Connie,
Orrin is brother to my decendent Benjamin Coats. I've been trying for quite some time to tie these brothers (along with Abner) to an earlier generation without success. I have joined the Coats DNA project and have tied in with a few others in the Rowan NC group and I know there are several theories as to who we all connect but nothing proven yet. Orrin and Benjamin did migrate to Illinois around the 1820's. It has been quite some time since I've been actively pursuing this interest (work, school, family, etc) but would be interested in sharing information to see if we can finally make that elusive next step.

Connie, and Brian, and list, I am trying, too, to get these Rowan
siblings together...I have Cicily/Sisily Coats married my
grgrgrandfather, William Willis Feb. 1810 in Rowan Co, with Abner Coats
as bondsman . My Willis family left there for TN before 1820.(had two
children in TN, that I have found)..and came into Shelby Co Al. in
1830's and stayed till death. I find an Abner Coats in Fayette Co Al
about the same time,(1820, 30, 40, 50, census) says born in N.C abt
1782. So we need to find an older Abner than you all have. He was
married to an Elizabeth who says born in S.C so Abner must have gone
from N.C while young to S.C with that Coats migration and married
Elizabeth and had first child there in early 1800's named Elizabeth Ann
before he came on to Al. I think Cicily and Abner are brother and sister
since she was b abt 1790. Stella
Still looking for the parents of Orrin Coats who married Elizabeth 1826 in
Rowan Co. NC. Believe they are the Orrin Coats family in the 1830 Lawrence
Co. IL census. The one son I am sure of his Alexander. I believe their
other children were Abner, Elizabeth, William, Benjamin and James. But I
have not proved the connection. If Benjamin is Alexander's brother, he
(Benjamin) may be the husband of Harriet Wilder, again no proof. I think
Orrin's wife, Elizabeth, may also be a Coats. Their marriage bond was by ?
Elliott, first name eludes me right now. There were ties with the Coats and
Elliott families in NC.

I have found an Irving W. Coats in Ontario County New York....he is on
the 1880 census records and he appears to have died about 1911, not
sure where...
Anyone familiar with this group...
http://coatscensus.blogspot.com/2007/03/irving-w-coats-1880-new-york.html
My DNA group has an Irving Coates in it born about 1830 but thought to
have died about 1884...however, there is also a William Coats in this
same location that died about 1884....this is the only Irving Coates
I've found in the census records that would have been born about the
right time for this Irving Coates as well...
There is an early James and John in this area...the James Coats is on
the later census records as Jefferson Coats, full name also listed as
James T.J. Coats...James/Jefferson's father was born in Connecticut...

The National Archives has plans to raise, quite unreasonably, their
costs for many documents.
The cost for a full CW pension is currently $37. These files are a
gold mine of genealogy information.
They are also planning to raise the rates for many other types of file copies.
For all of the good it might do, comments are due at NARA by April 27th.
Follow the link in the article.
Please pass this on to any of your other lists.

(2) Federal Census requests - NATF Form 82 - 25.00
(3) Eastern Cherokee applications to the Court of Claims - NATF Form 83 - 25.00
(4) Land entry records - NATF Form 84 - 40.00
(5) Full pension file more than 75 years old (Civil War period) - NATF

Larry, please know you have my deepest felt condolences on the loss of
your Mother. And please take care of yourself,...do as your doctors
say...they can do wonders, a Minister I know, age 77 has five
stents...he is very active, daily. Makes public talks and is on the
hospital board.,so you will get back there. We will be thinking of you,
you know you and I have a very special family connection, besides our
friendship! Stella
Hi John,
Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining about the results, per se<g>, as I
am not quite ready to join the ancestors.
But I have already noticed that NOW when I do my two-mile run I am not
nearly so out of breath and looking for excuses to stop! (and the doc said I
had a 95% blockage in one of the important arteries! But I never had any
symptoms....)
Anyway, I suspect my problem is largely genetic as my grandfather Coats died
in 1975 of a heart attack....however, before the "big one" that did him in,
he had already had 8 others. One tough old bird he was.
Anyway, while this has not a thing really to do with genealogy per se, it
does speak to the fact that we should probably all be more aware of the
diseases that carried off our more immediate ancestors....."forewarned is
fore-armed" as the saying goes.
Larry

Oh, Larry, indeed distressing to hear about your mother...wow...and
then you...yep, time to take it easy...
And yes, I do believe the DNA did a number on us....:) The other
problem I have with doing research is a lack of resources in those New
England states via the Web!! I just have been going through some
early census records as well and I have to tell you about the 1860s
all of sudden lots of immigrants showing up in that year, England,
Wales, Scotland etc...I just wish we could get a larger group
participating in our DNA project...particularly those out of PA, VA
and the NE part of the US...oh well, in time...we've come a long way
with this family...so we might have to leave it to the next generation
that will probably insist those government records be put online....:)
In the mean time...we'll just keep our eyes peeled....and you take
care...not to worry, we'll find something eventually....:)

Becoming a grandmother is wonderful. One moment you're just a mother.
The next you are all-wise and prehistoric.
