Betty,
FYI
Martin
Martin,
The people in Alabama shouldn't count on Alexander being the son of
William Cobb I of Rocky Mount. I have seen a lot of research on him and
his
family and there was never a son mentioned by that name. There were
other
Cobb men in Tennessee and also Grainger County who I don't know. Some
may
have come over from Georgia and N.C. You said this family went to
William's
home. Do they mean the Home and museum. What did they find there to
support their theory? When was Alexander born anyway? Do they think he
was
born out of wedlock or something?
Thanks for your family line. One of my "grandmothers" in Grainger Co.
(Polly/Mary Coulter) was married to Thomas Busby before 1800. Then in
1800
she married Thomas Murray. We thought Thomas must have died suddenly,
then
finally a long lost cousin found a divorce for them. There was also a
John
Busby in the area then. I don't know what happened to Thomas or John.
Until later
Joanne
Note: Is there anyone who can definitely confirm for me who the children
of Wm Cobb were? I have the first being William b. 1746 in Bertie Co, Nc
and the last, TAbitha b.1768 in Washington Co, TN. I just want to double
check my facts. Thanks. BJ
Also can anyone clarify for me why DAvid Cobb and Martha Bryant named a
son Stancil if David's father m. Sarah Stancil as his second wife? Or am
I wrong here? I would appreciate any corrections. thanks. BJ

Spending a little time studying the Cobbs in my database and found my
self wondering about the following:
Joseph Cobb, son of Richard Cobb and Sybil Sheetz , where was he born? I
have England, but records for Richard show he was born in Aberdeen,
Scotland. If he was really Scottish as opposed to English and merely
born in Scotland, then Joseph is Scottish.
Irvin S. Cobb in his book, Exit Laughing, connects his line to Gideon
Cobb who m. a Dyer. This line goes back to Henry who m. Patience Hurst.
This Henry was born in England. So Irvin's claim that his lineage was
Scottish was in error unless there is some way to connect Henry with
Joseph.
Seems that in nearly all family lineages there were "three brothers" who
immigrated....Well, mention has been made that Henry came to VA with his
two brothers and moved up the coast to MA. Who were his brothers? I
have a brother for him named Benjamin who appears to have died in
England. So who were the others? If Henry was born in 1596 and was son
of Henry Cobb and Pleasant Redwood, then Joseph could not have been his
brother unless they had the same father. Now Joseph was b. ca 1588 and
would easily fit into the family with Henry if they had the same father.
But how would one figure it out? There was mention in other records of
the other brothers being John and James and that there were many
descendants in VA.
Now Henry and Patience named sons, John, James, Henry, Eleazer, GErshom
and sons by Sarah Hinkley were: SAmuel, Jonathan....so Henry could have
had brothers named John and James. Okay, where are they living in the
same time frame?
Think about this: Richard Cobbe, who was recorded in the records as a
student at Oxford, would have been born about 1555 and could be the same
Richard that m. Sybl Sheetz, for whom there were no records of a marriage
in Scotland in 1576...just quoting
In Joseph Foster's Alumni Oxonienses, 1500-1714 there are twenty Cobb,
Cobbs, Cobbe, Cobbes Alumni. But the only Richard Cobb of the right date
would appear to be: Cobbe, Richard, scholar Corpus Christi, 1572 BA: 1575
MA: fellow 1579; BD 1587; licensed to preach 1597; died 1597
A reputable London genealogist was asked to locate and translate the will
of the subject Richard Cobbe. Other findings of the London genealogist
regarding Richard Cobb's service with "Hwenry Champion's troop of a
hundred gentlemen" fighting for the Protestant cause on the continent
were: Calender of Patent Rolls 1563-66. In a grant of incorporation of
1564 to the Company of Merchant Adventurers for service to the Queen,
there is mention of a Richard Champyon, but no Cobbs. 1572-75, No Hnery
Champion mentioned, and the Cobbs mentioned wer from Norfolk and Suffolk
eng. families. Calender of State Papers. Searched 1566-74, there was a
Henry Champernowne who sent accounts of skirmishes and battles on the
continent. No Cobbs were mentioned. Report from Central Bureau Voor
Genealogie, The Hague, Netherlands. Checked the registers of the Old
Church in Amsterdam for the period 1565-1578. No marriage of a Richard
or John Cobb to a Sybil Sheets."
If one assumes that this Richard would have been born abt 1555 then he
could be a brother of Henry who m Pleasant Redwood and who was (according
to the info that I have, none of which have I personally documented) the
father of Henry the elder who m. Patience Hurst. The other children of
Richard, gfather of Henry the elder are:
Alexander, Richard, William, Nicholas, Mary, Margeret, Elizabeth,
Thomasine and Susanna.
Joseph who m E. Flinton named a son Nicholas. Henry the elder had a
gggrandson named Nicholas.....John Cobb, immigrant to Taunton, MA was a
grandson of Nicholas Cobb. There were some Nicholas' in Ambrose's line.
This leads????
Just curious about where these people connect if they do at all.
Now Henry Cobb, the elder appears to connect back to John Cobb of Cobbs
Ct, 1300. So does the Ambrose line, but I can't find a way to connect
Joseph Cobb of Isle of Wight to this line.
Anyone have any ideas?

In response to Julie Holland Cobb's query re Aquilla Cobb & Sarah Bagley -
They are my paternal grandmother's paternal grandparents. I don't have the

The 1840 census shows a John Cobb age 80-90 living alone. Is this
Pleasant Cobbs, who was born ca 1760 and would have been 80? His wife,
Mary Terrell had died in 1838 so would not have been in the household.
Anyone know who he was?
Also a Charles R. Cobbs, one male 30-40 and 1 femaile 20-30. This was
probably a young family, no children yet.
And a Thomas A. with a boy 5-10, a male 50-60 and a male 70-80, with no
females in the house.
Then an Elizabeth A. Cobb with a male under 5 and a female 20-30. Who
was this?
Thanks for any help. BJ

Fwd. from the Ga. List:
<< Perhaps one of the largest undocumented groups of Georgia Civil War
Soldiers
was Cobb's Legion. This group of combined Cavalry, Infantry, and Artillery
Companies was formed from Northeast Georgia Counties - primarily around
Athens and included many of the professors at UGA and professional men from
the Athen area.
It is unfortunate that no regimental history has been written, and to my
knowledge, no rosters of this group have been previously published. The
infantry companies alone numbered some 2,200 men and I have gotten ahold of
the rosters and am transcribing them. The Officers and Company A are now on
line (about 300 names). Others will be added over the coming days.
The new names are linked from my updates page of the Civil War in Georgia
site at
http://www.researchonline.net/gacw/updates.htm
or you can reach it from the main Civil War in Georgia URL
http://www.researchonline.net/gacw
Some interesting things I've found about this unit so far. They were in the
center of the confederate line at Fredericksburg, positioned behind the
stone
wall. They received numerous citations and awards throughout the war. Two
of the members of company A are identified in the rosters as "colored."
Gen.
Cobb was killed at Fredericksburg, and the cavalry subsequently became the
9th Cavalry Regiment, but they always retained the Cobb's Cavalry
designation
in honor of their fallen leader. A biography of the Cavalry commander,
Pierce M. B. Young was published by Univ. of Georgia Press in 1964, but this
is the ONLY extant book on Cobb's legion that I have found and it it now out
of print.
Cobb's Legion is the only unit I have found so far that had their own
veterinary surgeon.
If any of these names are yours, please drop me a note. I would like to
start compiling service records and biographies on these men.

Would like to know if there is anyone on this list researching the Cobb
family that lived in Lincoln County, Moore County, and possibly Bedford
County, Tenn. Am searching for the family of Palestine C. COBB who
married John Wiley Lawson and together they had 11 children. Would
seriously like to correspond with anyone researching the Cobbs of that
area.
Thanks so much.

Hello:
Can any one give me any information on an Rev. A.J. Cobb whose wife
Elizabeth is buried at Silver Shoals Church Cemetery in Banks Co., Ga.
His grave is unmarked but believe he is buried there with her in
unmarked grave.
Any help appreciated. I have already made a check of my "Cobb
Chronicles" and could not find anything to match him up with.
Thank you,
Karen T. Ledford/Toccoa,Ga.

OK, just back from a terribly long stretch at the local
suburban library.
New COBBs (at least to me)
From various Chicago newpaper archive booklets found at
library:
At Pleasant Grove, Mc Henry Co., IL on on Thursday, Aug 19,
1841 Mr. Spencer FLANDERS from Pekin, Niagra Co., NY and Miss
Caroline E COBB married. (Does not state which city in IL
Miss COBB is from)
At Warrenville, IL Tuesday (Sorry, I didn't write down the
month) 27, 1840
Mr. S. B. COBB of Chicago married Miss Maria WARREN of Chicago
At Coral, Kishwaukee Precinct, McHenry Co., IL Mr. Henry
THORNE married Charlotte M COBB, daughter of Whitman COBB,
ESQ. 6 Mar 1846
In the Chicago Democrat - Mrs. Esther Lincoln died of
billious fever on 28 Sept. 1834. She was the spouse of the
late Solomon LINCOLN and the dau of David COBB of Yorkshire,
Cataraugus Co., NY
In the 1830 IL census I found these COBBs:
Achilles County of SAN pg 164
Clinton CRA pg 003
John CRA pg 010
Jonathan MOR pg 115
