If the unknown Norvell was living next door to her sister in 1920, then
doesn't it give her given name in the census? How old was she in 1920?
where was she born? where did you find her in 1910? If you know her
given name can't you back up and find her in previous census records? I
have access to all the census records and can help if you will give me a
few more clues.

I am trying to find out which Matthew Cobb married an (Unknown 1st name) Norvell. On the 1920 census she is living next door to her sister, Sarah Norvell Larkam in Clay Twp., Holt Co., Missouri. By the time of the 1920 census Mr Cobb (Matthew) must have been dead, as Mrs Cobb is listed as a widow. I am not sure which Matthew Cobb this is, or if this is a 2nd marriage for him, or if they may have children. If someone can help me out please let me know. Thank! -Elise, MN.
To: William Cobb. There is not much on Scottish records before 1600, but
an online friend from Edinburgh did tell me where to find a Malcolm as the
earliest COBB entry (in a History of Scottish Surnames). The place Malcolm
was from was Ardoch, 1508. It then jumps to 1600 onward in Brechin, 30
miles south of Aberdeen, and Ardoch is about another 30 miles away near
Cupar Angus. Brechin is called the land of the Lindsays, which Cobb is a
sept of. In 1528 there was a record of a place named Cobbisland in Brechin.
In Scottishdocuments.com the name Alexander Cobb was shown several times.
(1819-1859). He was a shipmaster in Montrose in 1845. Anyone can check the
site out.
I'm torn between stories written about our Richard being a soldier. I don't
think he was, since he has been confused with the English Officer Richard
Cobb, and a completely different set of children, all born in England. I'm
sure our family were already Quakers when they got to Virginia. The whole
area around Pagan Creek was wall to wall Quakers.
As far as Wm. Cobb Sr. of Rocky Mount having more children with Sally (last
name unk) he was already 74 when she carried Wm. Pharoah, b. 1798, so I
don't think so.
To Tennessee Silver. I don't believe there was ever a mention in history
of Elizabeth Flinton's middle name of Mary. "If" she was born in 1598 in
Virginia she would have been Indian, since White men didn't come until 1607,
without women. Also "if" she was born at that time, she may have been the
2nd wife of Joseph. Either that or dates are wrong for births of first
sons.
I wonder where the marriage of the first son Joseph Cobb was found, married
to Sarah Smith? The only union by those names I have ever found were my own
ancestors, who married in TN 1797, Grainger County. Some researchers say
that Elizabeth Cobb (b. 1626) was really the daughter of Joseph Cobb Jr, but
there could have been one for each set of parents I suppose.
I have read that Dr. Farrar Flinton was the father or brother of Elizabeth,
wife of the first Joseph Cobb. That was supposed to be where the name
Pharoah came from, because it was pronounced "Farrah" in the south and still
is. Since nobody knew just how to spell the name they looked it up in the
bible and took Pharoah. This is what I have always been told by Cobb
descendants in the south.
It was quite common for people with names beginning with Mc or MacMullin to
drop them, the same way with the Irish O'.

Hi, I noticed that you have a lot of Canadian Cobbs. Did any of your ancestors come from Prince Edward Island. My Cobbs came from England in the 1830's . They settled in PEI, then eventually in other parts of Canada and MA. Thanks, Patti
Does anyone know where to find William Reid Cobb, born in 1942, a grad. of
the Univ. of TN. His father was Pharoah Lee Cobb, Jr. b. 1911, also a grad.
of the U of TN. His line is from Wm. Sr. of Rocky Mount, thru his son
Pharoah.
I searched The Real White Pages for TN for a William R. and William Reid
Cobb and didn't find any. There are many plain William Cobb names, but too
many.
Joanne
Shiela, My Wm. Cobb Jr. was not German, but from a long line of Cobbs from
Great Britain, probably Scotland, but living in Amsterdam, Holland before
Joseph came to Jamestown the first time in 1613. I think his father
Richard came from Scotland. I found evidence that Joseph sent 2 sons to
Edinburgh for their education. If he was English, they would have gone to
an English school I would think.
Gay, I will search my records to see if I can find where the Cobbs and
Mullins fit. I don't think I know Bob Manning. Etheldred Cobb's date of
birth would have been between 1767 and 1775 most likely.
There was definitely a will for Pharoah Cobb of Cobb's Ford. he lived to be
90 and died in 1841. His children were Catherine, Richard C., William,
Arthur, Barsheba and Jesse b. 1799.
By the way, has anyone else done their math and seen the fact that Joseph's
wife Elizabeth (Flinton)? could not have been the mother of Joseph's first 2
sons at the age of 10 to 13. I don't know where the dates of her birth
came from,(1598) but it does not compute with the births of Joseph (b. abt
1610) and Benjamin (b. abt 1612) that have been circulated, and which seem
to be much earlier than Pharoah b. ca 1624 to 1635.
Does anyone else have a better handle on this information?
Joanne
Gay, I am from Joseph Cobb b. in NC about 1769. I have not found the
marriages of most of his siblings. There is one in Wash. Co., TN for
Etheldred, who m. Susannah McCoin/McColm/McCollum, etc. unsure of spelling.
They eventually moved to Lincoln Co., TN. He received a pension from the
War of 1812. There was a brother Frederick, who I haven't traced.

To anyone interested in the Eliza Cobb-Teal line. Joseph and Sarah Cobb
conveyed a deed to Edward Teal in 1801, book A page 216 Grainger County
Register of Deeds.
Joanne H.
To Gay Nix: Fannie Cobb (surely Frances) married a Teal and lived in
Mississippi. After tracing some Cobb deeds in Grainger Co., TN, I found
where there was a deed involvement between Edward Teal and Joseph Cobb, so
perhaps he was the brother-in-law of Joseph. I can't put my hands on the
folder right now, but will look further. I wasn't able to find the Teal
couple in the Miss. censuses, was anyone else able to? I didn't find her
sister Eliza there either. I think her husband was William Baker.
I've never heard of Fanny being called Franky.
Until later,
Joanne Huntsberry

Grainger Co, Tenn.

Hi Juanita, Looks like we are still on the same path. I did find some info on Alabama but it didn't work, so I've started all over. If Parthenia Ray b. 1852, was one of her children then Martha would have been born around late 1830's or early 40's. But so far nothing comes up on her. Hope someone out there has some info....Talk soon, Cathy

Ron, I ran across this family in an on-line transcription of the 1870 census of Russell, NY but either the transcriptionist made a serious mistake or something went on between 1870 and 1880 that we don't know about. The listing is:
HH #527
Cobb, Newton G., age 43, Farm Laborer, born NY
Cobb, Rosette, age 43, Keeping House, born VT
Cobb, John, age 13, at home, born NY
Cobb, George, age 8, born NY
Cobb, Harvey, age 7, born NY
Cobb, Marvin, age 5, born NY
Who, I wonder, is Newton? He's certainly not the same as the John Cobb in the 1880 census. This is where a look at an actual image of the 1870 census might be in order.
Good luck to you --
Nancy Shire

I would be very interested in reading the entire article. I am not certain but the Johannes Kolb that is referred to could be the son of Dielman Kolb and Agenes Schumacher. The Kolb's and their children were born in Wofscheim, Palatinate, Baden, Germany. They immigrated to the US sometime between 1691 and 1712 when Dielman died in Pennsylvania. Their son, Johannes was born 6-19-1683 in Germany, married Sarah in 1711 and died 1-31-1759 in St Mark's Parish, (Later Marlboro County), South Carolina.
Is this the same area? If so this Johannes was brother to my ancestor. The family changed the name gradually to Culp over the generations.
Thanks,
Melissa
