According to the info that I have (and I'm NOT saying that it's correct)
one Nicholas Cobb m. possibly a Deborah LNU. This Nicholas b. ca 1690
Isle of Wight VA, had a son named Nicholas b. c 1720 in VA? and possibly
died in Martin Co NC ca 1780. He married Sarah Hardy and they had the
following children.
John b. ca 1741, whose children were according to Nicholas' will, John
Jr, David, Jesse, Nicholas.
Hardy b. c 1742 who m. Elizabeeth and had Hardy, Shadrack, Elias,
Solomon and Rebecca.
Nicholas b ca 1746 who m. Martha Cooper and had JOhn, Leonard and
Albritton.
This son John is not to be confused with the one that married Mary Exum,
who according to the book "The Cobbs of the Tidewater" was son of
Benjamin Cobb and Mary Tobie.
It also says that this Nicholas was born in Southampton Co. Virginia
while it was part of Isle of Wight Co. and lived there for 40 to 50
years, but moved to Martin Co. North Carolina after 1771. Whether he
actually returned to Southampton is not known but it is hightly probable,
for two deeds recorded there during 1778 indicate it. On Oct. 4, 1778 he
bought 75 ac. from Henry Pebworth. he was discribed as "Nicholas Cobb of
Martin Co. North Carolina".
Thanks to Marilyn Cobb for providing this info.
Now for some census data relating to this line.
1790 Martin Co, NC had David, Sarah, Nicholas and John Cobb. It's
possible but hard to prove that this Sarah is the wife of Nicholas Sr and
since she is in a separate household the Nicholas most likely her son.
This John is not the one that married Sarah Capehardt because they are in
Bertie Co NC at this point. This John is either John, son of Nicholas,
Sr or his grandson. This David is most likely to be son of John, and
grandson of Nicholas Sr.
Now we believe that Hardy died before 1778 when his father's will was
written in Southampton Co, VA, since the will refers to the children of
my son Hardy, deceased. Nicholas Jr died ca 1800 in Southampton Co, VA.
Now the question is when and where did John die and what happened to his
children.
I believe from census records (which can be tricky) that this John and
David went to Anson Co NC where they were in 1800. I also believe that
this David was the one that married Martha Bryant and went next to Rhea
Co TN before ending up ca 1809 in MS territory in an area that was to
become Madison Co, AL.
I also believe from various sources that David and brother John and
possibly his brother Jesse went to Madison Co. It is possible that John
or Jesse was the man who was married to Nancy LNU and were parents of
Azariah, Richard Dickson, etc. (all listed in land transactions that
Nancy transfered property to her 8 children ca 1835.)
There is also this deed record in Martin Co, NC.
Deed from Martin Co., NC:
* John Cobb and Sarah his wife for and in consideration for the sum of
one hundred and ninety pounds specie (paid in hand to them) deed to David
Cobb of the County of Martin Planter "one certain tract of land lying in
the County of Martin on the south side of the flat swamp butted and
bounded as followeth Beginning at, a Cypress standing in the sd flat
swamp turning then up the Various Courses of the sd. Swamp to a Oak & Gum
thence north forty-five degrees West Eighty poles to Isaac Glissons line
thence south forty five degrees west, along Glisson's line one hundred
and seventy six poles to the Center of three Maples Standing in the
Cabbin branch thence along a small the dividing between John Whitfield
and John Cobb South thirty degrees East one hundred and twenty poles to
the Center of two Pines thence east ten degrees South one hundred and
eighteen to the Center of a pine & oak thence along a line of Mached
trees to the first Station Containing one hundred and ninety acres of
land be the same more or less Including the plantation whereon the sd.
David Cobb now lives with all the privileges . . . "
* Sale was in Fee simple "with sd. David Cobb" from "sd. John Cobb and
Sarah Cobb."
* Presence of witnesses Jesse Cobb (his mark), James Glisson, Dixon Cobb,
and Semer Cobb. Signed by John Cobb and Sarah Cobb (her mark.)
* Dated Dec. 18, 1792.
WE can't tell from this record if John is the father or the brother of
DAvid but I do believe, but can't prove, that he was the father. The
very interesting part of this document is the witnesses. Jesse Cobb,
probably David's brother, Dixon and Semer Cobb (who are they?)
Now Nancy mentioned above had a son name Richard Dixon Cobb but he was
not born until c 1798 so this isn't him listed as Dixon. Nancy's son
Azariah named his first son Semer Cobb but he wasn't born until ca 1819.
Here then are a few questions:
Who are these Jesse Cobb, Dixon and Semer Cobb? Jesse is NOT the one
that married Elizabeth Heritage since that man could write and this one
could not!
What really happened to John, DAvid and Jesse, sons of JOhn, son of
Nicholas? Nicholas stayed in NC for some period. In 1800 there is no
Nicholas Cobb in NC, there is a Jesse in Martin and one if Lenoir (m.
Elizabeth Heritage), David and JOhn are in Anson Co. NC.
In 1810 there is a John in Anson Co, David is squatting on land in what
is still MS territory, Jesse is where? there is one in Grainger Co TN
that could possibly be him and Hardy, son of Hardy, grandson of Nicholas
Sr is in Martin co according to the index at ancestry.com which when one
sees the image he is not there or on the 2 pages before or after the one
given.
And the last question is this..... if John jr, David and Jesse are not
the ones who went to MAdison Co, AL (there is some evidence that this
Jesse did show up there) then who are these people and why is there no
one searching for them and their ancestors?
Thanks for any feedback.

Any help on these families greatly appreciated. I will be glad to share info.

I have obtained an original 1877 Commencement Programme for Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. This was only the nineth graduating class from this elite school. The entire graduating class size was 78 graduates and the commencement was closed to the public. I surmise there were only about 100 of these programs printed.
This program was found in an old bread bag at a recent auction and is in very good condition.
I will be glad to e-mail copies of this document to anyone who may have interest in it.

Does anyone have the Index page for COBB/COBBS of the 1830 Federal Census
of Indiana? If you do, would it be possible to scan that page and e-mail
it to me? I am trying to include all the COBB/COBBS in Indiana for 1820,
1830, 1840 and possibly 1850, however, my local library does not have the
1830 Federal Census of Indiana Index book.

Lisa,
I am very interested in learning about your family. I think that there may be
some connection to mine.
James Monroe is a very common name in the Cobb families, but the only info
that I have on the middle name is from the census record. I have James D.
Cobb of Henry Co., AL as the son of Mark A.(Absolom?) Cobb. Census records
are often incorrect and family info should be more accurate. I have the
children of James D. as Benjamin, William Jasper, and Christopher Columbus. I
would be very grateful if you could add to my info. Which child of James is
your ancestor?
The children of Mark A. Cobb and Mary Dixon as I have them:
Harriet, James D, William J, David D/W, Louisa, Benjamin, Mary R.
Mark A. Cobb moved to Clarke Co., AL and remarried. My ggg grandfather moved
to Clarke Co. abt. 1845. He was James Jackson Cobb b. Sept. 25, 1827 in
Twiggs Co., GA. His father was Jacob Wilkins Cobb, Sr. b. Mar. 5, 1800 in
Washington Co., Georgia. Jacob was the son of Absolom Cobb and Unity
Elizabeth McDade.
My James Cobb and yours are about the same age. I would love to exchange info
with you.
Anne K
Does any one have any more information on this family? I am pretty sure
they are mine, but there is a discrepancy with the middle name. My gg
grandfather was born in Sept of 1860. I know he had a brother named
Benjamin. I also know that James Cobb and Mahala Kirkland were his
parents. However, the Kirkland book that I have shows him has James D.
Cobb Jr. My immediate family, including this man's son, and my great
grandfather, say that his name was James Monroe Cobb. I am hoping some
one can help me with this. I would appreciate any help.
thanks,
Lisa
