Dan Cobb, newsman, served the homelessBy MIKE SNYDER
Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle
Dan Cobb, a retired Houston Chronicle news executive who directed the newspaper's coverage of major stories ranging from hurricanes to local school desegregation, died Tuesday. He was 82.
Cobb, who did volunteer work with the homeless after retiring, died at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital from complications of congestive heart failure, said his son, David Cobb of Houston.
The elder Cobb joined the Chronicle in 1953 as a reporter and later was promoted to assistant city editor, city editor, news editor, assistant managing editor and executive managing editor-news. He retired in December 1985.
During most of Cobb's tenure, the Chronicle was an afternoon newspaper, publishing several daily editions with deadlines that began in the early morning and continued through midday. Cobb often arrived at the newspaper before 6 a.m. to begin directing the day's coverage.
His management style was rarely gentle.
"Cobb was a gruff, old-style editor who possessed great instincts," recalled Jack Loftis, the Chronicle's editor emeritus, who worked with Cobb for many years. "He knew how to cover breaking news, and I used to think he lived for hurricane seasons."
A few years after his retirement, Cobb began working with SEARCH, a nonprofit organization that serves the homeless. He volunteered on the day the agency opened its doors in 1989, said Sandy Reese-Kesseler, the group's executive director.
"The first day, there were two (clients), and the second day there were 100," Reese-Kesseler recalled. "He was cooking soup and serving clients. As brilliant as he was, he always would stop and meet with the clients and treat them with the utmost dignity."
Cobb produced SEARCH's quarterly newsletter, Rescue Journal, for several years, Reese-Kesseler said.
Daniel Webster Cobb was born Aug. 12, 1921, on a farm in southern Alabama. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute and started his newspaper career at the Birmingham Post.
In addition to his son, David, Cobb leaves a grandson, Brady Cobb, 17, of Houston, and a brother, Ned Cobb, of Alabama.
No funeral is planned, and arrangements for a memorial service are incomplete.

I don't know the exact connection between Alexander Grancer Cobb (b. about
1780) and Wm. Pinkney Cobb (b. 1788), but it seems clear they are related.
Alexander named his second son William P. (b. 1813). Also Alexander's eldest son
John (b. 1811) named his firstborn William Pinckney (b. 1831).
John Cobb (son of Alexander) married Elizabeth McCaskill after his first wife
Mary Elizabeth (Rigden) died. I wonder if Elizabeth McCaskill is related to
Sarah McCaskill? Also I have a Sarah Elizabeth Ricks (b. 1841 in AL) who moved
to Louisiana with many of the Cobbs & kin, who may be related to your Martha
Emma Ricks.
Please let me know if you can verify any connections.

Desperately seeking information on Jasper Cobb, one of the sons of John Allen S. Cobb and Mary Elizabeth Rigdon. John Allen and Mary Elizabeth migrated from Alabama to Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, between 1850 and 1860. Jasper Cobb was my gg grandfather. He married Nancy Horn, from Georgia, in 1859, in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. They had several children, one of whom was William Beauregard Cobb, my great grandfather. I have the 1860 U. S. census (Louisiana) which shows Nancy and Jasper as husband and wife, living next to Nancy's parents, William Cullen and Cynthia Gresham Horn.
Living next door was James Cobb, one of Jasper's brothers, and also in close proximity was William and Sarah Cobb, whom I believe to be Jasper's uncle, brother to John Allen S. Cobb. I am assuming that Jasper must have died between 1860 and 1870 because he is no where on the 1870 census. Also, Nancy remarried in 1869 to Thomas Daniel Sparks and had several children by him. Any information would be most helpful!
Thanks.

Can anyone help me connect this ancestor to her birthplace and parents? I would so appreciate any help.
Mercy/Mary COBB b. abt 1820, Ma. (unknown Co or Twp)
m. 25 Dec 1839, Gates, Monroe, NY to James
HUTTON, by Calvin Sperry, Esq.
Children (3) born in Gates
Elizabeth, 1840
William, 1842
Richard, 1844
The couple was located on the Gates, Monroe 1840 Census.
By 1850, they had migrated to E. Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Oh. They remained there through 1860, then moved to Amherst, Lorain, Oh., where the family all remained and were buried. Three more children were born to this family after moving to Ohio: Charles, Ella and Myrta.
I desperately need help in finding Mercy/Mary's birthdate, birthplace and parents, (according to Census records, all born in Ma.), and would appreciate any info on the Cobb parents, while in the Monroe Co area.
Do you know this family? Thanks in advance, Donna.

I have been gathering some census records of the Cobb family of William and
Nellie. I found him as Duran in one census and Fleming D. Cobb in another. She
was Elmina or Elmira in one, and Nancy E. in another.
Pretty sure it is the same folks.
This isn't my family, just thought I would help.
Do either of you need this data, or do you already have it?
