I'm hoping that someone who reads this list can help me learn what the
given name is of a man having the surname COATS. I do not know what the
man's given name was, nor the dates of his birth or death in the first half
of the
1800s. Searching for someone without having a given name isn't conducive
for success.
The meager info I know of this man is that he married and fathered children
with wife Alatha Johnston (1802 -1878) in TN, but I don't know where or
when. The couple had two children together, Elizabeth b: 1833, and Robert
H. b: 1835. Mr. Coats is said to have died in 1835, about the time of the
birth of their son, leaving Alatha to care for their two very young
children. After Mr. Coats death, the widow Alatha can be found on the 1837
Tax List for Perry County, TN. Her name was recorded as "Lotha Coats".
About 1840, the widow Alatha Johnston Coats married Eleazer Burton, although
no license to document their marriage has been found. The union of Alatha
and Eleazer Burton produced five sons, including two sets of twins, who grew
up with the two Coats children. The Burton couple lived a long life
together in Perry County, which later became Decatur County.
I'm hoping someone may remember having a Coats ancestor with a wife named
Alatha, but called Lathy or Lotha. Possibly someone has Alatha and Mr.
Coats' son Robert (b: 1835) listed on their family tree. Any thread
which possibly could be connected to this family would be most appreciated.
Thank you. Fran in CA

be more than one Robert William Coats. Johnn W

I would like to find deeds and papers here...possible slave sales, etc
on this Edw. Holmes sr and jr...and Jos. Belt? (lots of the surname
Bell back then) That might contain the name that the land was purchased
from..."or a deed to"......but I found this surname on a census before
and posted it on the county list and was told, by someone who had other
documents, that it was "Coots" Could be a variation..I suppose. My Abner
Coats is on the 1850 census, in Fayette Co Alabama ...transcribed online
as "Coah",so the t s looked like an h to somebody.I never did go get
actual film...but the 1850 census in Alabama had lots of mistakes..but
one thing I do believe, the Coats and the Coates are truly different
families. Stella
Ok, this is a sorta transcription of the listed Robert Coats of Prince
George MD whoses name it appears is spelled Coots in the original
document, it appears he has a son named Randolph Coots, deceased
daughter Sarah Hay and her son Robert Hay is named in the will as his
grandson. He also appears to have had two wives named Mary...oh,

I am looking for some help. I have posted on here before looking for

I have found her father in the 1860 US Fed. Census. His home was Howard,

suggestions on finding his wife's name and more about this family? I have searched
