I am looking for information on a Fountain H. Cobb born about 1810 in VA per
1850 Butler Co., KY Census. Married to Sarah born about 1820 TN. Five
children listed: Frances Cobb, Mary A. Cobb, John L. Cobb, William M. Cobb,
and Thomas Cobb. Children born between 1840-1850 in TN. John L (Lannie) Cobb
was my paternal Grandmother father. If anyone has any information please get

I have been searching for eight months for John L. Cobb father (my brick
wall) and I would like to connect with anyone who might have information on
this line.

Hi Listers,
Just found this list so I thought it may be worthwhile to tag along.
I am strictly interested in COBB in the UK, especially Norfolk, unless somebody thinks there may be a possible link elsewhere.
Regards
Rob
Carleen,
I saw that you mentioned Christian names such as Howell and Rice as
being family names and I'm wondering about the use of Rice as a name for
3 different generations of my Cobb(s) family. I found info on a Rice
Cobb in the early 1800's but cannot connect it to my direct line. My
Cobb family was in Grainger Co TN early and in GA for a bit after that.
In 1844 my ancestor, Jesse Cobb (wife Nancy Reese/Reece), named one of
his sons Marion Rice Cobb. In the 1920's my grandfather named a son
James Rice Cobb after his brother Marion Rice Cobb. What I am trying to
find is where the Rice name came from to begin with. I do have a Rice
lineage from VA on my mother's "other" side of the family.
I am at a dead end on these Cobbs. I believe that Jesse was the son of
Joseph Cobb but have not been able to find proof. Now I am sidetracked
on the use of the name Rice as a Christian name. Do you have any advice
for me, other than giving up? Any leads are most appreciated.
By the way, Jesse Cobb's last name was spelled KAB on the TN 1850
census. I like to have never found it.
Happy New Year.

Dear Listers,
Since you have been very helpful with helping me determine the parents,
siblings of my Ebenezer B. Cobb d 19 June 1826 in Montrose, Susquehanna
County, PA. I now have questions about his parents and/or siblings.
Not yet proven, but I believe his parents to be Richard and Syntha (sic) Cobb
with children, Harriett age 25, Ebenezer age 24, Jaxon (sic) age 21, Manerva
age 17, Arlina age 15, Edward age 8 and Emily age 6. These appear on
Wyalusing 1850 census.
The death notice lists a brother Jackson and two sisters as survivors. No
first names for the sisters only Mrs. Mrs. Morris of Granville and Mrs.
Samuel Rogers of Montrose.
My questions are, does anyone know the first name of either of the sisters
listed and if or who Jackson married who was listed as living in Stevensville
in the death notice? Also if anyone possibly knows anything about Richard
Cobb and his wife such as her maiden name.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
Jan in Zephyrhills FL
P.S. I just had my son set up a web site for me for genealogy related
information. The link will is
http://myfamilytree.hypermart.net.
I too, have a "Pleasant" in my Cobbs line; Tandy Pleasant Cobbs, my
gr-gr-grandfather. In his name are two prominant Va families, Pleasants and
Tandys. I have not found any connection, so far, to either of these families.
There were other families that Cobbs reflect in the naming of their children.
Some because they did descend from these families and some, I think, just
took up the name because they were famous even then. Among them are the
Lewis, Meriweather, Howell, Waddy, Rice and others. In Campbell Co., Walton,
where there WAS at the time a Cobbs-Walton marriage. But much further back, a
Walton connection that seems to account for the name being used in the Cobbs
line earlier.
Of course, I am sure that some of you, like me, have a blank for some female
lines and the rational thing would be to look at some of the Christian names
for guidance. I just hope my ancestors were using their own family names and
not 'borrowed' ones.
I know this was not the subject, Bob. but I have been on the list a long time
and this is the first time there has been a discusion of 'our SW Va' bunch. I
have found that after 30 yrs looking at the records in this area, you have to
consider all these counties together, Bedford, Campbell, Charlotte, Amherst,
especially. Sometime from boundry changes, and then Cobbs had a habit of
either scattering out or owning land in several places.
I have a note in a letter to a Cobbs researcher many yrs ago, "sent him the
Bedford Co Ct records"...I must have ordered the films and abstracted some
back then. If so, they will be on some spiral notebook squirreled away here.
I will look.
Happy New Year to everyone,
Carleen

If your Robert Cobb is the father of Pleasant Cobb, I have looked for his
parents a long time, too. His wife's line has been traced 'way, 'way back to
the early hundreds A.D. Both ancestry.com and familysearch.com have it.
Dear Cobb List Group Member,
From time to time I have seen emails to this group asking about Ty Cobb's
genealogy. For this reason, I would like to announce the formation of a new
discussion group devoted exclusively to Ty Cobb. While the group will have
a broader focus than genealogy alone, I'm certain the there are members of
this list that can both contribute to and learn from this new forum.
After only a couple of weeks in existence, the Ty Cobb Discussion group now
has 16 members. The discussion threads include, in addition to Ty's
genealogy, his baseball career, his life and times, and his baseball
memorabilia. The group achieved a major breakthrough in its first week of
activity when Wesley Fricks, a nationally known expert on Ty Cobb, joined
the discussion. I have appended the announcement that I sent to the group
when Wesley joined. Please review this, and I'm sure you will agree that to
have the expertise of someone like Wesley available is really a valuable
resource to us all.
I would like to personally invite each of you to join this group, or at
least to visit the discussion and consider joining. Your membership is
absolutely free, of course. Options can be set to receive new postings by
email, or to receive a daily digest of postings by email, or to receive no
notification at all and just visit the website when you are interested.
Also, you need not disclose any information about yourself, except your
email address.
If you want to give us a try, you can go to this website and join up.
http://www.egroups.com/group/ty_cobb <http://www.egroups.com/group/ty_cobb>
Thanks for considering this exciting new group. If you have colleagues or
acquaintances who might also have an interest in this group, please forward
this announcement to them.

Moderator, Ty Cobb Discussion Group
P.S. If you would like to discuss the Ty Cobb Discussion Group before
joining, please feel free to email me directly.
ANNOUNCEMENT
December 24, 2000
I am very, very pleased to announce that Wesley Fricks has joined our Ty
Cobb discussion group! For those of you who don't know, Wesley is probably
THE most knowledgeable and well respected expert on Ty Cobb anywhere in the
country.
He was born in Royston, Georgia, Ty Cobb's hometown, and grew up only a
block from Ty Cobb's homeplace. Having grown up in the aura and
surroundings of Ty Cobb's legacy, Wesley developed a true passion for the
man. He has done literally years of extensive research on Ty, his career as
a ball player, and his life in general. He has amassed the largest
collection of articles on Ty Cobb anywhere - now containing over 3000
articles, most of which are pre-1950. This treasure of information covers
practically every aspect of Ty Cobb, even his family lineage all the way
back to the Civil War.
Wesley concentrates his readings and research in the early literature - that
representing what was written and said by the people who actually played
with or against Ty Cobb, or at least saw him play the game. Like many of
Ty's current fans, Wesley feels that the recent writings about Ty do not
present the full story. But, unlike most of us, Wesley has backed up his
opinions with the real facts, having studied and analyzed the original
source material.
Wesley has been a member of the Planning and Development Committee of the Ty
Cobb Museum since it was founded in 1998. Wesley appeared in the 1999
Baseball's All-Century Team video, being interviewed there as an expert on
Ty Cobb. In June of next year, Wesley will travel to Cooperstown to deliver
a well-researched presentation on Ty Cobb at the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Clearly, with these credentials, Wesley is a vast wealth of information.
And what's best of all is that he has joined this group to share his
knowledge with all of us.
Please join me is welcoming Wesley to the Ty Cobb Discussion Group!

,Henry A. 8 TX
,Mary B. 1 TX
Cobb, Rosetta 12 England

Coyens, Alfred 8 France
Bylfelt, Mary 22 Germany

This is H A COBB who married Pauline Eugenia MARIAN on 5/12/1840 in

This is also the same as Henry A Cobb--listed as First Settlers of Galveston
Co TX-- change conditional cert. April 11 1839 Harris Co. Tx 640.0 acres
Date of Uncond. 3 Dec 1841
I believe this H A Cobb might be the son or nephew of F R COBB
1850 Liberty Co TX:
COBB, Francis R. 65 Sea Captain 1000 England
,Elizabeth 51 England
,Pauline 3 TX
1860 Galveston Co TX:

,Donsena? 4/12 TX
Believe Henry HOLMES age 27 above is a relative of the COBB line--- his
father might be Jesse HOLMES who marr. Amelia Sibyl COBB.
Wife Mary above might be Mary Jane Slayback or Sarah Marie Brainerd....I am
unsure about this.
I assume that the name Pauline is used in this line of COBB as there is the
child Pauline who is living with F R...this might be a child of Henry A
Cobb-not living with them??? or from a brother of Henry A Cobb????
love any thoughts or explanations.
