>From the Volunteer File Manager Lecture Series 101 in the School of Hard Knocks we find that as such, expect to receive a multitude of private email requests, more often than not, asking the same question. Since the ONLY foolish question is the one that is NOT asked, I choose to answer those questions on a wide distribution such as these message boards. Although I may not have addressed YOUR concerns, I have assisted several others of my COBB Cousin Researchers (CCR's) regardless of how distantly we are related. Even if you are NOT related, you are still researching Cobb Cousins. And yes, I personally created the phrase and acronym of "Cobb Cousin Researchers (CCR)" as a method to publicly post a repetitive question while creating a blanket of annonymity for others of a more sensitive personality than my own to SHIELD them from "constructive criticism" such as contained herein. (A frequent reason given for NOT utilizing open forum which as a by product reduces sharing). Ple!

Is this the same as Dr. Elizabeth Moore, Collections Manager at the Virginia Museum of Natural History? She does mostly Indian research there, I think.Found it on the Web. No genealogy links or anything like that, not a bio of her, unless I missed it.

I sent an email to the reference Desk at Joyner Library (ASKREF@MAIL>ECU>EDU asking if there was just a simple biography of Richard Cobb available in their library. I said I knew there were mulltiple boxes of material in the special collections from Elizabeth Moore. The ref. Librarian said there was no bio.
My next step is to check the local genealogy society near there. There has got to be an easier way than to go thru all those boxes. Someone must have abstracted a little bit.

I don't know this family, but was looking in the VA Cobb research that I have from yrs ago. I did not find a marriage for a Cobb to a Rebecca, except the Robert one, but I do have the Indexes for the 1810 & 1820 VA census' and there is a Jeremiah Cobb, in both, in Southhampton Co Va. Several Cobbs are there, in fact. Perhaps he already knows this, but just in case...

I didn't matter which library I visited 20 years ago. What I need isn't there anyway. I wrote to the Virginia Beach Library (which is tremendously helpful) and the librarian found that is is located in only one place in the world, and that is in the Joyner library, E. Carolina Univ. It is contained in 62 boxes and has not been published in any form. The material can be searched but the staff has never been indexed, except as I said previously. They do minimal research for remote customers (not sure what that is). The ECU web is http://www.ecu.edu Maybe we can find someone in the Cobb line that can check a box out. Joanne
The special collections dept. is http://www.lib.ecu.edu/Spc/Coll/ECMC.html
The Univ. is located in Greenville, NC

Virginia;
I'm from the McCurley line. My g-grandmother was Ella McCurley. She was married to my g-grandfather, Howell Marcenis Cobb, William's brother. William's other brothers were Samuel J., James Knox and John Wesley Cobb. I don't have any other information on Willilam's wife Levcie J. Crum except that she was born sometime around 1855 and they were married on 6 May 1873 in Wilkinson Co.. They had two children that I know of; B.T. & Bythel L. Cobb.

I have another CCR request which I am unable to identify:
Alexander Cobb b. abt. 1772 in South Carolina m. Elizabeth Ruth Banks abt. 1803, produced 11 children. Moved in abt. 1820 to the Mulberry Creek area (what is now Jemison, Chilton County, Alabama).
My connection is through, Leo Shelby Love (1890-1955), son of Alice Paralee Shelby (1865-1935), daughter of William Houston Shelby (1836-1897) & Elizabeth Malone Cobb (1842 - 1917).
Elizabeth Malone Cobb was the daughter of James Jackson Cobb (1815 - 1865) & Ellizabeth Malone Campbell.
James Cobb was a son of Alexander Cobb & Elizabeth Ruth Banks. During the Civil War Alexander & Elizabeth had a cotton plantation in Jemison, Alabama It was eventually destroyed by Confederate maurauders. The family graveyard and parts of the old home are still standing.
The information I have (unproven) is that Alexander's father was Jeremiah Cobb the son of Gershom Cobb & Rebecca LNU from Edgefield, South Carolina.

I receive this question frequently so I feel that the question rates some wider exposure. To resolve this question, visit he "Cobb and Cobbs" homepage at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cobb/ and take the following steps:
1. On the home page click on "Read Me" in the line: The website README file: There is important information there, so please take a moment to read it.
2. Return to the Home Page.
3. Go to the Website Index further down the Home Page.
4. Search the links to the various Cobb lines of which there are currently six.
5. If you find a reference in one of the indexes to the names you are searching, contact the appropriate File Manager.
6. If you cannot find the name you are searching in the indexes, pick a File Manager who you feel is most closely associated geographically with your Cobb line and contact them. I know that ALL of the File Managers check out requests and cooperate amongst ourselves to get someone to the appropriate file manager.
Remember, provide sufficient information (dates, names, places, relationships, etc) for us to make a determination. Try looking up a John Cobb or Mary Cobb or Ambrose Cobb without any other reference!

I would certainly appreciate anything you have. I know Jeremiah had a brother named Sanders, sometimes Saunders, and there is thought that Sanders and Alexander are one and the same. Need to explore the Gershom Cobb. I am among the many, many searchers who have been looking for this illusive Cobb.
Bob,
I have no proof linking Jacob Wilkins Cobb with Joseph S line at the present
time.
Jacob Wilkins Cobb is my proven ancestor.
According to Bible records in the Folsom family, the photocopy that was sent
to me by Louise Martin, reads:
(Absalom is not given)
Grandma Folsom's Family
Unity Cobb was born Jan. 3, 1776
James Cobb was born Oct. 16, 1793
Joseph Cobb was born May 14, 1796
Alley Cobb was born Jan 12, 1798
Jacob Cobb was born Mar. 5, 1800
Elizabeth Cobb was born Mar. 20, 1802
Aquilla Cobb was born Feb. 5, 1805
Nancy Cobb was born Mar. 2, 1815
The birthdate for Jacob Cobb matches the date in the Bible records for Jacob
Wilkins Cobb family. I also have a photocopy of these records from the Lake
Blackshear Regional Library in Sumter Co., GA. Jacob is listed as Jacob W.
Cobb in these records, giving his birthday, Mar. 5, 1800, and marriage to
Jane M. Wheeler on Sept. 21, 1826 (in Twiggs Co., GA)
Some of the information that I have on the children of Unity:
James Cobb was born Oct. 16, 1793. I believe this to be the one listed 1820
census in Wilkinson Co., GA:
James Cobb
1 male 10-16 (?Aquilla age 15, b. 1805?)
1 male 26-45 (? James age 27, b. 1793?)
1 female under 10 (?Nancy age 5, b. 1815?)
2 females 16-26 (?Alley age 22, b. 1798; Elizabeth age 18, b.
1802?)
1 female 26-45 (?Unity age 44, b. 1776?)
I believe that Unity and younger children were living with son James in this
census record. Unity is listed with a different son in every census. I
believe that James may be the James Cobb that died in 1854 according to
estate records in Chattahoochee Co., GA, listing John S. Duncan (husband of
Alley Cobb) and Aquilla Cobb as two of the securities.
Joseph Cobb was born May 14, 1796. Joseph m. Kixzeire/Kisiah Wadsworth
October 19, 1820 in Jones Co., GA. In 1850 Marion Co., GA, Unity was living
with this son. Joseph received a guardianship on Unity in 1848 stating that
she was an insane person.
Alley Cobb was born Jan 12, 1798 (according census, she was born in Hancock
Co., GA) She married John S. Duncan. They are listed 1850 in Muscogee Co.,
GA) John is listed in most all of the court records involving the listed
children of Unity Cobb. According to History of Chattahoochee Co., GA by N.K.
Rogers, Alley is the daughter of Absalom Cobb and Unity McDate.
Jacob Cobb was born Mar. 5, 1800, Washington Co., GA, married Jane Moore
Wheeler, daughter of Avery Wheeler and Mary Moore.
Elizabeth Cobb was born Mar. 20, 1802. I have not been able to identify
Elizabeth. Can anyone help? Did she die young? I believe that she was in
James' household in 1820 Wilkinson Co., GA census. I wonder if she could be
the one who married Joseph Ellis Jan. 15, 1824 in Wilkinson Co., GA??? (ages
are close) The wife of Joseph Ellis is listed on the estate settlement of
Joshua Cobb and is believed to be the daughter of Joshua. But I have also
been given information that Joshua had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Ann Cobb
who married Levi Mathews/Mathis. Two Elizabeth's???
Aquilla Cobb was born Feb. 5, 1805, Washington Co., GA, married Sarah Bagley
November 3, 1839 in Muscogee Co., GA. They are listed 1840 and 1850 in
Muscogee Co., GA. In 1840 there is a female 60-70 listed. I believe that this
is Unity, age 64. Aquilla died 1857 in Chattahoochee Co., GA.
Nancy Cobb was born Mar. 2, 1815 Baldwin Co., GA, married Elias Folsom Feb.
17, 1835. Elias was born Dec. 22, 1808 Hancock Co., GA. This information from
Folsom Genealogy by Paul Douglas Dingwell Vol. III. The dates of birth and
death for Elias Fosom and Nacy Cobb are taken from the family bible records
in the posession of Helen Louise (Crockett) Brewer of Irving, Texas. Nancy
and Elias are listed 1840 and 1850 Muscogee Co., GA and 1860- Chattahoochee
Co., GA

Sheila, I might have sent you information before also, I'm not sure. I have information I have gathered over time. My g.g.g.g.grandfather was Alexander (possibly Sanders nickname) Cobb. The info I have is Alexander had a brother Jeremiah and father Gershom Cobb. There is info regarding Rebecca Cobb Gentry. I have not been able to get beyond this one. I do have some information including sources. Let me know if you would like to have this. I can send it Word attachment.
