I am in possession of the 1803 Family Bible of John B Cobb that I would like
to get to a family member. I bought it off eBay last year because I thought
some Cobb descendant should have it. I paid about $75.00 for it, and it is
in excellent condition. But, it is not my family line. BJ Atkinson says
the line if from New Jersey. If someone is interested let me know.

Does anyone on this list know how to look up the date that a person who
served in the Confederate Army died if they have one of the markers that was
given to them that showed the unit and state they served with?
I hope that makes sense...I'll word it a different way. My great-great
grandfather served in the Confederate Army. When he died his grave was
marked with a white marker that listed his rank and the unit he served in.
Somewhere there has to be a record of when that stone was placed, and
probably the date he died. Does anyone know how to find that date?

Surname: COBB, LESHER, HOTCHKISS, PUTNAM
-------------------------
HERBERT C. COBB, who has won for himself an enviable standing among the
prominent agriculturists of Spink county, is a resident of Harrison
township, where he owns a fine stock and grain farm of three hundred
and twenty acres.
Mr. Cobb was born in 1860, a native of Jefferson county, New York,
where his parents were also born. Our subject's father, Elijah Cobb,
was the son of Joseph Cobb, whose grandfather on the mother's side was
Clark Crandall. They were all New England people, and the great-
grandfather of our subject was a soldier and a pensioner of the war of
1812, while the great-great-grandfather was a hero of the Revolution.
Herbert C. Cobb was reared on a farm in his native county and received
his education at the common schools. He was the eldest of the family,
and did not receive the advantages which were later afforded to his
younger brothers. At the age of twenty years he left home and went to
Richmond, Illinois. Here he learned cheese making and butter making,
and worked at this business for three years.
In 1883 he went to Spink county, Dakota, and filed a pre-emption claim
to the northwest quarter of section 24, Harrison township. He built a
small shanty, 12 x 12 feet, in which he lived alone for six months. He
took a tree-claim in the fall of 1883 and a homestead claim about 1884.
All the worldly goods our subject brought with him to Dakota were a
trunk, clothing, and a little money. At that time many claims had been
filed and shanties were to be seen on every hand. He set to work with a
will to improve his property, and later took a homestead on the
southeast quarter of section 14, Harrison township, erected buildings,
and prepared to make it his permanent home. He has prospered in his
business, though in 1898, in April, he was burned out by a prairie
fire, losing, with the exception of his residence, all farm buildings,
together with six hundred bushels of corn, two hundred and fifty
bushels of wheat, his wagon, harnesses, etc. He has rebuilt and added
many improvements and conveniences. He now owns three hundred and
twenty acres of fine land; he cultivates two hundred and fifty acres,
one hundred and twenty-five of which is on rented land. He gives
considerable attention to cattle raising and in this line has been very
successful.
In 1880 Mr. Cobb made a trip to New York, and was there married to Miss
Olia E. Putnam. Mrs. Cobb was born in Jefferson county, New York, and
was reared on a farm. They have a pleasant and comfortable home, which
has been blessed by the advent of one child, Ray P. Mr. Cobb is a
member of the Modern Woodmen of America, and in politics is a
Republican. He takes an active interest in local political matters. He
was one of the supervisors chosen upon the organization of the
township, and has served as assessor for the past six years. He has
been chosen a delegate to numerous county conventions of his party, and
is popular with the people of the community and county.
I am looking for the parents of Noah Cobb, b. 1782 in North Carolina. He is
found living in Anderson County, S.C. on census from 1820 through 1860. He
married Nancy Mize, b. 1791, in South Carolina. Their children were
1. Amanda Lurilla Cobb, b. 4/22/1817 and d. 10/15/1893, m. James C. Broom,
b. 6/12/1814 in Anderson County, S.C., d. 2/5/1903 Banks Co., Georgia.
2. George W. Cobb
I suspect four other brothers and sisters, but do not have their names.
Thanks,
Jeanie Broome Johnson
