Hi fellow "Cobbsters",
I just want to say how impressed I am with the way all of you responded to
my recent post re: "THIS LIST". As is usually the case, immediately after
I posted my "2 cents worth" I wondered if perhaps I should have kept quiet
and just kept deleting! I'm sure many of us have seen what can happen on a
list when people don't agree - they can get downright nasty!
But - I've had several personal e-mails as well as those I've seen on the
list and while everyone might not agree with me, you were all so nice!
It's nice to see someone can express an opinion without getting jumped on.
We need more people like you guys on the other lists!
Susan.
Richard,
you either have to download the attachment and save it in a file on your
mail program if it will let you (mine will NOT) or you have to SAVE it in a
file (like in word perfect) and read it later.
However, there are so many different "texts" that send the files from
different programs, I have found that sometimes wordperfect cannot
"decipher" or convert them to a text that it can display.
That happened to me just last nite with an attachment someone sent...I
couldn't read it no matter what. I finally had to just erase it.
I am not a computer expert, but I think that 2 people have to have some kind
of compatibility in their systems for attachments to be sure to work.

All,
I was just accused of stealing someone's information because my messages
were edited. Plus a few folks are ticked off that people are being CCd and
they can't follow the thread.
I have been on several lists and on the Internet for over 10 years never
experienced anything like this.
Its a shame that people cannot get along.

Don't know if this will help or not, but there was an Enoch Cobb 39 on
1850 Forsyth Co., GA census(DU847,FU847,p.205) with Margeret 23, Peter 19,
Robert 15, John 12, Mary 9, Nancy 9, Thomas 7, Samuel M. 2, Martha 1, and
Alfred P. 2/12. Enoch b. NC, Margeret b. SC, all others b. GA. Family
adjacent to James Cobb 80 b. GA and Elizabeth 80 b. SC (p.206). There are
tons of 1850 Gordon Co. Cobbs, most with SC birthplaces.

Hey guys,
We've added quite a few new members lately and I think it would be very
beneficial to run our lines again. So, why not post the person you are stuck
on. Perhaps, someone out there knows the
answer! Or how about any will records or other records that you have that
might be helpful! Anyone out there with census indexes?

Here is an example of the usefulness (?) of seemingly tangential material:
I waded through the CLISBY Cobb discussion here for several days, and only now find out that he was descended from the early Plymouth Colony COBBs, as I am via Maine:
Henry (1)>Jonathon>Samuel>Benjamin>Benjamin>Geoge>Henry>Hazel
(The last having been my grandmother SHANNON)
Now I am interested in the Cobb-WINSLOW connection, as the Winslow family appears to go back to Edward III of England. Having been lured down the proverbial primroses concerning royal descent via the WHITNEY family, I am eager to confirm the Winslow line (via the BURGESS family on my mother's side - another surname that has no list yet), and now have some networks for doing so. (I have not seen a WINSLOW list or URL yet.)
We are all connected, way back somewhere, after all, regardless of your version of creation. Cheers, all !

Winslow line, as it has been sent to me, can be found in "Ancestors of Ida May McCoun" - they all have LDS numbers, but I did not know enough to import the "Sealed to Parents" etc. fields, which must have a much higher standard of proof?
Barbara,
I agree with you 100%.
Different people may be talking about a different thread pertaining to the
same lineage, and a much more complete picture is gained if you look at
everyone's input.
I personally am grateful to everyone on the Cobb list who has tried to help
me and has shared info, even when it has turned out to be a dead end.

Susan,
No! It isn't better. I understand your concern, everyone is
busy. But if something is irrelevant to you, just delete it. It may
be VERY relevant to someone else who would otherwise never see the
information. The objuect of a list in my opinion (whar I personally
want as a subscriber) is the most information possible and that
includes much more than reading queries. Comparing notes is invaluble
information and should be online.

Regina,
The parentage of Rachel COBB and Clisby COBB is confirmed in multiple
published references - among them:
1. 'Men From Morris County, New Jersey, Who Served In The American
Revolution',
by Barbara Hoskins (for the Morristown Public Library Bicentennial)
"COBB, Clisby -- baptized 6-3-1752. Served as a private in Capt. Josiah
Hall's
Co. from Denville in Morris Co., NJ militia (S-543) He lived in Hanover
Township.
Son of John and Rhoda COBB."
2. [same book as above] "COBB, Samuel -- baptized 6-3-1753. Served as a
private
in Morris Co., NJ militia (S-543) He was son of John and Rhoda COBB of
Hanover, brother of Clisby."
3. The State of North Carolina put out a series of county history books - in
the
History of Ashe/Allegheny County (where Rachel COBB and William HALSEY,
Jr. lived), a full genealogy of this branch of the COBB family is given.
(don't have it
at hand - will give it verbatim later, if you'd like.)
Actually, discovering the North Carolina book some years ago is what gave me
the 'breakthrough' in this line, and the rest of the research is well covered
in histories of NJ back to Taunton, MA were the family includes COBB, SMITH,
ROBINSON, HACKIT, WILLIAMS, PENNIMAN, WATSON, SAVIE, HYND, BEACH, ELIOT,
DEIGHTON, HICKS, WINSLOW, and BASSETT.
If this is your line, let me know. If not, I do have some material on a
branch who came directly to Virginia in 1600s.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
(thanks, the name is easy to pronounce {erin} but hard to spell!...get it ALL
ways)
