Jeanie and group!
I have a few lines of Cobbs which are either related to me or are allied
lines. In the material in your previous query I saw names and locations
that made me curious; surnames such as Mize (in my database there is a
Etta Auriole Mize [b. ?]- no parents- md. to a Joseph Ellison HOPE [b.
1877 possibly Forsyth Co., GA]); Broom (Broome - surname is related to
my Helms, Hargett & Stegall lines of Anson County NC - a NOAH BROOM [b.
?]md 1847 to a Luiza Stegall [b. 1823] Union Co., NC) and the following
Cobbs surnames individuals who either have SC in their data or had a
possibility of having roots in SC:
Cobb,Eliza Mary Birth: Abt 1812 ,SC; Spouse: Hinnard,John [I]
Cobb,John H. Wilch; Birth: 1832 ,,South Carolina;
Burial: Shiloh Cemetery,,Robertson County, TX; Spouse:
Mauk,Elizabeth
William Cobb b. no other information
MARRIAGE:Bef 1819
Anna MNU
-CHILDREN----------------
<< 1.Nancy E. Cobb md. a James Anderson Hope (b. in Pendleton
or York Dist. SC)
<< 2.Sarah or Sallie Cobb md. his brother: Ellison Hope (b. York
District SC)
<< 3.Hannah Cobb md. a James Anderson Hope
If any of the Cobbs of your line went to AR (primarily Yell County) I
might have one who might connect: George M. Cobb b. 1869 md. Minnie
Guerry.
Is there ANY chance that some of your material might connect with my
ELLISON and SALLIE COBB HOPE or any of the other names I've included?
I would also appreciate hearing about the "<smaller>famous Pendleton Four
- Samuel, Henry, John or Asa.</smaller>" I've not come across this
before.
Thanks so much,

<smaller>I am searching for the venerable Noah Cobb, b. 1782 in North
Carolina per the 1850 census of Anderson County, S.C. He was married to
Nancy, had a son named George, a daughter named Amanda Lurilla, as well
as four other children. He was a farmer. He is living close to a Henry
Cobb as well as a John Cobb and his son-in-law, James C. Broom, all of
Anderson County, S.C. Word of mouth is that wife Nancy was a Mize and
was born in South Carolina. I believe that he is a son of one of the
famous Pendleton Four - Samuel, Henry, John or Asa. It appears from
information recently come to me that Noah Cobb Sr. and Noah Cobb Jr. of
Caswell County, N.C. are off the hook as far as immediate family links.
Anyway, if there are charitable souls on this list who would like to
either further enlighten me, I would be grateful for direction.

To all of you good COBB researchers (and anyone who can help),
I am about to complete a Major milestone in the genealogy work. I am about
to produce my first document and have a question or two!
I am sending this message to the whole list as it may be helpful to others
who may have the same problem.
I am in the process of producing (finally!) this history. I have scanned
and embeded a bunch of both B&W and a couple of color photos. I will be
printing on my HP DeskJet about 20 copies (enough for grandchildren). I
know that the ink will smear especially the color prints.
Question: Does anyone know the proper way to "Fix" these pages? Or has
anyone else faced this problem?
If I try to use a copier the quality of the photographs deteriorate. The
pages with only text can be copied and in that way those pages will be
preserved against possible damage do to smudging.
Another question that I would like to put before this group is what is the
best way to bind such a History. I believe that the document will have
about 75 pages, not including the cover and preface, etc. I have looked at
the Velo binding which is quite reasonable in cost, $2-3 each. The cover
will be B&W text plus a sketch.
I would love a discussion of this since I am in the final stages of the
history itself.
Take care and have a good day!,

I have the marriage paper and it is hard to read it is so faded.
Allen A. Burton married Sophroni (the end is faded and could well be and
A) at Mt. Lebabon, Ky August 14, 1866.
Allen A. Burton was a 1st Lt Co. K 20th Ky Regiment, died 10/24 1912.
Sophroni(a) had I believe 2 brothers James Wm. born 1842 and Nathan . I
think she was born in 1843.
Sophrinia's father was John W. Cobb and her mother was Sally Hunter of the
Hunter family who were the first settlers in Jessamine Co. Ky.
Sophronia and Allen had a daughter, Minnie born 11/30 1878 died 12/26 1957.
Minnie married Lindsey House.
The more I look at the name and the spot there could well be an A at the end.
Does any of this match anything you have?
Thanks so much.
Nancy
Mary Elizabeth Cobb was a sister to my great grandfather, James Anderson Cobb. Although I do not have birth or death dates I am guessing she and James lived somewhere between 1840 and 1920.
Mary married a man named Pray. He was a foot doctor. They had two children: Florence and Arthur. Mary Elizabeth and Dr. Pray got divorced.
After her divorce "she became the first manicurist in America. She learned the business from some friend who had been abroad. She opened her first place of business at 69 West 23rd, right off 6th Ave. She was also in the hair dressing business. Then when her business grew, she moved across the street to 74 West 23rd St. That was when all the high class Dept. stores were down around there. I remember that Mc Iverrys was right next door. She had a beautiful place, a big place and only catered to the 400, the Whitneys, Vanderbilts, Goulds and all rich people. Well poor people at that time could not afford those things. And I remember that she at one time, when I was a kid, made the red polish for the nails in our barn. " (I am quoting a letter from a grandaunt).
Someone did a lookup for me in the 1897 and 1900 NYC Trows Directory and found Mary Elizabeth Cobb listed as a Manicurist whose business was at 74 West 23rd and her home address was 101 West 77th.
Thanks to the lookup I now know that I am dealing with a true story with a lot of research still to do to uncover the rest of the story. Sounds like a good plot for a book.
If anyone has any information about Mary Elizabeth COBB, James Anderson COBB or Dr. PRAY, please contact me.
