheriff of Mason County to guard said prisoner, and said jail, the guard shall be composed of Twenty five persons and the same shall be under the control of William W. Baldwin, Sheriff of Mason County and Robert H. Baldwin his deputy and they shall use all necessary and legal efforts to disperse said vicious apunblage and protect said jail and safely keep said prisoner. July 24, 1861.

"The Cobb Murders"
Murder of a Family in Maysville, Ky.
One of the most atrocious murders we have ever been called upon to record occurred at a farm house on the Maysville and Orangeburg road, two miles from Maysville, In Mason County, Ky on the 24 inst. The victims were an odd man named Cobb and his two sons - one aged 16, he other about 21 years. Two men, named Charles Collins and ___ Moore, entered Mr. Cobb's house and seizing an ax, entered the room in which the young men slept, and deliberately butchered them. They then entered the bedroom occupied by Mr. And Mrs. Cobb. With a couple of heavily dealt blows upon the head they dispatched Mr. Cobb. They also struck his wife once or twice, and evidently thought they had killed her. - Though very severely wounded, she is likely to recover. Having completed their horrible work of blood, they proceeded to search the house for money, and finding about $200 in a bureau drawer, departed with it.
The object of the murder was booty, as one rullians understood that Mr. Cobb had a large amount of money in his possession at the time. What makes the deed appear still more inhuman is the fact that one of the murderers - Collins - is nearly related to Mr. Cobb.

Message Board Post:
It is known that the county records for York County, Virginia are incomplete due to flood and the other ravages of time. Therefore modern researchers are somewhat handicapped and forced to resort to "supplemental" records, re: Tax Lists in lieu of census reports. Thus, due to the absence of definitive documentation (which can prove something positively), it is particularly "risky" to rely on heresay and oral tradition.
Like many people, I myself for many years, believed that the wife of Ambrose Cobbs (son of Robert Cobbs and Elizabeth Thorp) was Frances Elizabeth Pinkett. Such is indicated in the book, "The Cobbs of Tennessee" (Cully A. Cobb, 1968). However, new evidence has been discovered in the remaining York County records.
Below is one reason why many people have believed that the wife of Ambrose Cobbs (son of Robert Cobbs and Elizabeth Thorp) was the daughter of Thomas Pinkett. It is one of the rare instances of incomplete work done by the genealogist employed by Cully A. Cobb, published in his 1968 book, "The Cobbs of Tennessee".
Quoting a transcription of records from the book --- York County, Virginia: "Bk. 14, p. 479: Court Action filed on 21 Feb. 17l5. Record of a debt between Ambrose Cobbs and Frances Cobbs, his wife, daughter of Thomas Pinkett, deceased, of the one part and William Finnagan of the other part. On p,. 489: Court of 29 March 17l5 is recorded the final disposal. Finnagan ordered by the court to pay 3.0.3 and costs."
It is that bit of information in the court book which was misread by someone and the basis on which Ambrose Cobbs is supposed to have married the daughter of Thomas Pinkett. Ambrose' wife's name was Elizabeth and this woman's name was Frances.
Now quoting directly from York County records a few pages later --- York Co., VA, Book 14, p 489 "In the action of Debt between Ambrose Cobbs plaintiff and William Finnagan and Frances his wife administrator of Thomas Pinkett decd. defendant, for 24 ? pounds of Tobacco by bill the Deft. having made oath that the decd's estate hath no credit for any of that Specie. It is therefore considered that the plt. recover against the decd's Estate in the deft. hands the Sum of three pounds and three pence with costs."
Evidently this Frances Finnagan was the widow of Thomas Pinkett and married Wm. Finnegan after Thomas Pinkett's death.
On the other page listed in the Cully Cobb book, p 479, the court book reads, "The Action of Debt between Ambrose Cobbs plt and William Finnagan and Frances his wife adm deft is continued until next court by consent." On the same page are other cases of debt against William Finnagan and Frances his wife adm of Thomas Pinkett, decd. There is no question that the Frances in these documents was Frances Finnagan.
Unless the researcher found some some other proof and chose to not list it in Cully's book, nobody knows who Ambrose Cobbs married. We do know her name was Elizabeth, as Ambrose named her co-executor of his 1718 Will.
By the way, in 1711, Thomas Pinkett and Frances his wife were arrested on suspicion of having stolen some goods from John Curtis and his wife. Thomas claimed he had proof that the things were his own but the couple was to be kept in the sheriff's custody until Thomas could arrange for good security. Nothing else is found on the subject so it is supposed they were able to prove their innocence. Anyway, the incident proves that Thomas Pinkett's wife in 1711 was named Frances.
There is no mention of the name Ford(e) or Tibbet in any of these proceedings, nor are they listed in either the 1790 or 1800 Tax Lists for York County. In "Virginia Wills & Administrations 1632-1800" compiled by Clayton Torrence in 1930, there is one mention of the estate inventory of a Charles Ford in York County, in 1658.
