Hi Lisa,
Maybe one of these days we can arrange a meeting. My husband and I would
certainly enjoy meeting other Coatney's.
Congratulations on your move to McAlester.

It's exciting to see the Coatney list this busy. I don't remember this much
traffic since the late 1990s.
The Coatney list archives goes back to July 2001. You can browse it at

Jackie, I got the "Memoirs" yesterday. I couldn't put it down. Thank you

Brad, there are several clues in the book to the Cherokee link.

I have a copy of this book I bought a year ago in Monett Mo. I was visiting
the area because that is where my great grandfather James Leroy Coatney was
from. I found other Coatney's there that told me of the book and their
lineage was tracable back to James Frances Coatney. They remember hearing
the stories passed down there their family. The local family member was
also called James Coatney. From my perspective, the stories are valid.
They new first hand of their indian heritage too. I don't have any
documentation other than their version of the story and I found the book to
be very credible. There is also another book on Coatney available from
Amazon if you look it up. You can also research some of the work by Don
Coatney, all over the genealogy sites.
Good luck, just my take on the matter.

Hello,
Recently I bought a book for my husband as a Christmas gift, titled "Memoirs
of an Ozark Pioneer and Civil War Soldier" by T. R. Coatney and edited by J.
K. Phillips. The book is about Private James Frances Coatney as a Union
soldier. On the first page of the book there is a clue mentioned about
Margaret Smith stating that (verbatim) -- "Margaret was part of the Smith
family related to Fly Smith, a Cherokee leader who died on the forced
march". - Of course he is speaking about the The Trail of Tears.
After this claim, there is no further mention of him in the book. I have
researched this claim to some degree and cannot find a link. The only Fly
Smith I can find having traveled the Trail of Tears has a statue erected in
his honor along with Chief Whitepath, located at the Trail of Tears
Commemorative Park --Trail of Tears Drive Hopkinsville, Kentucky. I was
also able to locate Flying Smith in the book titled "Those Who Cried the
16000".
I'm not sure of the validity of this claim, however, I hope someone out
there can find the link.

It would be awesome if this pans out. One of my other so-called
"full-blooded" Indian ancestors turned out to have an Irish father and an
English mother with fairly good ancestral proof on both sides. The only way
that ancestor could be full-blooded Cherokee was if she was adopted.
However, nobody seems to want to look in that direction. So many just want
to believe that Irish and English equals full-blooded Indian. Go figure!
Is there a possibility I could find a copy of this book, somewhere?

I had contact at one time a few years back with a Rachel Sue Whitaker, she
said she had books documenting Margaret's cherokee lineage and roll
numbers. However I have not been able to find this evidence myself or been
able to get back in touch with her.
[coatney799.FTW] Per Carroll Co History moved to Lafayette Co, MO from KY
in 1830 and also states Margaret Smith Coatney was half Cherokee.
Dear Brad, we are certainly relatives. I am a descendant of Martha Smith
Coatney, daughter of George Washington Coatney and Margaret Smith. Martha
is my Great Grandmother.
I am forwarding this to our cousin Kathleen Kelley who is in your line.
We have statements in history books that Francis Coatney (brother to
Martha) was at least half Cherokee and that his mother, Margaret Smith was
full blood.
I am Cherokee from both of my family lines.
Oh, all blood members (includes you) of our family belong to
'The Golden Hawk Family of the Cherokee' with Tribal land at Lake Texoma,
Texas.
More on this if you desire the information.
We have rolls, and you would be under M4. (Margaret Smith's line.)
Welcome back to your family.
Respectfully,
Rachel Sue Whitaker Senn

Jackie,
Where did you get the book? James Francis was my great granduncle. I'm
interested in the book.
Thanks,

Hi Cliff,
My husband Mike mentioned that his parents Roy Fay Coatney and his Mom Edith
Grace (Alley) Coatney went to a Bowlin reunion.
I'm not sure how long ago. They both passed away in 2001. As for the book-
After locating it for my husband, I decided to purchase copies for the
museum where I work at in Jay, Oklahoma. I'm thinking its $15.00 but I'm
not 100% sure because I'm writing from home. I'm off for the weekend but if
you like I can check the price and get back to you. I only purchased 4
copies but I'm sure I can get more if needed.
I bought the book because James Frances Coatney is my husband's Great
Grandfather.
This is his line:
Father Roy Fay Coatney
Grandfather James David Coatney
Great Grandfather James Frances Coatney
2nd Great Grandfather George Washington Coatney

My family descended from Nancy Ann Coatney, the sister of James Frances
Coatney.
My family, including my grandmother (which would be the great granddaughter
of Nancy Ann Coatney) live in the Vinita area, about 30 minutes from Jay.

Hello,
Recently I bought a book for my husband as a Christmas gift, titled "Memoirs
of an Ozark Pioneer and Civil War Soldier" by T.

I have not been able to deny nor confirm that Margaret A.S. Coatney was
numerated as Cherokee (what ever blood degree). G.W. Washington was my
husband's 5th great grandfather. When the Cherokee were forced on the Trail
of Tears some of the Indians escaped and were not counted nor listed on any
roll! So, it could be she was one of these. One of George and Margaret's
daughters-in-law was part Cherokee. I'll have to look at my stuff and see
which son married her. Check you later with the info.
