I found an entry for Sylvia Cobb in the register covering Jan/Feb/Mar 1912. I checked all four registers for 1912 and found only one other Sylvia Cobb born that year, but she was born in Norwich.
The details you need to give, should you want to order a birth certificate from the Family Records Centre are:
Year 1912; Quarter March; District Bristol; Volume 6a; Page 153 and the maiden surname of this Sylvia Cobb's mother was Harvey.
I've looked throught all the registers from 1913 to 1922 but have not yet found entries for Reginald or Tyrus Cobb. I'll keep looking.
Regards
George

Well, as it happens, quite a lot is known about the family of Robert E. Lee. There is a book - the name of which is escaping me, so I'll hop over to a site for a sec.....ah, Lees of Virginia - Seven generations by Paul Nagle publ 1990 or so - which covers the most famous lines but is mostly a narrative not a genealogy type writing - non-famous lines not well covered although there is, as I recall a nice chart in there someplace of the main lines. And Lee of Virginia published around 1890 or so, republished around 1950 with addenda - is more of a genealogy type thing. The Lees are basically related to everyone in VA. Seriously, Richard the Immigrant Lee had 8 children. He's buried over in the Lee burying ground....I think officially called the Cobb Burial Ground, in Ditchley, VA. Of his children, the only one I've paid attention to is Charles Lee, known to me as the least of the Lees, the youngest kid. There was a Lees of Virginia Society - I haven't heard from them lately - !
their archives is, I think, over in the Alexandria VA public library - last I heard about them was about 6 months ago, they had sold up one of the Lee museums in Alexandria to raise some money - the upkeep was killing them - I think that was one of the Robert E. museums. There is also the Jamestowne Society, which counts Richard Lee descendants as possible members. And there are lots of Lees in the VA genealogy publications. As to Lees related to Womacks. Well, none that I know of, but then, like I said, they were related to virtually everyone in VA. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find some convergence on some Womack line. Fortunately, the Lees were veterans at writing wills and other documents like diaries and deeds. Happy hunting!

Hello to all of you looking into your Iowa COBB connections... I have some very interesting news. that should help you in your research...
Last Christmas I wrote several Merrill COBBs looking for my long lost uncle Merrill Cecil Cobb... Merrill is my dad's older brother and over the of the many years fighting WWII and the Korean Wars... the lost touch with each other. All of the Merrill COBB families said that they weren't my Merrill and so I crossed them off my list. Yesterday, my sister sent me a few more Merrill COBBs to write and so I started to call them instead. Not realizing that one of these Merrill COBBs was one of the ones from last Christmas...we talked and his wife started to tell me about this man who dropped by and gave her his genealogy and told her that they were related and that their COBB line goes up into New England. I told her that that was very interesting and asked her to tell her what the man gave her. Here her husband's Iowa Cobb line, one that has been there in the Eldora, Iowa for about 130 years... is directly descended not only to Henry COBB of MA's line, but also to Winston Ch!
urchill's and Theodore Roosevelt's lines. So, while on the phone with her I went to Henry Cobb's line on-line and checked out some of her names and they were there. I ran off a bunch of google searches using the names that she gave me. This is so cool. So, even though her Merrill Cobb isn't my Merrill Cobb and we aren't related that way... we are distant cousins because her Henry COBB of MA and my Ambrose COBBs of VA are cousins.
Now, how's that for a happy ending.
So all of you Iowa COBBs can start looking into the Henry COBB of MA's line to see if there is a possible connection.
For those of you who have a spiritual side... we both kinda chuckled about all of this that has transpired over the past year and realized that God has a sense of humor and was chucking Himself as we finally connected again... this time for keeps.
It is really not surprising that the Iowa COBBs are related... I have lots of COBB cousins and my dad's sister was from out there in the Quad Cities area... and some even down in Davenport. Just a bit curious now to why my COBB cousins moved from IL and MO into Iowa... did they go there to hang out with their cousins until they got back on their feet there? We may never know for sure... but perhaps as we look into the census records and land records, maybe then it will show just how close they lived from each other. Over the years, as I traveled around to different conferences, I looked up my distant cousins... so it is conceivable that they also knew their distant cousins as well way back then.
So, if you are interested in what I have uncovered for my new friend and distant cousin out in Iowa... let me know and I'll send you my links and google searches. Happy researching.
Hope this helps.
Peace and blessings.
Dolores Cobb Phifer.

Hello Cobb Researchers and (hopefully) Ty Cobb Fans,
I am please to announce that I have just published Ty Cobb's Memoirs, which
he originally wrote in 1925 after completing 20 years with the Detroit
Tigers. This is a 168 page paperback book with 36 chapters, plus a
foreword, appendix, index and other additions. It is professionally printed
in 5.5 by 8 inch format, and retails for $12.95. All profits from this
book are being donated to the Ty Cobb Museum in Royston, Georgia. You can
see a picture of the front and back cover of the book at:
http://hometown.aol.com/rcobb2535/
I have done a very limited printing of only 50 copies of this "first
edition," so these if these sell quickly, it might be quite a while before I
have any more.
If you would like to purchase a copy of the book, or if you have any
questions about the book and its purpose, please email me at:
ron_cobb(a)hp.com
.
Here is the description of the book that is on the back cover:
"In the fall 1925, Ty Cobb put pen to hand and wrote his personal
memoirs. In thirty-six individual chapters, Ty detailed the good and bad
experiences of his first 20 years in baseball. Unlike his 1914 book
"Busting 'Em", and his 1961 autobiography, "My Life in Baseball," both of
which were ghost written, this effort was Ty's very own. These "Memoirs"
were syndicated by the Christy Walsh Syndicate, and published serially in
the New York Evening News over several months, beginning in December 1925.
They have been buried in library stacks and microfilm ever since. Reprinted
here for the first time in seventy-five years, they have been carefully
transcribed from very old copies of the Evening News articles, then indexed
and reprinted in book form, along with supplemental material and commentary
by the Editor.
In these Memoirs you can read, for the first time since the original
1925 publication, Ty's own description of the key milestones of his career.
Find out what really happened in the Claude Lueker incident, when Ty entered
the grandstand and fought with an abusive fan, was suspended from the
league, and caused the first Professional Baseball Strike. Read Ty's own
description of his relationship with his Detroit teammates, and how this
strike profoundly changed that relationship. Get the straight story on who
was, and who wasn't, spiked by Ty Cobb, and whether it was intentional.
Find out about Ty's friendship with Dutch Leonard, who a year later would go
public with betting allegations that ultimately cost Ty his job at Detroit,
and almost end his career.
Ever the one to hand out advice and criticism of the game and its
players, Ty held nothing back in writing these Memoirs. He offered advice
to players and prospects on almost every aspect of the game - mental and
physical. His careful analysis of his contemporary players lead to his
personal selection of All Star teams for both American and National Leagues.
For the Ty Cobb fan or critic, this is must reading. There is nothing
else like it. The perspective that Ty offers in these Memoirs should not be
overlooked by anyone who wishes to truly understand this great and complex
man."
Thanks,
Ron Cobb

The following data suggest Samuel, Thomas and Elijah Powers were occupying
land in Shelby Co TN near each other in 1827. Abner and John Powers were
occupying land there also by 1831.
