I am looking for information on Joseph Cobb, born around 1740, probably in
Georgia or SC, died around 1786, married Rachel, and had at least one son -
Ezekiel born in 1765, received a land grant in Georgia in 1786 and later
moved to the Mississippi Territory. I am searching for Joseph Cobb's
parents and would appreciate any information which might help.

"No doubt my great-grandfather (Noah Cobb, II) met his wife-to-be, Jane
Dill here, one of the Dills (Reuben) was referred to as the fireside
preacher. Aunt Polly Strader is buried in the Cobb cemetery. She, we
believe was the sister to our great- grandmother, Jane Dill Cobb. Aunt
Polly died of smallpox and fear of small pox at the time was so great,
for some reason they buried her at night. Our great-grandparents home
stood on the edge of our little farm and near the present home of Jeffery
and Susan Cobb McKinney.
"According to the will of my great-great-grandfather, Noah Cobb I, he had
seven sons and two daughters. Henry Cobb was one of the older sons. He
settled near Bethel Methodist Church. The house he lived in still stands
and is owned by the Law family. Samuel Cobb settled below Yanceyville.
James (Jim) Cobb another son moved south-ward into southern Caswell, some
of his descendants moved into Alamance Co, one being Allie Cobb of
Burling-ton. My great-great-grandfather gave the land for Bethesda
Church. At one time it was called Cobbs Chapel. Some of his sons left
the section and moved to TN.
"I am told the name Cobb is familiar today in Whitehaven section of
Memphis. Not all the Cobs were as fortunate as John Blackwell Cobb, son
of Henry. My grandfather Archibald Cobb fought in the Civil War. When
he got out he married Frances (Fanny) Canaday. He died when he was only
49 years old, leaving my grandmother with five or six children, the
oldest being around 15, and with the farm to look after. Uncle Burns
told me before he passes away that my grandmother would go to Mr.
Philemon (Philly) Walker and Mr. Hiram Harrelson for advice and to borrow
money. She sold most of her tobacco in Reidsville, much of it with MR.
Jack Pinnix.
"When Uncle Burns and Aunt Fannie married they started housekeeping in a
kitchen that stood out from the Ar-chie Cobb house. He said after he
married and bought the necessary essentials he had 25 cents left. Later
on Mr. Tom Lambeth loaned him money to buy a good farm in the Iron Works
community. He prospered in raising to-bacco. Later two of his sons went
to work for R. J. Reynolds in Winston-Salem and did well there.
"Several of the Cobbs in later years moved into Rockingham Co, also, some
of the Somers family. Sometime in the early 1800s some of the Somers
family moved into TN. Most of the Strader family moved into the Ruffin
and Ore-gon Hill area of Rockingham co. The Dill family moved out of
Caswell and as far as I know there arent any Dills living in Caswell.

The Noah Cobb Family
"Henry Cobb or Kobb came to eastern Guilford Co, from Germany in 1740.
His wife Catherine came in 1738. They left Guilford between 1740-1777
and settled in western Caswell which was then Orange Co. This place was
called "Cobbs Shop" and it was near the present David Doyle Home.
Picnics were held here for many years. These early Germans who came to
America were known to be Calvinist through not of the usual Scottish
Presbyte-rian groups which settled in the region.
"The original Henry Cobb was the father or grandfather of Noah Cobb who
bought the land from Nathaniel Hart of Hillsborough and built his house
on it in the back of what was once Harts Chapel and is now the Bethesda
Pres-byterian church. Noah sold his home to Mr. Pickard who was a pastor
at the church for many years I the mid-1800s and then moved back to a
house near the present Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church. He may
have gone to live with a nearby son.
"According to his will, Noah had seven sons and two daughters: Henry, who
married Martha Nunnally and went west in 1830; Joseph who married Nancy
Jennings; John, who married Jane Brackin; Robert; James who is buried in
Bethesda Cem; and Samuel. Henry and Martha had a son, Henry Nunnally
Cobb and a daughter, Ann E. or Nancy, who married Lafayette Blackwell.
There are many other descendants, some in other parts of Caswell and
Rockingham. There was a Noah Cobb II who married Jane Dill, daughter of
Reuben Dill who may have been Noahs grandson. This Noah was the
grandfather of W . Fred Cobb who gave me this information and who lived
in Southern Caswell. HE also gave me the names of many of the German
families who settled in Guilford and Caswell Counties.
"Some Cobb marriages I have noted: Samuel to Bettie Barton, Henry to Mary
Howard, Melinda Cobb to Archibald Hubbard, Louisa Cobb to Abraham Womack,
John Wilson Cobb to Ellen King, Martha Cobb to Nat Gardener; the
Brackin-Cobb Cemetery has some of these couples, the oldest grave being
John Cobb, b. 1761 and died at 75 years; his wife Jane Brackin was a
daughter of Samuel and Jane Dixon Brackin or Bracken.

My records don't show a Judah Cobb as one of James' 13 kids.
Looking for family of Francis M. Cobb. He was born February 17, 1835 and
died July 24, 1903. He married Martha A. Clement, who was born February 3,
1843 in VA. Martha died August 31, 1927 in VA. She was the daughter of
Joseph J. Clement and Mary Ann ???.
Their children:
1. Luther Cobb married Lula Brooks
2. J. Marion Cobb born 1869 died 1937
3. Carrie Delilah Cobb born February 15, 1872 married Milton Scholl,
October 5, 1892.
She died May 4, 1953 in Shamrock, Callaway Co., MO.
4. Edmund Cobb born February 16, 1875 and died December 22, 1958. He
married Stella P. McCowan.
5. Elizabeth Cobb born 1877 died 1957. Married Curb Brooks

Mary Elizabeth Cobb was my great grandaunt, which means she was a sister to my great grandfather, James Anderson Cobb. Although I do not have birth or death dates I am guessing she and James lived somewhere between 1840 and 1920.
She married a man named Pray. He was a foot doctor. They had two children: Florence and Arthur. Elizabeth and Dr. Pray got divorced.
After her divorce "she became the first manicurist in America. She learned the business from some friend who had been abroad. She opened her first place of business at 69 West 23rd, right off 6th Ave. She was also in the hair dressing business. Then when her business grew, she moved across the street to 74 West 23rd St. That was when all the high class Dept. stores were down around there. I remember that Mc Iverrys was right next door. She had a beautiful place, a big place and only catered to the 400, the Whitneys, Vanderbilts, Goulds and all rich people. Well poor people at that time could not afford those things. And I remember that she at one time, when I was a kid, made the red polish for the nails in our barn. "
Someone did a lookup for me in the 1897 and 1900 NYC Trows Directory and found Mary Elizabeth Cobb listed as a Manicurist whose business was at 74 West 23rd and her home address was 101 West 77th.
Thanks to the lookup I now know that I am dealing with a true story with a lot of research still to do to uncover the rest of the story. Sounds like a good plot for a book.
If anyone has any information about Elizabeth, James or Dr. Pray, please contact me.

Henry of BArnstable.

Question, who are these Edmund Cobbs, and where are they related to the
Andersons? The names of the Anderson children are the same as those
given to the Cobb descendants of Nathaniel Cobb who died 1785 in SC. I
believe that Andrea said that there were quite a few connections between
the Anderson and Cobb families. Who has knowledge of these connections?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I am searching for any information about Richmond Cobb b. 1817 (probably
in NY) and died May 17, 1877 in the Town of Poland, Chautauqua Co., NY.
He was married to Marie (Mary) Fairbanks. Their childrem were Nathan,
Eliza, Charles and Clarence. There are many Cobbs in this area of NY,
and as yet, I don't know how this Richmond links with any of them.
Richmond is my ggg grandfather. I have more information on the family,
but ,"Who is Richmond's father?" is my ongoing question.
Any help will be appreciated.
