I am a descendants of John and Henrietta Coates Bankston. They named on of there sons John Jacques, so you know I am trying to connect to Thomas and Beulah. I have been doing some research and find something that I thought others might like to see. Some where down the line maybe it could help with a connection. I have no prove of who Henrietta Coates (1760-1837) parents were.
I found this in a book at the history center in Salt Lake City. This book was, Beaufort County, North Carolina, Deed Book I, 1696-1729, records of Bath County, North Carolina, by Allen Hart Norris. It says no. (848) Ties with Virginia and Philadelphia. Capt. James Beard was familiar with the Virginia coast and the city of Philadelphia when he was the master of the James, sailing between Virginia and New York. Teaches Island lay north of Paramore Island on the East Side of Accomack County, Va. (260) This now appears to be Cedar Island. (261) In 1717 Black Beard and Capt. Benjamin Hornigold cleaned their ships on the coast of Virginia. (262) Shortly after taking the Oath in the summer of 1718, Black Beard visited Philadelphia, a place he reportedly had visited many times and where he was accustomed to being received. (263) Whether or not there may be family connections in Pennsylvania is unknown. One of the women who reported dealings with him was Mrs. Beulah Coates. (264) Scotch-Irish immigrants from Northern Ireland poured into Pennsylvania and many other colonies in the years following the Siege of Derry in 1689. It is unknown whether or not there is a connection between Pennsylvania and the South Carolina or Scotch-Irish Beard family to which Capt. James Beard was most likely connected.
No. 263 says Lee, pp 78-79, then no. 264 says Lee, pp 78-79. Beulah, born in Ireland, was daughter of Thomas Jacques of Bristol, England. The family was in Pennsylvania by 1696. She married Thomas Coates, who died 29 4 1741 (Willard Hess. Quaker Biographical Sketches. 1972) Early North Carolina records show a Coates Creek off Neuse River.
I came home and find this book by Lee. The book, Black Beard, The Pirate, A reappraisal of His Life and Times by Robert E. Lee. On pages 78-79 we have this Mrs. Beulah Coates, (once Jacquet-this was the name of the Dutch governor in Delaware, in 1658,) the grandmother of Samuel Coates, Esq.., late an aged citizen, told him (Coates) that she had seen and sold goods to the celebrated Black Beard, she then keeping a store in High street, No. 77, where Beninghove owned and dwelt - a little west of Second street. He brought freely and paid well. She then knew it was he, and so did some others. But they were afraid to arrest him, lest his crew, when they should hear of it, should avenge his cause by some midnight assault. He was too politic to bring his vessel or crew within immediate reach; and at the same time was careful to give no direct offense to any of the settlements where they wished to be regarded as visitors and purchaser, &c...
This gives me reason to wonder if some of Thomas and Beulah's family made there way to N.C. and would like to find more information about this Coates Creek off the Neese River.
Hope some of you enjoy this little story of Black Beard and his connection with the Coates family. Pat

Subject: Coates Family in Philadelphia
Good Morning,
First ~ Thank you for all your hard work on the Coates website and
for making your information public. I came across your site while
doing research into my Coates ancestors in Philadelphia, Pa.
I am descended through John Coats (Born 1684 in England ~ Died 1760
Phila. Pa.) This John Coats was married to Mary Hale (Hayl, Hall) and
their daughter Hannah Coats 1725-1761 married Richard Dennis who owned
a shipyard in Colonial Philadelphia. In the 1790 census Richard Dennis
appears next to Hannah's brother, Warwick Coates who also owned a
shipyard. I believe John Coates father was also a John Coates (Born
England ~ Died 1729 Philadelphia) who was married to Jane Sissum (who
2nd marriage was to James Clemson.)
Of special interest to me was your information posted on Old Coats
Burial Ground at 3rd & Browne Sts. in Phila. Those bodies were later
moved to Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. I spent a day last week
taking photos of the Coates Memorial marker there and of some later
Coates tombstones I found there. If you have any interest in posting
the photos, let me know and I will send you jpegs of them.
Again, thank you for all your hard work on the site and for sharing
it. I was able to find my John Coates and read a copy of his will on
your site. With Best Regards, Deb Wilson

The 1810 census for Amherst County, Virginia has a Jeremiah Coats as a head of a household
which included:
1 male under 10
2 males 10-16
1 male over 45 (presumably Jeremiah)
1 female under 10
2 females 10-16
1 female 26-45 (his wife?)
1 female over 45 (mother of one of the two?)
Is anyone familiar with this family?
Regards,
Paul Coats
