Dr. Cobb was one of the most prominent citizens that ever resided in
Tolland. He is reported as having stood high in his profession, and as
having enjoyed the entire confidence of the community. He was honored by the
town and the public with several important and responsible offices.
He was eight times elected a member of the General Assembly, and likewise
attended two extra sessions.
He was thirteen years a Justice of the Peace, when there were but two
Justices in town; and most of the time was the acting magistrate.
In this sphere of duty he gave very general satisfaction, and his
ministrations were regarded as equitable, discreet, and promotive of the
public tranquillity.
His moral influence in society was very effective in restraining vice and
dishonesty, and he did much to encourage sobriety
and virtue. While living he was greatly respected, and his memory will long
remain as the conscientious, upright citizen and honest man. He died on the
sixth day of April, 1781, aged 65 years.
He left many descendants in Tolland and elsewhere.

Bicknell Genealogy
Nathan Bryant COBB;
of Strafford,Vermont, son of Daniel and Marinda (Bryant) Cobb, was born at
Strafford, Oct. 14, 1827, and is descended from old Puritan stock. His
maternal great-grandfather and grandfather were among the minute men who
fired on the green at Lexington, opposing the forces of British tyranny, and
his paternal grandfather, Nathan Cobb, was also a soldier of the Revolution.
Daniel Cobb, his father, struggling under adverse circumstances, acquired a
good education and became a successful lawyer at Strafford. Senator J S.
Morrill says concerning him, "Judge Cobb for nearly half a century was the
chief legal counsel in town, an earnest advocate and safe adviser." Though a
cripple he saw service at the battle of Plattsburg. Mr. Nathan Bryant. Cobb,
though an invalid much of his life, has done good service in many of the
town offices, has been an extensive reader, and is considered an
experienced, trustworthy and well-informed man. He was educated in the
common schools of Strafford, and entered Norwich University, but an illness
which proved nearly fatal prevented the completion of his collegiate career
A Republican in his political faith, he was elected town clerk in March,
1863, and has filled that office ever since. He has been justice of the
peace twenty-seven years, and for nine years superintendent of schools. He
was elected town representative in 1870 and 1880, and assistant judge of
Orange county court in 1874.
Norwich University conferred the degree of A. M. upon Judge Cobb in 1874. He
is a deacon of the Congregational church, and for many years was prominently
connected with the Harris Library as its librarian. He married, Nov. 1,
1861, Emily C., daughter of Hyde and Mary (Wiggin) Cabot of Chelsea, who
died April 14, 1872. December 19, 1873, he was united to Mary Jennie,
daughter of Eleazer and Mary (Cabot) Gardner of Thetford, by whom he had one
child: Gardner N. His second wife died March 17, 1879.
History of Vermonters and Sons of Vermont
NATHAN COBB.
Nathan Cobb, son of Stephen and Abigail (Chipman) Cobb, was born in Sandwich, Mass., August 13, 1763. He was fourth in line of descent from Henry Cobb, long a ruling elder in Rev. John Lothrop's church in Barnstable, Mass.
Nathan entered the American army in April, 1776, before he had arrived at the age of thirteen years. Was enlisted by Lieut. Stephen Fish, his brother-in-law, in a company commanded by Capt. Grannis, for the term of six months. He was immediately sent to Naushon Island, where the company was stationed for the purpose of guarding the fort and military stores at that place. While he was on the island a British tender ran under the guns of the fourt. A cannon was fired at her and the shot cut off her yard-arm. The vessel immediately "cleared out," leaving word at Martha's Vineyard, as we heard, "that the British flect would pay us for it."
Nathan's term expired after "Indian harvest," to use the term he used in his pension declaration, and he returned to his parents in Sandwich. In July, 1779, he re-enlisted, joining a company of minute men commanded by Capt. Joshua Toby, and called out to defeat the threatened attempt of the loyalists and refugees to Falmouth. The enlistment was for the term of three months. Nearly half this time the company was at Howland's Ferry, R. I., to which point it first marched, and about half the time at Falmouth. His brother Jacob enlisted when Nathan did, serving with him during the term, and was discharged at the same time.
At the close of the war Nathan bade adieu to his home and went to Randolph, Vt., where had settled his brother Jacob and his brother-in-law, Stephen Fish, mentioned above. Many stories had been told in the army of the wonderful richness of the soil "way up in Vermont." "Why, the very mountain-tops were fertile and you could get good crops as high up as you could get oxen and plough!" But Nathan did not like here and, in a little while, he made his way to Hanover, N. H., and there engaged in his occupation of blacksmith. The writer of this account heard him narrate that walking along the street, one day, he saw sitting at a chamber window a young lady, a stranger, attired in low dress with short sleeves. As he looked upon her it was impressed upon him, in a supernatural way, as he believed, that she was to be his wife. He soon ascertained that the maiden was Lydia Bliss of Lebanon, Conn., and then visiting her relatives, President Wheelock and the Pinneos in Hanover. A mutual!
attachment sprang up between these young people and the impression soon was realized,--Nathan accompanying Miss Lydia to her home in Connecticut and marrying her there. After their marriage, his wife resolved to be a help meet indeed, learned to perform some of the lighter work of her husband's trade, among other things the pointing of shoeing nails. Nathan held the office of deputy sheriff in this town nine years.
In 1805 he removed to Hartford, living upon a farm in Centreville until the infirmities of age came upon him. He died in this town March 24, 1845, aged 81 years, 8 months, 7 days. His wife, Lydia (Bliss), survived him only five days, dying at the age of 78 years, 8 months, 21 days. The remains of this aged couple were interred at the burying ground near "the Point." Nathan was tall and erect in form; a member of the Congregational church; in politics, a whig.
He had five children, all born in Hanover, namely: Daniel, who became a lawyer and settled in Strafford,VT dying in that town July 26, 1868, at the age of 81;1 Nathan, Jr., a blacksmith, whose life was passed in Hartford and who deceased June 3, 1847, aged 58; Samuel B., a merchant in Montreal, and then in New York city, where he died Aug. 7, 1829, at the age of 37; Lydia, who became the wife of David Landers of Hartford, in which town she died July 18, 1843, aged 49; and David Webster, an importer in Charleston, S. C. He died in that city Sept. 8, 1835, at the age of 34.

Subject: [Cobb/Cobbs] Ty COBB
Hi All:
I was just at an informal family reunion with my COBB relatives. As the
family historian, everyone had lots of questions for me.
One which I couln't really answer, but have a hunch about, is if we are
related to Ty COBB.
My initial reaction is no. We come from the Barnstable line. I suppose Ty
is from a southern line?
Does anyone know the ancestry of Ty COBB? If so, could you please send me a
brief outline?
Thanks,
Johnna St Clair

Greetings ya all -
I am still a bit under the weather. But wanted to pass this on to you
all, just incase anyone wanted to participate . . .
Would anyone care to help a college student with a survey on
genealogists?
This was sent to me thru another rootsweb list and asked to pass it on.

The Fullerton Genealogy Study
California State University, Fullerton
Nearly 60% of U.S. residents participate in some genealogical activities
with worldwide figures not readily available. Yet there is sparse
information about the millions of people
involved in this rewarding hobby and what needs are met by the pursuit
of one's ancestors.
A thesis project designed to address these questions is being conducted
at California State
University Fullerton. Interested genealogists and family historians are
being asked to fill
out a 20 minute survey online. All information will be anonymously
collected and no
identifying information about individual answers will be divulged. See
the survey at:
http://psych.fullerton.edu/genealogy
This research project is being conducted by Pamela J. Drake, a Master of
Arts student
in Psychology at California State University, Fullerton and is
supervised by William D. Marelich, Ph.D. Questions or comments about the
study may be directed to the researchers at: email:
genealogy_study(a)hotmail.com telephone: (714) 278-7052
Ms. Drake has just sent me a notice that I will be notify when the
summary of the results becomes available. . . . I wonder what kind of a
strange breed we will be shown as ? ?

The following url I came across at www.deadfread.com
I typed Cobb into the Name: field of the search page and this is one of the
two that it returned. It isn't anyone that I have in my tree (that I know
of), but I thought I recalled seeing the name Eula posted to this list at
some time or another and thought it might be of interest to someone. It is
marked Texas ca.1915
