Hi!
I am trying to find out further information on a line of Cobbs that came from Connecticut to Bath, Stueben County, New York to Ohio. To date we know that J. James Cobb (b: 26 Feb 1792 in Connecticut), and his sister, Susanna Cobb (bc: 1806 in Connecticut) went to Bath, Steuben County, New York with their parents and at least one other sibling before the War of 1812. According to service records, J. James and Susanna both ended up moving thru western Pennsylvania eventually living in eastern Ohio and one other unnamed sister supposedly "went west". Many of the descendants of this line eventually moved to Michigan. If any of this sounds familiar or connects up with your New York Cobbs, I'd love to compare notes further. (FYI - one of Susanna's granddaughters was named "Harriet".)
Take care. And good luck in your search!
Cherre

David, Do you know if James's son James Knox Polk b. 1851 settled in Geneva Co., AL and had a son named David T. Cobb? David was born in 1872 so the dates would be right.
Any information on this James Knox Polk Cobb would be very helpful even if only to eliminate a possibility.
We beleive David's Father was James K. P. Cobb.(information from land grant of 1891 in Geneva Co., AL)

Good Morning Edna,
Reference to your inquery, sorry don't seem to match my familyat this time, however there may be a match if I can get back into the GA state history of my group. At the present I cannot find the area of GA my COBB family came from. The earliest I have found them is in Calloway Co., KY, and in the 1850 census of that area John COBB indicated he was born in the state of Georgia. I do have quite a bit of info on descendants on this line so feel free to e-mail direct at gdm(a)hbeark.com

Jesse James Connection?
Thanks Dolores for the information, I cannot find any connection but I do find the James story quite interesting.
The following information came out in the White River Quarterly in Taney Co., Missouri some time ago.
It is said by some in the family that one of the Cobb girls married Jesse James, her name was Zerelda Cobb. Research however seems to prove this untrue. Jesse James wife's name was Zerelda Cole. [According to what I can find.] You may have more information concerning this.
The story goes as follows;
There was a spring called "Cold Spring" which flowed from under a rock ledge, crystal clear and ice cold, near Swan Creek, near Forsyth Missouri, at the junction of hwy 86 and state hwy 160. An ideal spot for a picnic. The COBB family was up early, as usual, the chores and housework done in short order, a big basket packed with food and covered with a linen table cloth. Hay was sprad in the wagon box for the children to ride on; and they were on their way. A six or seven mile trip by wagon.........Frank and Jesse James, with two more of their 'gang' were there. A well-dressed man, a total stranger to anyone present, kept following the James gang from place to place. This continued for some time and finally Jesse ordered the stranger to stop following them and mind his own business. The stranger, paid not attention. Charles COBB and Laura C. (JONES) had taken their children to the spring for a drink. Charles was dipping the water, handing it to his wife who in turn was giving!
each child a drink. Suddenly a shot rang out, followed by another and another in rapid succession. When the first shot was fired, Charles had at that instant stooped over to refill the dipper. The bullet went wild, missing his head by inches and striking the rock at the back of the spring. A large piece of the rock was blown away, and this remained the same in appearance unil the spring wsa covered by the now Bull Shoals Lake. The stranger lay dead on a few feet from the COBB family. All efforts of identity was futile, he was buried in the Snapp Cemetery, in an unmarked grave, [this cemetery is near the site, I have seen it myself] A court trial was held, many being present who attended the picnic. Charles H. COBB and his wife Laura were among them. There was no definite proof who fired the fatal shot, the stranger had started the trouble, therefore Jesse and his gang went free.
Zee COBB, supposed wife of Jesse James was the daughter of one of Charles H. COBB'S brothers. His brothers were;
John William COBB
Jesse H. COBB
Thomas Logan COBB
Charles H. and Laura C. (Jones) COBB were my gg grandparents.
Charles H. COBB'S father was John COBB b. 1811, d. 1879, his mother was Margaret WRAY/RAY. John came from the state of GA. Margaret was born in TN. They were married in Calloway Co., KY.
