Sometimes I think Rootsweb is quite a boon to family historians and sometimes I think it misleads us.
Rootsweb has NC-GA-TN family consisting of the same group of children but ascribes two differentfathers:
ThomasHouston Cobbs b1821 GA
JamesMurray Cobbs b1825GA
Nancy Cobbsb1831 TN
SamuelCulbersonCobbs b1835 TN
John Calvin Cobbs b 1838
Ralph
Margaret
Hannah
Then it says that the fatheris Samuel B. Cobbs b 1789 NC d 1870 Mahakia IA, that son Samuel was born in Madison Co.,TN.
Elsewhereit says the fatheris WilliamJohn Cobbs b 1789 NC. and that son Samuel was bornin MonroeCo.
Now checkingthe 1840 census for MonroeCobb reveals a WilliamCobb who has 3 sons born 1820-1825 (not 1 son), 1 son born 1825-30 (just like the abovefamily), 1 son born
1830-35 (which could be Samuel C above), but no sons born 1835-40. If John Calvin Cobbwas born 1838, it doesn'tseemlike this William could be the father.
Yet the Samuel Cobb in Madison Co, KY is even less of a match in the1830 or 1840 census.
Does anyone have any census information for this family in 1850 and thereafter?
Richard
Monroe Co. p152 Cobb William 01130001- 0110101
Janos,
It looks like the William Cobb of Monroe County in 1840 was in Blount Co.,
TN in 1830 since both had 3 sons born 1820-25. Do you have a census record
for William in 1850? Does it say he was born in NC? Do you have dates for
the births of his sons and daughters? Does it say they were born in TN?
I had thought this was a William Cobb from Virginia with Virginia born sons,
but it looks like it wasn't.
I guess I should be looking in KY for the parents of my William Cobb b 1823
VA.

Seeking information on the family of William Virginia Cobb b.1778 Richmond, VA married in 1820 Portsmouth, NH to Elizabeth Stoodly Noble b.1802 Portsmouth, dau. of Joseph Noble and Elizabeth Folsom.
Any information greatly appreciated.
Richard,
My line has long believed that the Thomas Cobbs in Albemarle Co. is the
father or our Thomas Cobbs of Campbell Co. later, (1737/8-1825). The first
Thomas (d 1761), left a Will naming Charles, Thomas, and Mary Cam'll, as
children. I have a guess that these are just the eldest children, and he may
have had more. Of course he was gone before your Richard was born. Sons
Thomas and Charles went on to Campbell, (Charles was also in Bedford for a
while). Neither of them had a son named Richard.
I suspect that the Thomas in 1785, Albemarle is this son, Thomas. I am only
guessing, so don't quit looking at him on that account. I have a little
research on this, will have to dig it out and see what. I also have some
Cobbs research in general that may mention a Richard. I have had to move out
of part of my house because of water damage, but I am slowly bringing my
files, etc., home.
Carleen
There seems to be a Richard Cobbs who was born in 1798, raised in Albemarle Co, VA, and died in 1828 in Monroe Co., TN. He left a wife and three children. He was probably not married til after 1820 and hence doesn't appear in the 1820 census in VA and died before the 1830 census. No wonder this is a hard family to trace.
In 1834, there is a record of a Lucy Cobbs selling a slave in Monroe County. By 1850, we find a Lucy Cobbs in Hamilton Co, TN (born 1801 Virginina) with a child, Palrich b 1823 VA. Presumably, this is the family of Richard Cobbs.
I note there is a Thomas Cobbs in the 1785 Albemarle County census, but have not checked the other censuses.
I have a note that there are at least 2 Cobbs in the 1790 census for Albemarle.
Richard McMurtry
Hi Sheila,
I was wondering if you could tell me something about the ancestors of
Solomon Cobb as far as when (and what county) they came to NC and when they
came to TN.
I was also wondering whether this family might be suitable for a "Special
Report" for posting on the Cobb/Cobbs website, similar to what Mike did for
the "Cobbs of Fannin County Texas" and the "Cobbs of McMinn Co, TN".
I am preparing a special report on "The Cobb Family of Northampton Co., VA"
and maybe even a "Virginia-born Cobb Families in Tennessee in 1850".
I have been searching for 2 years for some evidence of who the William Cobb
b 1823 VA, md 1847 Wilson Co., TN might be and all I run into seem to be
dead ends.
I thought I had struck paydirt when I found a William Cobb in 1830 in Blount
Co and 1840 in Monroe County, but neither of those counties has any records
of this William; he may have left the county after 1840, but there are 176
William Cobb in the 1850 census scattered all around the country. I just
may have to plod through every one of those just to know whether or not he
was still alive.
Anyway, I'm thinking that if each of us posted everything we found in
special reports, then the Cobb site could be quite a boon for those of us
with incalcitrant problems.

These two references for Robertson County probably are for some relative of
Solomon, son?, brother?. In the index I looked at the will entry was for
William Cobb, not Cobbs. You might want to double check the mortality
census to verify the name as Cobbs or Cobb.
entry on page 217 has:
#4 William H. Cobbs, age 26, male, married, born Tennessee, died
February, cause of death-inflamation of the liver, number of days ill-15
days [ actual page in mortality census is #627 of Robertson County
Tennessee]
TENNESSEE
ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE
PROBATE RECORDS

p. 293 William H. Cobbs Letter of Estate...March 1850...William H. Cobbs is
dead and having made no will...application being made by John J. Dunn to
have letters of Administration granted to him...granted... make an
inventory...signed J.C. Winfield clerk
[this is a faded document and this is about all I can read for sure]

Message Board Post:
Wedding story from newspaper clipping found in the Bible of Nellie Irene Stevenson.
QUIET WEDDING --- Prominent Young People of Fayette are United in Marriage -- SHORT WEDDING TOUR --- Jolly Crowd of Married and Unmarried Friends Follow to Randalia.--
The most important local even of the week is the marriage of Mr. Oliver W. Stevenson and Miss Imogene E. Cobb.
The romance began back in the days when both were students at Upper Iowa University and add emphasis to the remark of Prof. C. P. Colgrove, now Vice President of the State Normal School at Cedar Falls, when he defined a college as a match making institution.
The wedding was solemnized at high noon of Wednesday at the family home of the bride's parents Sidney Cobb and wife.
The rooms were beautifully decorated with wild crab apple blossoms, carnations and roses, a combination which at this season of the year is unsurpassed.
Dr. R. G. Rich, wife and daughter of David City, Neb. (Mrs. Rich is the only sister of the bride) arrived Tuesday and as the hours of Wednesday forenoon wore away the immediate relatives of the groom and a few relatives and intimate friends of the bride gathered at the Cobb residence.
It is but natural that Dr. J. W. Bissell of Waterloo who was president of the University for more than a quarter of a century including the time that both the bride and groom were in college, should be chosen above all others to perform the ceremony. At a few minutes past twelve Mrs. John Graf took her place at the piano and as she played the notes of Medelssohn's wedding march, the contracting parties passed to their place under the decoration in the parlor where Dr. Bissell stood awaiting them.
In his own tender and solemn manner the doctor, who as he said "had known the parties from their babyhood," performed his sacred duty.
After the congratulations had been received the company sat down to a delectable wedding dinner.
In order to avoid the hilarious attention of friends, the contracting parties dashed down the stairs as a carriage drove up and before the company had time to realize what was going on, whirled away toward Randalia to take the four o'clock train for Chicago.
The friends were not to be out done however, and immediately followed with a team which brought them to Randalia as soon as the newly weddedc ouple reached there, and succeeded in sending them off with all the jokes, rice and old shoes which are so essential to such an occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson will remain in Chicago a week and upon their return will occupy the house opposite the Henderson library on the West.
Too much can hardly be said complimentry to these young people. They will take a prominent part in the social, business and political life of the town and county. The groom is fast becoming one of the leading attorneys of the county and this is but the beginning of his career.
Does anyone know who the Solomon Cobb was who was born ca 1800 and who came
to Robertson Co., TN ca 1830? Also, there is a William H. Cobb who died in
Robertson Co., in 1850? Does anyone have access to an 1850 mortality index
for Tennessee that can tell me the age and state of birth of the William
H.Cobb who died in Robertson Co in early 1850?
I am hoping that this William H. Cobb is the same William H. Cobb who
married in 1822 in Northampton Co, VA, but there are so many William Cobbs,
its hard to tell.

might be a lead or clue for Cobb researchers:
> Mrs. Marie Sarah Cobb, (maiden name unknown) married Ulysses E. Dodge on
11/20/1890. Ulysses was her second husband. Marie Sarah Cobb Dodge was
Ulysses' second marriage (1) Elizabeth Trimball). According to info at
courthouse her request was to be buried next to her first husband - Mr. ?
Cobb. Her step-sons were listed in her will as John P. Cobb and his son
Harold Cobb. I would be interested in learning her maiden name.
