John, Bennett might have been calling you from a private personal
phone...many people object to the caller ID feature...I have a cell phone
and I never answer non ID calls because usually they're wrong
numbers...however, I have several cousins and friends that come through as
non ID calls...so on my Cell phone they just have to leave a message...very
frustrating I might add...big privacy issue here for some people...
Also, I think you need to remember that the U of AZ is a lab conducting
studies etc...so apparently they found something in your DNA test that they
thought perhaps they would like to study further or that they had not seen
before...I've seen this come through on the DNA list...so the lab will run
the test again just to verify what they found the first time...I don't think
it is an indication that the tests are improperly done...rerunning DNA tests
by labs is not at all uncommon, they just want to be sure of their results
before they report them...scientists, you know, we just have to excuse
them...<g>....
Let's also remember, we all have the last surname...how confusing can that
be!!! I was confused trying to set this up for everyone, we had at least 4
or 5 Johns!! some spelled with an *e* some not!!! 5:30 in the evening, I'm
surprised he can remember his name at that time of day!!!
Not to mention they have over 300 surname projects going!!! gotta be trying
on ones memory!!!

Hello List: The purpose of this note is to vent my frustration w/receiving
my DNA results from FTDNA. Last nite on 3/19 Bennett Greenspan of FTDNA in
Houston called my about 5:30PM. Caller ID said Unknown Name. I only answered
it on the second call, as he called right back.We talked for about 30
minutes. As some may know, I was the first to order back in January. I
received TWO test kits in the mail, one for the 12 marker Y test, and one
for the NA test. I dutifully scraped my cheeks and sent these kits back, the
same day, at the post office, before the pick up at 5:00PM. Later, I ordered
a test for Gary Coates of Whitehall, Il., and paid for it, as it appeared he
wasn't able. Later, I visited the site and ordered a 25 marker enhancement
and the Anthropologic Profile which is supposed to give the percentage of
racial ancestry. As I spoke w/Bennett, I could tell he was trying to find me
on the computer, and figure out why I hadn't gotten my original NA test
back, except for the mtDNA test part of it, which is basically useless,
since 47% of white Americans are in the same group. (H).
As we spoke, I became more and more uneasy, as he didn't seem to know what
the problem was, except that the test was being rerun because there was a
"double peak" or some such aberration. I carefully explained to him that I
belonged to the Coats-Coates group, had ordered at least 5 tests, and kept
on spelling my name without the E and mentioning John Henry Coats, and
Johnny D Coates? of Rentin, Wa.? He didn't seem quite on top of it. He said
he spoke w/the lab yesterday and the tech told him he had 8 reruns dumped on
his desk yesterday. That is not my problem. I'm not sending this to alarm
anyone or question the accuracy of the tests already run, I'm just venting
my frustration w/getting my tests back. I don't believe anything intentional
is going on here. I'm just saying that FTDNA and the U of Arizona lab are
not the most efficient organizations I've dealt with. The UNKNOWN NAME thing
on my caller ID bothers me a little also. I'll write again if the smell of a
decomposing rat becomes more pungent. JWCoats.

To make our DNA project really work....
Please, Please, Please, Please, Please consider submitting a DNA sample,
even if you know that one of the samples being tested is your line...
The larger the cross section the better able to sort all these early
families...
Ladies, it's your male Coate, Coates, Coats cousins, uncles and brothers we
need...
I really do think that in time, even the old family genealogies are going to
come into question, so I also encourage you to gather and use original
records to document your lines...
We have an opportunity here to really document the Coate, Coates, Coats
family so let's do it...<g>...(I don't have stock in Nike)
Our great great great grandkids will have a much easier time finding their
family if we do....not to mention, what if you are a grand daughter and the
only male Coate, Coates, Coats was your great great great great grandfather
and her line is now in question and there is no DNA testing for her line...
Please consider it...the costs of the test kits compared to what I know some
of you have paid for books and records is really minimal...
Char
