I am a Cobb descendant. Frederick William Cobb was my g-grandfather. His father was John C. Cobb. Frederick was born in Cheektowaga and left home at age 12. Story goes his family was wiped out & he emigrated to Wisconsin! Cousins of Frederick are Michael Bowers of Hamburg NY, and Clara Koester of Hamburg NY. Because of your research - was wondering if our Cobbs are related?
Thanks!

Between the messages getting posted directly to this list, and the ones
being gatewayed to the list, I'm getting confused. But I noticed the
following slide through my email box.
<< Rev John Cobb married Frances Smith in 1786 according to my records. One
child was Rev. Andrew Ambrose Cobb and I may have others in my records on
this marriage (don't have access to those records today). >>
I assume this was a response to somebody's question, but I never saw the
question. For the record, Rev John Cobb & Frankie Smith had twelve
children. One can find all sorts of claims assigning them 1-2 additional
daughters, but they're wrong. The good reverend's estate was quite
extensive when he died in 1841. It wasn't settled until 1860. Those
records are now in the Pickens Co, SC courthouse. Been there, done that.
Somewhere around here (don't ask me to find it), I have a spreadsheet
breakdown that accounts for the distribution of that estate, dollar for
dollar. The final analysis is that there were 12 children, several of who
were themselves deceased before the estate was finally settled, which
required their share to be distributed to their then living heirs (Rev
John's grandchildren). Andrew Ambrose Cobb was the 9th child born to John &
Frankie.
<< William Cobb son of Ambrose and Sarah Cobb. He was in Lincoln Co.,N.C. He
next moved to to S.C. joined Baptist Church 1812 Rev. John Cobb was Pastor.
He moved back to Lincoln Co 1818. HE went to Ga. 1844. Doe anyone know who
he married and children names.>>
I've seen this before, and at least part of it is wrong. I would refer to
the following posting I made to the COBB Family GenForum on 24 Feb 2001
(#4451).
" ----------------- RE: The first generation William Cobb, born 1765 in
Halifax Co, Va, and son of Ambrose and Sarah Cobb of Lincoln Co, NC.
This William died July 1833 in Cape Girardeau Co, MO. I examined his estate
papers personally just last summer, and they do reveal quite a bit of info,
which when combined with data from other sources, ends up like the
following:
William Cobb, b. 1765 VA, d. Jul 1833 MO. Married Mary "Polly" Abernathy Aug
7, 1787 in Lincoln Co, NC. Polly d. MO sometime after Jul 1833.
Their children were...
(1) Dicy md William Richards. Moved to GA. (2) Walter md Isabella Cox. Moved
to MO. (3) Starling md Nancy Penney. Died in MO in Jul 1833. (4) Ambrose b.
1833. No further record. Died young? (5) Sally md James Cox. Moved to MO.
(6) Stephen md Lovey Steeley. Moved to MO. (7) Eliza "Louisa" md XX Penney.
Moved to MO. (8) Polly md XX Quick. Moved to MO. (9) Copa moved to MO. No
futher record. (10) Nancy died MO in Jul 1833. (11) Jane md XX Hancil. Moved
to MO. (12) William, Jr was living in Illinois in Jul 1833. No further
record.
William and children Starling, Nancy, and Jane all died in a Cholera
epidemic in Jul 1833."
Here's part of another posting made 22 Aug 2000 (#3560).
" Concerning the William Cobb born 1765 that was the son of Ambrose and
Sarah Cobb of Lincoln Co. While the county marriage records are illegible
(been there too), his estate papers and the family bible of one of his
descendants establishes his wife's identity as being Mary "Polly" Abernathy.
And since Charles Abernathy (husband of William's sister Barbara) was the
bondsman for the marriage, this would coincide.
William was in Lincoln Co as late as 1820. He did join one of the Bollinger
wagon trains, and migrated to Cape Girardeau Co, MO where he died in July
1833."
I would find it doubtful that William Cobb ever moved to SC. He was named
co-executor (with his brother James) of the estate of Ambrose Cobb (their
father) in Lincoln Co, NC in 1797. James died in 1805, leaving William the
only person that could legally represent the estate, requiring his presence
in Lincoln Co. The estate was not settled until 1818. William is found on
the 1810 & 1820 census for Lincoln Co, and the 1830 census for Cape
Girardeau Co, MO.
All this can be found at "Cobb and Cobbs"...
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb/ambrose.htm which will be
updated in February.

PLEASE, people...there is NO evidence anywhere that this man was named Stephen John Cobb!!!!!
The only thing we know is that his wife was named Nancy ??? with no known surname. And we know from court documents what the names of some of the children were. There may have been more children but we know nothing that can be proved as to what this man's name was. It's more likely than anything else that his name was either William or John but extremely unlikely that his given name was ever Stephen! Can we please stop printing anything that says that his name was anything else? I know that this name came from a guess of mine....now it has taken on a life of it's own. When I'm dead and gone, who is going to take the effort to post corrections to this error?

Samuel Roland Cobb was the son of Warren David Cobb and Martha Henslee. Samuel and his seven siblings were orphaned in 1857, after the family had to moved to AR from GA. They were divided up between relatives and Samuel was raised by his mother's family.
Warren David Cobb was the son of Rowland Ballard Cobb and Mary Ann Evans. Rowland was the son of Rev. John S. Cobb and wife Frankie Smith, of Pickens Dist, SC.
You can find the complete pedigree here... "Cobb and Cobbs"... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb/ambrose.htm .

I am also a descendant of Ezekiel Cobb, through two of Athal Seaborn's
brothers Isaiah Lindsey Cobb and Benjamin Washington Cobb. Ezekiel served in
the War of 1812, but I do not believe he is the same Ezekiel that was in
Massachusetts during the Revolution. Our Ezekiel was born around 1765 in
North Carolina - and was unlikely to have been in Massachusetts and old
enought to fight there.
I have a great deal of information on Ezekiel's line. If you have any
questions, I would be glad to try to answer them.
