will include possibilities) Carolydia, Carolina, or Caroline Cobb. She
married John Wiley Lawson in Franklin County, Tennessee. I have not
been able to place her with any parents. Surely she had some. All
joking aside I need any help anyone out there can give me. I suspect
her Cobb family might have moved from Georgia to Moore County, Tennessee
with the Lawson family. This is only a suspicion. Have nothing to
verify this. Her husband, John Wiley Lawson's family moved from Georgia
and I thought maybe her family might have moved from there too. If
anyone has researched the Lincoln County, Franklin County, Moore County

I am still trying to find parents and siblings (anything at all) for Susan
A(manda?) COBB. I have found a marriage record, that I believe is that of my
ggg grandparents. Susan A. COBB married J(arett) V. JACKSON, July 27, 1856, in
Tishomingo County, MS. Surety was J.W. YOUNGBLOOD. I haven't been able to find
a family for her. According to my records, she was born in either MS or GA on
June 1, 1832, and died May 1, 1900 in MS. She and Jarett had the following
known children (as listed on the 1870 Tish. Co., census): Arariah(Azariah?),
Manverah, Manverah C., Ardena(my gg grandmother). There was also a Caroline
(no last name), 16 years old listed as housekeeper, in the household at this
time. Does anyone connect with this COBB?
Thanks,
Connie

Subject: Re: Clisby Cobb
Message-ID: <62f1e6e7.36c77e00(a)aol.com>
Hello All,
Since Clisby Cobb has been so much in the limelight lately, I thought I'd
insert something here. From time to time, someone refers to a Clisby
Cobb as
being descended from Ambrose Cobb of early VA and NC.
There are only two reasons I can think of where one could come up with
this
assumption. First, there was a Clisby Cobb in Lincoln Co, NC,
simultaneously
with the descendants of Ambrose Cobb(s). Second, they saw it in either
COBB
CHRONICLES, by John E. Cobb; or THE COBBS OF TENNESSEE, by Cully Alton
Cobb.
On the first point, LaRae Halsey-Brooks has done a good job of explaining
how
and why Clisby Cobb, a native of New Jersey, ended up in NC, and making
it
clear that he was NOT related in any way to Ambrose Cobb.
On the second point, if memory serves, the author of COBB CHRONICLES, in
his
introduction, makes it clear that he borrowed from Cully Alton Cobb's
book,
THE COBBS OF TENNESSEE. It is probably from the Tennessee book that he
also
saw a Clisby, Selena, et al, listed as descendants of Ambrose. So ....
Allow me to say a few words about THE COBBS OF TENNESSEE, by Cully Alton
Cobb;
Ruralist Press; Atlanta, 1968: I have been a researcher since 1962, and
have
probably at least seen every book ever published on the lineage of
Ambrose
Cobbs. And, even though Cully's book was published some 31 years ago,
for my
money it is still "the bible" for researching the early VA Cobbs. I have
been
blessed with circumstances that have allowed me to visit many of the
places
named in Cully's book, on both sides of the Atlantic, and have found
everything exactly where Cully said it was.
I have referred many people to Cully's book with but one caution: There
were
apparently two editions published! I have seen both. The first edition
names
Clisby and Selena as being descended from Ambrose. The second edition
has
editor's notes/corrections printed in the outer page margins; the result
of
consequent research since the first printing. This 2d edition corrects
the
first, in the matter of Clisby being an Ambrose descendant, corroborating
Ms.
Halsey-Brook's explanation.
I can only assume that the 2d edition of Cully's book did not get the
same
sales/distribution as the first, thus many people have only the first
edition
to refer to.

On Chart #57 of "Cobb Chronicles", by John E. Cobb, CHARLES RENESSELAR
WARREN COBB died 1845. There are children born after 1845. One of
those children is Charlotte Christler, born 1852. Could the middle name
Christler actually be her last name due to her mother having married
after Charles' death? There are also two more children born after
Charles' death.
Thanks,

Jo Ellan,
I believe the Nicholas Cobb in your lineage is one of three Cobbs known to
have immigrated to VA from England in the early 1600's, the other two being
Joseph Cobb and Ambrose Cobb. If so, he was born not in 1630 but about
1611 because he was listed as 24 years old on the ship "William and John"
which transported him, first to St. Christopher in the Virgin Islands in
1635. He migrated later to VA where received a land grant in the Isle of
Wight in 1663 for transportation of himself, his wife and three daughters.
Here are a couple of excerpts from books which may be of interest:
"The third Cobb, Nicholas, ... received a land grant for 202 acres on Pagan
Creek in 1663. His acreage was located near that of Joseph, and it was
here that he and his wife, Susan, and their three daughters -- Susan, Jane,
and Mary, along with a Jane Howard, then journeyed. Although Nicholas
appears to have been the wealthiest of the three Cobb immigrants, little
has been done concerning his background and descendants. It appears that
he might have been involved in slave traffic, or possibly commerce, since
he first traveled to the Virgin Islands and arrived there on Saint
Christopher Island in 1635 aboard the English ship, "The William" (*)
leaving from the port of London. It will be noted that some twenty-eight
years went by before he settled in the tobacco-rich lands of Virginia. His
will, recorded in 1686, places the time of his death in that year, and is
recorded in the Isle of Wight records in Volume 2 of the Will/Deed Book of
that county, page 249. Listed in his will are a son, Nicholas II;
daughters, Mary and Sarah."
SOURCE: Barbara Prince-Tharp, "Thrice Blessed". McClain Printing Co.:
Parsons, WV, 1981, p. 2.
-----------------------------
In view of the recent discussions on the Cobb-L forum, I am reluctant to
quote the following author, but I offer this, too, because it may provide
some small amount of additional information even though it mostly seems to
be a repeat of the above:
"In 1635 Nicholas Cobb was transported from the port of London aboard the
English ship "The William" (*) to St. Christopher Island in the Caribbean.
In 1663 he received a land grant of 202 acres on Pagan Creek in Isle of
Wight County near Joseph Cobb's Goose Hill Plantation for the importation
of his wife Susan, three daughters, Mary, Susan, and Jane, and Jane Howard.
In 1664, Nicholas acquired an additional 900 acres in the same area.
Although Nicholas was perhaps the wealthiest of the three Cobb immigrants,
genealogists have done little to uncover his background. His movement from
England, first to the British Virgins, then to the tobacco lands of
Virginia suggests initial involvement in commerce or slave traffic. His
noncupative will places his death in Isle of Wight County in 1686, as
recorded in Isle of Wight will deed book, Vol 2, page 249."

to copy publisher and date; ca. 1985 I think.)

(*) Listed as "The William & John" in Hotten's Ship Lists. See for example,

Another book which seems likely to have some information about Nicholas is,
Bruce Montgomery Edwards, "The Cobbs of Tidewater". Montgomery Publishing
Co.: Knoxville, TN, 1976.
Sorry I don't have information about more recent descendants of this
family. I have not followed this line because it is not mine. I only
offer the above as items which I have run across in my own research in the
hopes it may provide you, and possibly others on this list, with additional
clues.
Good luck.

Hello,
I am hoping to find other descendants from the COBB line from Nicholas
Cobb, 1630-1686. Information I have indicates Nicholas m. Susan Howard
of Isle of Wight County, VA. The line is as follows:
Nicholas - b. 1630
Edward - b. 1663 - VA
William b. 1695 - migrated to Edgecombe Co., NC
Edward b. 1727 - Pitt Co., NC
Edward 1748 - Edgecombe
JONAS b. 1781, m. Elizabeth Cherry, Edgecombe
Jonas Cobb had several children including my ancestor, Bettie Ann
(Elizabeth), b. ca 1825. Our family believes she is the COBB who
married WARREN ROBBINS, b. 1815, Edgecombe Co., NC. Marriage records
indicate they married in Noxubee Co., MS in 1838.
If any COBB researchers know this line of COBBS, I would be grateful to
hear from you.

I am seeking information about John Cobb who was born in Jamestown, NY (date
?) and died there in 1866. He was married until his death to Anna C.
McCormick, who was born in Jefferson Co., PA in 1844 and died in Syracuse, NY
in 1929. John and Anna had 4 children, one of whom (John Duke Cobb) was my g-
grandfather on my mother's side of the family. John Duke was born in 1866 in
Brookville, Jefferson Co., PA, and died in Falls Creek, Jefferson Co., PA,
where his mother Anna moved after her husband John died. Anna later married
Roderick MacDonald in Jefferson Co., PA, and had 10 children with him. John
Duke Cobb married Carrie I. Waite in 1888 in Brookville, PA. They had 8
children, one of whom (Pauline Anna, b. 1892, d. 1980) was my maternal
grandmother.
I have not been able to locate any information on John Cobb. Any help anyone
can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Dear Sister & family, I take pleasure of writing you a line to inform you
that we are all in good health at this time hoping these lines find you and
family enjoying the same blessings. We old people are yet able to labour for
our bread and keepe plenty. Our children are some what scattered but most of
them live near us. The oldest Nathaniel yet lives in Abbeville Co. South
Carolina and have gotten rich. He married a Huggans, they have had nine
children & lost two of them, & the second, Ellison married a Hutchens, they
have nine children. The third Sarah married Jas. Lummus. they have had nine
children one lost tho. Our fourth Edmond died in Abbeville The fifth Jas
Mitchell lives with us now, having married his murchandising. The sixth Mary
married Jas Davis, he is the son of Henry Davis who married our aunt. The
seventh Isaac married a Chandelear, they have four children; they live in
Carrol Co about 70 miles of[f]. The eight married a man by the name of
Chappelear, that is Frances, they have five children. The ninth Elizabeth
lives with us. The tenth Henry died. The eleventh Anny married a Bennett, they
have three children. The twelfthe, Andrew J. lives with us for he is nineteen
years old in October next. The most of our children are trying to get rich and
the balance are doing like most of poor people trying to keepe a plenty to
live on. & You told us what a fine country you have found. But we cannot
Bost[boast] of the soil of our country altho we have fine lands in Georgia but
we are more in hill country for health but can make plenty and have good
summer range. The county where we live is a part of the Cherokee Nation from
where we moved Indians last year. We lived amongst the indians three or four
years. We are about eighty miles from where we lived in Franklin Co. not far
from the State of Alabama. Our crops of wheate are verry good. Wheate is
woth[worth] from 50 to 75 cents per bushel. The prospect of corn and cotton is
good altho we have had a dry season. Corn is tolerable hie[high] owing to the
many hands engaged at the railroads, say from 75 cents to a dollar & 25 cents
per bushel, bacon 10 to 12 cents. Georgia is improving in railroads very fast.
We live not more than twenty five miles of one altho we live near the
mountains, but we dig down & out through mountains.
Page 2 Forsyth July 19th 1839
Georgia is progressing fast with her part of the railroad from Charleston to
Sincinatta [Cincinnati] in the State of Ohio. We are one hundred & fifty miles
from our market, Augusta, but will soon have our goods brat [brought] by steam
[train]. Our lands yeald[yield] about five to ten barrels of corn per acre,
from five hundred to one thousand lbs of cotton in the cotton parts of
Georgia. We have not had any late news from our old Brothers Edmond & Henry
but suppose if they had bin any death amongst them we would have heard. We
notice you request us to come and see you But we old people do not expect we
will ever be able to travel so far. We fear we will never see you except you
come to see us. We wish you to write to us on receipt of this letter direct to
Cumming, Forsyth County, Georgia. We will inform you something of mines in
this State. Georgia is rich in gold mines altho there are no hands of
consequence ingaged in the mines at this time owing to the price of labour on
the Railroads & lines. The gold mines are in Hall, Habersham, Lumpkin,
Forsyth, Cherokee, Cash Carroll Lumpkin Co. contains the best mines and we
have a mint in that county to coin the gold. The county we live in jion
Lumpkin south. Thare has been a vast of gold found in Lumpkin. Thare has bin
something like ten thousand hands engaged at one time and gold so common that
all classes used it in buttons, rings, ear drops, safe chains, gold watches as
tho it wasnot precious. Do not forget to write to us as we do not expect we
will have the opportunity of conversing personally with other, so will close.
Your most affectionate Brother & Sister.

Aunt please excuse our slothfulness of writing when I reed your letters in
Franklin. Uncle Henry told me he had written a great deal about the Convesaion
[conversation] and I thought I would refuse writing for a while and and delaid
two [too] long.

I may be of Henry Cobb of Barnstable, MA, if family tradition holds - Henry & Patience Hurst, John and Martha Nelson, Ebenezer and Mercy Holmes, Nathan and Joanna Bennett, and Nathan and Jerusha Harlow - Philip Cobb ends here.
Desperately need to find grave stone etc of Nathan cobb below to verify if he was the Nathan born of Nathan and Jerusha (Harlow) Cobb, born 21 Jan 1775 in Plympton, (Carver) MA according to Jerusha (Harlow) Cobb's Bible record. If so, I think this Nathan went from MA to Philadelphia and not to Vermont and Lewis Co., NY with the rest of his family. He moved up and down the coast as an iron worker but probably died in Philadelpha or Camden where his children resided. His son David married Katherine Spencer, the daughter of a schooner owner, which may be a clue as to how David and Kitty met. David Cobb was a carpenter.

William Alfred Cobb is not a decendent of Ambrose Cobb(s), as stated in the
Cobb Chronicles. I have seen the book, and it states that the lineage
with the broken dashes are not proven. Many researchers have a assumed
the relationship because Clisby, William Alfred, and the second Clisby
where all in the same area (Western NC - Lincoln, Burke, etc) around the
same time. William Alfred Cobb's line was researched in the 1950s and
not published in book form. As far as the research goes, it looks like
Ty Cobb's line was from Ireland. The story goes that Ty wanted a researcher
to prove lineage to the "New York Cobbs", but just the opposite happened,
and the family researcher became upset when it was found that the emigrant
was not so rich after all.
Thanks for clearning up the Clisby Cobb matter in the Cobbs of Tennessee!
