Coats man I'm looking for who married Alatha Johnston or Johnson, lived only
a very few years after they married. Do you know if you have a Coats man
who this sounds like it might be?

that's the Coats I'm searching for. The Mr. Coats I'm seeking would have
been born in the late 1790's to 1800, then died between 1833 to 1839. With
a male child named Robert, possibly this was his name as well.

I ran across this information for Hezekiah COATS in the Probate files
in the Court House in the town of Corydon, Harrison County, Indiana.
July 15, 1833... Samuel COATS administrator.
The Probate inventory for Hezekiah COATS was filed the 15th Day of
Sept. 1833 in the Clerks office, Harrison Co. IN.
The Estate Sale was held Oct. 19, 1833.
These are the names of the COATS people who bought items from the sale.
Samuel COATS, Lycinda COATS, Daniel COATS & David COATS.
There was no Will that I could find for Hezekiah listed in the record
books.
I hope this little bit of info will help some of you who have posted
about this person.
I'm still looking for the parents and/or any siblings of my 4th great
Grandfather Abel COATS born 1787 Stonington CT. married Betsey PALMER.

As far as I know he died in TN but I have no info on Mr. Coats at all.

Barb, from what you mentioned about your Coats ancestors it doesn't appear to be connected to the unknown Coats man who married Alatha Johnston. My quest goes on.........
What websight in Wrightsboro, GA are you referring to? Fran in CA
Fran,
I have a James Coats with a daughter, Elizabeth. James died in Wrightsboro,
Georgia around the end of the Revolutionary War. Elizabeth married Thomas
Watson and moved to Pickens Co. SC. She died around 1815. Her daughter Diana
married Abraham Stewart, their daughter, Nancy married William J. Parsons,
their son James Abraham Parsons is my GGrandfather. I don't know if this is
the same Coats you are looking for. I don't have a lot of information but
you can go to the Wrightsboro, Georgia website and get more.

Fran....did she leave a will in TN or did Burton...a lot of times, children
by a first marriage will be included by the second husband in his will or in
her will...did Mr. Coats leave a will where you think they came from...or
estate papers, sometimes, a second husband was connected with the estate in
some way...
Any old county histories...sometimes they have bios in them, that will give
quite a bit of info on locations, where they came from etc...
With Cherokee research, you might try the rolls to see if she's named on any
of them...
I've found there are no hard and fast rules....anything is possible....:)

Is there anyone on this mailing list who knows of a man named Coats (given
name unknown), who married Alatha Johnston? She was born in SC or east TN
about 1802. It is said her father was a Cherokee chief who lived to be over
100 yrs, but this is unproven. Alatha and Mr. Coats had two children,
Elizabeth and Robert H., who were born in the late 1820s or early 1830s. The
family may have been living in TN, possibly in Hickman or Perry County. Mr.
Coats died when the children were very young.
Alatha Johnston Coats married my ancestor Eleazer BURTON about 1840, and
they had five sons, including two sets of twins. Two of the sons died during
the Civil War. Alatha and Eleazer lived long lives in Decatur Co, TN, where
they are buried.
I would very much like to know something about Alatha's first husband, Mr.
Coats, and their two children. Can anyone help me with this information?
Thank you. Fran in CA franmrlo(a)cwnet.com
